Volumes have been written about President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and British PM Winston Churchill. But what about the women who raised them?

A new book tells the fascinating story of their mothers, Sara Delano Roosevelt and Jennie Churchill. Both natives of Brooklyn, NY, they would go onto take two very different paths and raise their famous sons in completely different ways.

Mosheh speaks with Charlotte Grey, the author of “Passionate Mothers, Powerful Sons,” about the matriarchs and their impact on the two men credited with defeating Hitler and saving democracy. We dive into the moms’ influence, as well as some of the more intriguing anecdotes, including Sara’s obsession with her son and how it impacted his marriage to Eleanor Roosevelt.

    Show notes

We talk to Rana Foroohar, Financial Times Business Columnist and author of the new book, Homecoming, about the evolving role of the US in the world, our broken politics and the transitioning US economy. We begin the conversation with the latest in the Middle East and the Israel-Hamas War.

EP 58: How to Talk To Kids About War: How young is too young? What should parents even say? Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

**Mo News Premium For Members-Only Instagram, Private Podcast: (Click To Join)**

It’s now been more than two weeks since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, killing more than 1,300 people and taking more than 200 hostage. Israel has responded with airstrikes in Gaza that have left thousands dead.

The images are gruesome. The testimony from survivors and victims’ families is heartbreaking. It’s all so hard to process— even for adults a thousand miles away. So how should parents talk to KIDS about what’s happening in the Middle East? Especially in the era of social media.

In this special edition, we’re joined by cognitive psychotherapist Niro Feliciano, the best selling author of “This Book Won’t Make You Happy- 8 Keys to Finding True Contentment.” Niro is also a mother of four.

EP 57: Cure For Brain Cancer? Submersible Ocean Exploration After the Titanic Disaster Sep 29, 2023
    Show notes

We dive deep into the world of submersible exploration in this episode, and discuss what we can learn from traveling to the deepest parts of our oceans. We know more about outer space than our own oceans here on earth. The co-founder of Triton Submarines, Patrick Lahey, is hoping to help change that, and he explains why deep sea travel is so important in this conversation.

We all watched in horror this summer as one submersible ignored safety warnings and imploded near the Titanic in June. We discuss what was uniquely risky about that trip and contraption, and the lessons for the industry and governments from that disaster.

Lahey makes the pitch in this conversation for why deep ocean travel is not only safe but necessary for humans, including some of the things we are discovering about our planet, health and medicine through this type of exploration.

EP 56: The Untold Story of America’s First Women Astronauts Sep 22, 2023
    Show notes

It is a riveting history: How America chose the first six women to go into space and how the first female astronauts overcame adversity and sexism. We talk about all of it in our conversation with space journalist Loren Grush.

Her new book, “The Six: The Untold Story of America’s First Women Astronauts” reads like a movie screenplay, and provides some fascinating historical perspective into the first six American women in space.

As of 1973, the US had sent three females into space: Two spiders and a monkey. We discuss how NASA went about realizing it was time to bring women into space and what challenges the women faced when they got there. Tune in for the history and the ridiculous story involving NASA engineers and tampons.

EP 54: How Conspiracy Theories and Secret Society Fears Have Shaped American History Sep 07, 2023
    Show notes

From the Salem Witch Trials to Qanon, it turns out that conspiracy theories are “as American as apple pie.” We dive into why we believe them, and how they have impacted American history and democracy in a conversation with author and cultural historian Colin Dickey.

His latest book, “Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shape American Democracy,” provides some fascinating historical perspective into how fears of immigrants, other religions, and secret societies have impacted the country’s history over the last few centuries.

Mark Twain once said that “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” and we learn that from this unique look at the American story.

EP 53: “Americans Want Chaos:” What The U.S. Gets Wrong In The Middle East Aug 30, 2023
    Show notes

After 20 years of war and revolution across the Middle East and North Africa–from Libya to Afghanistan--we take a look at what US foreign policy gets wrong, where China is trying to fill the gaps, and the future of the region, in this conversation with author and journalist Robert Kaplan.

His latest book, “The Loom of Time,” provides some incredible historical perspective on US foreign policy and takes us on a tour of the region from Saudi Arabia to Israel to Syria to Egypt. This episode is effectively an hour-long masters degree in Middle East affairs.

While the US might try, the region continues to require constant attention from Washington DC. Why is that? Kaplan provides perspective on how we got here over the last 100 years, about his conversations with senior leaders across the region and what might happen next.
