I discovered that in this phase of business growth, small golden nuggets of insight, like adjusting your tone or setting sales limits, have a substantial impact. For those making around $2,000 to $3,000 per client, feeling the need for more growth, the frustration lies in discovering those crucial, tiny tweaks that make all the difference. It's these small adjustments that significantly propel businesses forward.

And everything points back to presentation and customer experience. People get skeeved out by the word "sales" and it's time we normalize it and remove the sleazy car salesman stigma from it. Personally, I love to be sold to. The idea of browsing clothes rack after clothes rack makes me sick to my stomach. But let me walk into a store where the associates cater to their customers and make suggestions on things I should buy? Sign me up!
The same is true for our portrait clients. They become easily overwhelmed by which portraits to choose, and which artwork to choose. And this is where we come in, without suggestions on what size and piece will look best where.

I am so excited to welcome Charlotte Detienne to the show today! Charlotte helps business owners write clear, compelling website copy that converts visitors into paying clients.
Your website is your digital handshake, and likely your potential client's first impression of you. As photographers, I think we tend to forget about words - and not just any words but clear and concise words that serve a purpose.
To convert visitors into paying clients, your website needs the following 3 things.

Clear Messaging - Ooey goey emotional words. This should come from your why and help your potential clients to connect with you on a deeper level.
A strong call to action - There should be zero doubt about what the next step is in hiring you.
Make it about your clients - not you. - Allow your potential client to visualize what it will be like to work with you. What problem(s) will you solve for them? Make them the hero of your website's story.

26. Are You Really Serving Your Clients? Mar 13, 2023

Are you truly serving your clients, or are you just taking their photos?
When creating your customer experience, it is important to keep that question in mind. Do your clients see you as someone who shows up and pushes a button? Or do they see you as more?
Not only should they view you as an expert in photography, but also as an interior designer, stylist, artist, and lastly a photographer.
Before we even chose a location and outfit, we need to see the space where our clients are going to be displaying their wall art. The space will influence the way you direct them in choosing an outfit, deciding on a location, and how you pose them. At their photo reveal it will help you to coach them on choosing the correct size and material for their prints/frames.
One of the largest pain points for portrait clients is choosing their outfits. As their photographer, it is our job to help them look their absolute best when it comes to clothing, hair, and makeup. We want our clients to feel amazing in their photos!

25. Are You Showing Up In Your Business Part 3 Mar 06, 2023

Are you treating your business like a business? Or like a hobby?
How you conduct and present your business to others will be directly reflected in how your clients treat you.
If you want to be taken seriously by others, you must take yourself seriously. Present yourself as an expert and business owner. Set boundaries through working hours, communication, and policies. When you communicate in a professional manner, during reasonable hours, your clients will be more likely to respect your time.
The way that you word your communication with clients can make all the difference in their level of respect for you and your time.
As a business owner, you also need to keep close tabs on your finances. Do you know where all of your money is going? Do you have monthly, quarterly, or yearly goals set? Why not?
In order for our clients to take us seriously, we must first take our business seriously from the inside out. We have to talk about our business like it is a legitimate business and like we are a big deal - even if we don’t feel like it yet.

Do not shortchange yourself because you are just starting out.
Dream up your ideal life situation, how much money will you need to make to reach that place? Once you have that number, you are able to determine what your session fee needs to be.

Now I'm not talking about packing a notebook and wearing comfortable shoes. I want to focus more on ways that you can prepare yourself for all of the information that you are about to consume.
Here are 4 key things that you should keep in mind when attending a conference:

Don't reinvent your business with every speaker that you listen to
Don't ever do something just because someone else does it
Take the time to learn the reason behind every change you make in your business.
Learn to audit your business and continually check in on where your business is so that you can make adjustments and pivots throughout the year.

Think about this for a second - Where does your pricing fall when compared to other portrait photographers? When was the last time you increased your pricing? Ok, now answer me this, why?
Human nature leads us to associate price with value and quality. By building your brand and business and presenting yourself as elite, your potential clients will save their pennies to work with you. Why? Because you have presented yourself in a way that says "I am the best at what I do". They will treat you with respect.
In turn, you will give them an unrivaled experience, providing feedback on their styling and home decor (when they choose their artwork).

14. Myths About In Person Sales for Photographers Dec 19, 2022

Does the thought of in person sales (IPS) send you into a panic? Is your knee jerk reaction "I won't do that, I'm not a sleazy salesperson"? If so, I'm so glad that you're here!
In this episode, I'm going to break down the common myths about IPS. I promise you, there are no sleazy salespeople, pressuring clients, or trickery happening over here!
IPS, done right, means that you can have clients spending $5-6k on average with you on albums and wall art, while still having options for those with smaller budgets. Your clients will love the fact that you're helping them to sort through all of their portraits, deciding which ones to print. They'll be in awe of the final product because you helped them choose the right finishes and the properly sized artwork for their walls. Your clients won't be blindsided because you will prepare them properly for the investment by being clear and transparent with them from the first point of contact.
Proper preparation and systems make IPS an amazing experience for both you as a photographer and your clients.

13. 9 Things You Need to Do To Plan Your Year Dec 14, 2022

Are you running your business by the seat of your pants, or are you planning out every last detail? One of my favorite topics to dive into is planning for the new year. In today's episode, we'll go over the 9 things that you need to do when planning for the new year. These tasks will help you to bring intention to your business while continuing to grow your business with clear methods to make sure that you're staying on track.
The 9 Things You Need to do to Plan Your Year are:

Set Clear Goals - ‌This means we should set specific & challenging goals, write down our goals, visit our goals daily, share our goals in a community, and imagine & visualize our goals.
Plan From a Higher Place - Stop thinking small and dream BIG! Plan your life from the perspective of the you that you will be when you've "made it".
Know your Financial Goals - Determine how much you need to make from each client in order to meet your financial goals. Understanding business finances so that you can accurately plan for reaching those big financial goals.
Perform a Client Audit - Identify where your past year falls in relation to your goals. Take a look at your average client investment, what they purchased, and how big of art did they purchase, determine ways that you can increase that client investment by making tweaks in your system.
Perform a Financial Audit - Know where your money is going!
Create a Budget for the New Year - Plan for large purchases and all of the potential spending that you will do in the next year.
Mark Off your Calendar - Planning our your entire calendar allows you to set boundaries on your time and gives you a sense of stability throughout the year. Plan for your time off, what days do you want to hold client meetings, which days will you shoot portraits?
Time Block your Weeks - Determine what hours you want to work. Setting boundaries on your day-to-day schedule is just as important as your yearly schedule. It will allow you to keep a consistent schedule that you and your family can count on.
Create a Marketing Strategy with Intention - Create a marketing plan that gives you a clear and concise plan so that you know what to focus on. Market to your ideal client and know how you're going to get them through your door.

11. Why I Ditched My Price List Nov 28, 2022

At a recent summit that I spoke at - I made one of the most controversial statements that had the chat exploding with comments.
I told them that I ditched my price list.
I decided to ditch my price list years ago. I realized that by having a price list I was letting my clients simply order off a menu like they were at McDonald's when instead I wanted to run my business like a 5-star restaurant.
Giving our clients a pricing menu- is like asking them to read a different language. No matter how beautiful or perfectly crafted, our clients don’t truly understand what it means.
I made the decision to get to know my clients. Determine what their needs are, educate them, and then provide them with exactly what they truly want.

To find your why start to look at the three most impactful memories in your life, and journal about those three memories. See what themes come up and what really resonates with you from those stories.

5. What Should my Portrait Session Fee Be? Oct 17, 2022

The number one question I see photographers asking is “What should my session fee be?”
Join us as we walk through the exact process we use to help our coaching clients figure out what they should be charging their clients.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to this one single question.
How much money do you need to make to meet your income goals?
But really, it starts with- how much money to do you want to make in your pocket each and every year from your business.
Don’t think small, think big. Set your goals where you want them to be 5 or even 10 years down the road - not the safe number where you think they will realistically be.
From there, you can figure out exactly how much you need to bring in each and every year in your business, and work backward to figure out how much money you need to make from every client.
After you know that number, you get to decide how you will get your clients there. You get to choose which pricing method works best for you.
Will you charge a high session fee upfront that includes everything?
Maybe a mid-range session fee that includes a print credit?
Or a low session fee that doesn’t include anything?
Ultimately, it is up to you - but what matters at the end of the day is that you meet your target income for each client that walks through your door.

Mindset is the number one thing that I see impacting my coaching client’s ability to go out and do the big scary things they need to do in order to build a profitable photography business.
Do you ever feel those weird feelings, like something is physically holding you back and stopping you from doing what you need to do?
Maybe the thought of people paying you thousands of dollars freaks you out so you never go out and charge what you should be charging. Or potentially you are worried that you might disappoint someone if everything isn’t perfect, so you work and re-work things over and over and never put them out into the world.
In all reality, your life experiences mold your mindset without you even realizing it, creating limiting beliefs that you may not even be aware of. Identifying and analyzing these limiting beliefs, determining the lies versus the truth, will open doors you didn’t even realize were shut.
