College Planning Mistake #1:

Starting with "Where do you want to go to College"? College is part of the journey, not the end goal. You can get really stuck in a place that will not get you to the career you were born to do.

College Planning Mistake #2:

A huge (expensive) mistake that a lot of people make is taking one line item out of their long list of interests, sliding into a major, and NOT understanding what that degree means to job searching later.

College Planning Mistake #3:

Asking, "What do I want to be when I grow up?" Careers are constantly changing. In order to understand what you want to be, you need to understand what all the choices are!

Creating a Movement with Ben Levey Mar 23, 2021

This one is pure inspiration. Benjamin Levey is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Final Third Foundation (F3). He has over 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sports and development industry. In 2011, his passion for helping through sport developed when he founded the Likoni Community Football League (LCFL), based in Mombasa Kenya. Executive Functioning, Metacognition, and Anxiety with Julieann Ash Mar 15, 2021

Julieann Ash is a Board Certified Educational Therapist. She received her Master of Science degree from St. Cloud State University, mainly focusing on the areas of learning disabilities, behavioral/emotional disorders, and mild to moderate cognitive impairment; with a specialization in autism.

An educator with more than 45 years of experience in middle school, high school, special education, and educational therapy; Julieann’s primary focus is on helping individuals remove learning roadblocks and achieve their personal goals for success.

Julieann provides one-on-one intensive instruction with individual clients to help them build a tool box of personal strategies for success. She also consults with other key individuals in the client's life such as parents, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and teachers. Julieann provides training for parents to help them to successfully advocate for their children as well as helping students develop personal responsibility and self-advocacy skills. Once she helps her clients to identify their learning style, personal learning or social roadblocks; she assists them and their key support people in successfully addressing the social, emotional and neuro-biological factors that challenge them.

From elementary students to professionals, Julieann helps people of all ages function better in their environment. She provides clarification for why a person is having difficulty in the learning process and help with developing strategies or supports that enhance the individual's productivity and learning capabilities.

Life after the IEP: How to Increase Quality of Life and Independence from Preschool to Graduation with Eliseo Jimenez Feb 22, 2021

Eliseo Jimenez is an assistant professor in intellectual disabilities in the Department of Learning Sciences at Georgia State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Western Michigan University in 2004, a master’s degree in special education with a specialization in autism and developmental disabilities from the University of Texas as Austin in 2006 and a doctoral degree in special education from The Ohio State University in 2014. He is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral (BCBA-D).

His research interests include teaching daily living skills to students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, teaching employment skills to students with intellectual disabilities, video prompting, technology, preference assessments and teacher preparation.

Dr. Bennett and Dr. Jiminez discuss independence, the use of technology to increase vocational skills, emphasizing independence starting in early childhood, and how teachers can best equip their students for post-secondary life.

Beautiful Language, Beautiful Life with Peg Hollenback Feb 08, 2021

Peg Hollenback is a Reading Practitioner and owner of PegEd. She has been practicing since 2005 with a commitment to providing the explanations, not exceptions of the English Language. Upon reflecting over the past 15+ years, Peg said, “I have been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with many brilliant students that have made me a better teacher.” Dr. Bennett often refers to Peg as HER teacher and she is someone who has greatly influenced Dr. Bennett's own scholarship and the scholarship she shares with her students.

Dr. Bennett and Peg speak about how far they have come in the understanding of language throughout their careers, and how rewarding it is to experience their students benefit from whole language learning.

Connecting through Play with Maria Demosthenous Feb 01, 2021

Maria Demosthenous, or “Dr. D” as she is known, is a Board Certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist. Essentially, she is a doctor for thoughts and feelings. She uses play, talking, and mindfulness to help children work through challenges. In this episode we talk about the importance of play. Our conversation was interrupted by my own children and they joined in on the conversation with Dr. D! In this episode, Dr. D. gives parents concrete steps in how to mindfully play with their children as a way to connect with them. Best of all, her advice is not new, is evidenced-based, and is free. Our conversation has already shifted my thinking and shaped my own practices as a mother. I know it will help you, too.

Empathy in Education with Morris Council Jan 11, 2021

Morris Council, III, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of West Georgia in the Department of Literacy and Special Education. He received his BS in education and MEd in curriculum and teacher leadership; both from Miami University. He earned his PhD in special education and applied behavior analysis from The Ohio StateUniversity. His research, teaching, and service are conducted through a paradigm of equity and access. His research agenda includes two foci: (1) instructional interventions for improving academic outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners; and (2) student-athlete academic achievement. Morris shares with us his three tenets of education and how to maintain empathy during these unprecedented times.

When you are starting your 30th year of teaching, what are your professional development goals? How do you keep students engaged? How do you keep learning as the teacher and continue to hone your craft? Diana Pryor is one of the most joyful teachers I have had the privilege to work with. You would never guess she has been at it over 30 years. She is energetic, passionate, engaged, and constantly growing her practice. She is the kind of teacher you want your kids to be in class with, and the kind of colleague you want to have on your team. My only regret with this podcast recording is that you can’t see the twinkle in her eye when she talks about her students and her service to her school community. Looking for some inspiration on the pending school year? Listen to Episode 1 with Dr. Jim Mahoney. He is one of the best story tellers I know. He interviewed teachers from across 7 states and shares with us 5 things that worked really well this spring during emergency remote learning. He also offers 5 Principles of a GREAT teacher that he summarized from letters from his students 47 years ago. These 5 Principles are still relevant in our practice today. If you can bear with a few tech glitches I had for this first episode, you will definitely want to grab a notebook and pen and listen to what Jim has to say!
