“If you don’t know how to lose, if you don’t know what to take from the loss, it’s hard to get better.” Learning how to take positives from your losses is crucial to life on tour as a tennis player. After all, even some of the very best players in the world like 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini frequently taste defeat. In this episode of Mind Set Win Matteo explains how he’s developed the mental strength to negotiate moments of disappointment and how taking learnings from defeats is a stepping stone to future success. Host Kate Courtney introduces us to the attribution theory before providing us with an exercise to help us uncover why things didn’t go our way in our daily life.Based around reflecting on a time when we were unsuccessful in something, the exercise offers us action points to adopt moving forwards so we can build a plan for when future opportunities arise. Recap the exercise below:Firstly, think of an occasion where things didn’t go as you hoped. Then, list all the things that actually went well despite the negative outcome. Now, list all the things that didn’t go well, but were IN your control.Next, list all the things that didn’t go well, but were OUT of your control.Once you’ve made your lists, think about which category was hardest or easiest to find items for.Lastly, look back at the things that didn’t go very well, but were within your control; these are the things you can work on, and this is how you can improve.Chapters:00:00-Mattero Berrettini09:24-Theme14:32-ExerciseFor more, check out www.redbull.com/mindsetwinGet in touch with us @katecourtney, @matberrettini
