Tracy Mitrano (D) Cybersecurity & Internet Policy Expert for NY-23 May 11, 2018
    Show notes

Cyber security is one the most important issues facing the future of country. Mark Zuckerberg recently finished testifying to Congress. The Senate is voting next week on net neutrality. And even Pamela Anderson has entered the fray, trying to use her celebrity to free Julian Assange. (Seriously.) Yet, listening to questions at the Zuckerberg hearing, the dearth of technological knowledge within the halls of Congress is apparent. Thankfully, Tracy Mitrano, Democratic candidate from New York's 23rd district, is ready to bring her Internet policy skills to our nation's capital. Tracy has spent her time teaching college classes across the country, building her own cyber security consulting firm, and creating a degree program for the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Tracy came on the podcast to talk about the Russian investigation, net neutrality, and the desperate need for more technological savvy members of Congress.

Patrisse Cullors & Cat Brooks Launch Justice Teams Network May 02, 2018
    Show notes

In California, police consistently shoot over 100 people every year. Last year in the United States, nearly 1,200 people were killed by police officers. These deaths destroy families and rip apart communities while law enforcement responsible for even the most egregious cases are rarely, if ever, held accountable. The Network is a statewide coalition of rapid response organizations across the state of California that will mobilize communities to respond radically to state violence. The Network will focus heavily on legislation as well as a public information campaign around the Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights, the single largest obstacle to police accountability. Cat Brooks, Co-Founder of JTN, joined us on the Podcast to discuss the launch of this new initiative.

Steven Kirkland: Texas' First Gay Supreme Court Justice? Apr 26, 2018
    Show notes

While judicial elections are rarely well-publicized, the impact of who sits on our judiciary has gotten more attention under the Trump administration, with judges striking down the Muslim bans, the transgender military ban, and DACA repeal. Even State Supreme Courts have received some coverage in the wake of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's takedown of state GOP's unconstitutional gerrymandering. This year, 32 states are holding state Supreme Court elections, with a total of 74 seats up for election. If the blue wave sweeps judicial offices as well as Congress in November, the ideological composition of our state judiciaries could shift left for decades. Steven Kirkland joined us on the podcast to discuss the right's takeover of the judiciary, the difficulty of running for public office as a former alcoholic, and why he believes civil rights are protected by the Texas Constitution.

Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson: PA's First Black Woman in Congress? Apr 19, 2018
    Show notes

Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson is a former White House advisor and senior U.S. Senate aide running for Congress in PA-10. If elected, she will become the first-ever Black woman to serve in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation.

Can Dee Dawkins-Haigler Protect Voting Rights in Georgia? Apr 16, 2018
    Show notes

The ACLU likened voter suppression in modern-day Georgia to Jim Crow-era suppression tactics. Dee Dawkins-Haigler is hoping to change that as Secretary of State.

Kerri Evelyn Harris, Civil Rights Activist for Delaware Senate Apr 12, 2018
    Show notes

Tom Carper has been in elected office since 1977. The last election in which he faced a primary challenger, he cruised to victory with 87.8% of the vote. A Bill Clinton-style moderate, Carper's corporate centrism is perfectly embodied by his recent vote for a bank regulation bill that enables racial discrimination and hurts homebuyers. Yet for four decades, progressives have been unable to hold him accountable for prioritizing the rich and powerful over the real Americans he's supposed to be representing. Kerri Evelyn Harris wants to change that. A 38-year-old biracial lesbian civil rights activist and veteran, Kerri is mounting a primary challenge to Carper from the left. Running on a progressive platform that prioritizes single-payer healthcare, economic justice, and civil rights. As co-founder of the Delaware Civil Rights Coalition, a member of the Delaware Human Relations Commission, and Air Force veteran, Kerri's record is a far cry from Carper's career politicking. Additionally, if elected, Kerri would be the first openly queer woman of color ever to serve in Congress. Kerri joined us on the podcast to discuss her insurgent candidacy, her intersectional justice platform, and her perspective on imperialist American foreign policy as a veteran.

Suraj Patel: Attorney, Business Ethics Professor & Obama Alum for NY-12 Apr 09, 2018
    Show notes

It may not come as much of a surprise that New York’s 12th district, which includes much of Manhattan and Queens, is considered a solidly Democratic district. In 2016, it went to Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by a whopping 69.8 points. A Republican has not won election to Congress in the district since 1958, with none having even broken 20% of the vote since Democrat Shirley Chisholm's victory in 1968. So instead of worrying about whether the 12th will go red, spectators are always focused on the Democratic primary, which could indicate how far left the party is going. And Suraj Patel is ready to be the party's leftward pull in NY-12. Suraj is a lawyer, activist, educator, and first-generation American who worked for Barack Obama since his 2008 presidential campaign. When Donald Trump was inaugurated, Suraj got quick to work joining the resistance, even volunteering to protect immigrants facing deportation and travelers stuck at JFK due to the Muslim ban. Suraj Patel joined us on the podcast to talk about the #AbolishICE movement, how to turn out voters in a district that only has 8% Democratic primary turnout, the difficulty of challenging an established incumbent in the New York political machine and more! This podcast is sponsored by: Parkway Politics. Since 2016, so many of us have become very active in politics. However, we tend to forget what our state and local governments are doing because of the chaos in D.C. and this is why Ron, Jay and Brian, the hosts of Parkway Politics, have created a podcast to discuss the important local issues. If you are up for a great discussion about New Jersey politics and issues, then subscribe to the Parkway Politics Podcast. It’s important to voice the state and local issues to make sure they are not going unchecked. There are plenty of great podcasts out there that talk about national issues, but Parkway Politics is focused solely on delivering what is happening in New Jersey. Follow them on Twitter @ParkwayPolitics and, of course, subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts.

If elected, he would become the first openly gay Attorney General in U.S. history and the youngest Attorney General in the country. Matt joined us on the podcast to discuss growing up as a gay kid in a small town, enforcing gun safety through the Office of Attorney General, and holding the pharmaceutical industry accountable for the opioid crisis and price gouging.
