These units specialise in infiltration and reconnaissance using whatever means required for lookout tasks, observation and attack, as well as having the capacity to extract civilians or military personnel in conflict zones. Trident Juncture is a result of interoperability so these demonstrations or DVD, is also a big challenge, once we are trying to develop interoperability between all the nations participating in this event.’ 00:02:59:16 ‘The main difficulty is co-ordination because, it’s not the weather because you are used to do or to perform this kind of operation in this kind of weather, it’s not the sea state, it’s more the co-ordinations between all the countries involved.’ 00:03:17:16 ‘So we will start with SOF, Special Operations Forces insertion on the beach. We will have some pre-landing forces arriving on the beach, so after that in order to shape the objective area and after that we will have the landing forces landing on the beach with different landing crafts. And the last phase is for logistic purposes so we will have sustainable to put goods and weapons and ammunitions ashore in order to provide good conditions for landing force working on the objective area.’ 00:03:56:16 ‘The world is changing so nowadays the big threat is more asymmetric than conventional so we need to be prepared to do or react against these threats. The security on the beach is very very important in order to put boots on the ground and after that conduct all the operations in order to give more safe and secure environment to this objective area.’

Plight of the Shearwater Apr 05, 2023
    Show notes

Currently the Newell Shearwater is one of four endangered seabirds on Kauai. Nesting in the most remote mountains and ridges of Kauai, Newell’s Shearwaters are pelagic sea birds, spending most of their lives at sea, flying over land only during total darkness. Similarly, armed with only their inborn navigational skills, young fledglings will fly out to sea for the first time ever in total darkness, using the stars and moon to find their way to the sea. Unfortunately, human development, with all of its artificial lighting, has caused these young fledgling birds to be confused as they fly out to sea for their first time. As a result, Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands (PMRF), has become increasingly involved in conservation efforts to assist in preserving the Newell Shearwater population. These efforts include a “Dark Skies Program,” in which all non-mission critical lights are turned off, or shielded, during the time of the year young fledglings take to the sea. PMRF has also implemented another new strategy this year to complement the dark skies program — radar ornithology. PMRF uses the radar at night to determine the flight passage of Newell’s Shearwaters overhead through radar. By using these specialized radars, researchers are able to determine not only the number of birds flying overhead, but also the direction they are going. Scientists conclude without intervention, their populations are sure to continue to decrease.
