This week’s recommendation is the work of Doctor José Juan Olvera. He’s from Monterrey and he’s researched the city’s vallenato culture in depth for years. Check the show notes for a link to an article of his, that also includes a pretty great playlist.

Mija Música: La danza Oct 05, 2022

Show notes

In this episode, Gavilán shares the very particular style in which Colombian cumbia is danced in Monterrey. He also speaks to his abuela Yoya, who tells him how she met abuelo Lolo, back when he was an adventurous young man.

This week’s recommendation is the song “El baile del gavilán”, by Chicos de Barrio. This band isn’t from Monterrey, but from the nearby city of Torreón. But this song is a sort of manifesto for the dancing style mentioned in this episode.
