    Metal Matters

Metal Matters, a Gimme Radio podcast, is a weekly discussion hosted by Fred Pessaro (Revolver, Vice, Decibel, etc) and Michael Berdan (Uniform, ex-Drunkdriver), who took over from former host Mike Hill of Season of Mist recording artist Tombs in early 2021. If you love metal and extreme music, tune in every week for discussions about all things new, some things classic, but all things heavy.

    97: Where Does a Body End? Nov 03, 2020
    Show notes

If you guys listened to the episode with Barney Greenway, you probably picked up on the fact that we both think the Swans are a crucial band in the development of extreme music. Randy and I dig into some of our reflections on the band and give an overview of the history and various changes in sound that they went through. We've also added some of our favorite tracks to illustrate how the Swans changed over the years.

    Intro: "Cop"

    Outro: "Eden Prison"

    Interludes:

    "I Crawled"

    "God Damn the Sun"

96: Halloween Episode with Terence Hannum (Locrian) Oct 27, 2020
    Show notes

Like many of you, Halloween is my favorite time of the year. To celebrate the spookiest time of the year, I've invited Terence Hannum of Locrian to run us through some of his favorite horror movie films scores. For anyone who is familiar with Locrian's cinematic approach to extreme music, they won't be surprised to learn that he is a bit an aficionado when it comes to movie scores and soundtracks. We had a blast talking about horror movies, their scores and why we dig them.

    Intro:"Eternal Return" - Locrian

    Rundown of Film Score Selections:

    1. "Mandy Love Theme" - Mandy - Johan Johannson
    2. "Andrew Void" - Under the Skin - Mica Levi
    3. "Mantra 1" - Nosferatu - Popol Vuh
    4. "Darkbeats" - Inside - Francois-Eudes Chanfrault
    5. "Burial Ground" - Burial Ground - Berto Pisano / Elsio Mancuso
    6. "Voci Dal Nulla" - The Beyond - Fabio Frizzi

    94: London May Returns! Oct 13, 2020
    Show notes

Halloween is around the corner so these next few episodes are going to lean heavily into the season. With that said, London May (Samhain, Misfits, Star of Brutal Realty) joins us to update us on some killer news regarding Brutal Realty, a horror-comedy film that he stars in about a black metal drummer in league with Satan, that is trying his hand at realty. Good stuff!

    Intro:"Halloween II"

    Outro:"Mother of Mercy"

93: Deep Cuts with Ralph Schmidt of Ultha Oct 06, 2020
    Show notes

I've always relied on old friend Ralph to turn me on to the best music, regardless of genre, so it made sense to invite him on for once of these. Though it seems like yesterday, Ralph and I met nearly two decades ago when I was on tour in Europe. We sent hours, listening to music and talking about horror movies. Not only do I value his diverse musical expertise, Ralph is in my inner circle of friends. Enjoy the episode!

92: Barney Greenway of Napalm Death Sep 29, 2020
    Show notes

Napalm Death was the first extreme metal band that I ever got into. Sure, I was into Slayer and Metallica and thrash but Napalm Death were among the first crop of bands that I heard that really pushed the genre into a new dimension. It’s an honor Barney Greenway on the show this week to talk about “Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism” and the general stat of this crazy moment in time we’re living in.

Intro: “The Curse of Being in Thrall”

Outro: “Joie De Ne Pas Vivre”

91: Heavy Tales with Jon Zazula Sep 21, 2020

If you love thrash and all of the classic bands from back in the day, most likely Jon Zazula was somehow involved in there career at some point. Megaforce Records, Old Bridge Metal Militia, Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven, Metallica…if any of these things mean anything to you, then check out this episode and THEN check out Jon’s book “Heavy Tales: The Metal, The Music, The Madness”

Intro: “Hit the Lights” – Metallica

    89: Deep Cuts w J Bennet Sep 08, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the first episode of Deep Cuts. You guys seem to be into the obscure, odd bands that we talk about from time to time so we’re going to be doing these types of episodes from time to time. This week, we have J Bennet back on to talk about some of his go-to listens from artists that you may or may not have heard before.

    Into: “Black Car” – Acid

Outro: “Turn in the Dark” – Dax Riggs

88: Classic Records Circus of Power Vices Sep 01, 2020
    Show notes

Me and Randy are back this week with another classic records episode. This one is for the New York / New Jersey peeps in particular. Circus or Power released their seminal record Vices back in 1990. It stands apart with its stories of down-and-out loners, journeys through the seedy underbelly of New York City, punk-infused blues riffs and a lyrical darkness calls to mind the best of Leadbelly, Howlin’ Wolf and Roy Orbison.

    Intro: “Vices”

    Outro: “In the Wind”
