Changing The Label With Alvin Law Dec 20, 2019

Like you, attitude expert and bestselling author Alvin Law has heard a lot of clichés about cultivating a positive attitude. But are any of them true? Does a positive attitude really guarantee success in life? Should we force ourselves to think positively, no matter what our situation? Will mantras and sound bites change how we view ourselves and the world? Or are we thinking about attitude all wrong?

With over three decades of professional speaking and over five (ahem) decades of experience living life without arms, his view is radically different.

Alvin’s mission is to spark a worldwide Attitude Revolution. Attitude Revolutions happen because people are inspired, from within themselves, to practice cultivating a more proactive and effective outlook on their lives. Alvin knows, and demonstrates to his audiences, that attitude is not about touchy-feely platitudes or ‘thinking positive’ - attitude is how we look at and interpret life overall. It is a skill that can be learned, and that must be practiced. It is a tool that can be used. Most importantly, it can’t be imposed upon people - it has to come from a genuine place.

Alvin uses his story to challenge audiences to rewrite the negative stories they tell themselves about themselves; to stop feeling like victims in their lives and get proactive; to stop making excuses and start making choices. His fusion of storytelling, musical performance and down-to-earth humour connect with his audiences at an intimate, intense and individual level. Over 7,500 organizations on five continents, including Cisco Systems, Pfizer and Telus, have used Alvin to ignite, engage and transform their people.

Born with no arms as a result of the drug Thalidomide, Alvin was adopted by a family who taught him to use his feet for hands - and who by doing so gave him the gift of freedom. In addition to being a professional speaker, he is a trained broadcaster, fundraiser, award-winning musician and bestselling author. He has earned the designation of Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), an honour possessed by less than ten percent of professional speakers worldwide. In 2009, Alvin was inducted into the Canadian Association of Speakers (CAPS) Hall of Fame.

Prior to his career as a professional speaker, Alvin worked for non-profit groups, in advertising and public relations, the civil service, and has even run for public office (unsuccessfully, but he got over it). He has appeared on countless telethons and media features, and has been the subject of two award-winning television documentaries. He has played a direct role in raising over $175,000,000 for charity.

Drums and A Maverick Dream with Holly Madge Jul 04, 2019

Today you will meet Holly Madge. Maverick Creative Magical Being, if you ask me.

Holly set up her first drum set at age 10 in a barn in Devon and it's where the love affair began.

With the help of supportive parents, extraordinary teachers, deaf neighbors and a habit of saying yes to every new challenge, she picked up her first class honors degree in music at Southampton University and headed to London where she cut her teeth at the forefront of the popular music scene.

Holly is not your average professional drummer. She is just as at home deep in a sweaty progressive house set in Ibiza performing with Idris Elba as she is delivering the iconic percussion lines of Hans Zimmer’s film scores in the world’s arenas. Variety keeps Holly’s inquisitive mind fresh and her style eclectic, from creating a duet with a contortionist at the Singapore Grand Prix to performing live drum and bass at Glastonbury with The Telegraph’s top ten festival highlights The Correspondents or performing with two contemporary dancers for Nike’s new product range.

Holly has recently ventured into session work, recording those iconic opening-sequence bongos in Lorne Balfe Mission Impossible - Fallout, percussion for Hans Zimmer’s The Lion King sound track, drums for folk rock singer Frank Turner’s album “No Man’s Land” and new practice material for the UK’s most prestigious exam board ABRSM. She travelled to Kenya in 2018 with the British Council & East Africa Arts to perform with Kenyan and Ugandan musicians at the Nairobi Jazz festival and took a solo trip to Cuba to deepen her understanding of the country’s treasured percussive heritage.

Today you will meet Theo Fleury.

NHL STANLEY CUP CHAMPION – OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST – WORLD CUP JUNIOR CHAMPION – EXPERT IN THE FIELD OF RELATIONAL TRAUMA.

Theo Fleury is perhaps best known for his time on the ice. But off the rink, his life once carried the markings of a troubled childhood, abuse and coping with emotional pain through addictive and self-destructive behaviours.

Today, Theo defines himself as a victor over trauma and addiction, and a facilitator to those still trying to find their way. His best-selling books, Playing with Fire and Conversations with a Rattlesnake, encourage open sharing and provide practical tools that people seeking help can personally use. These tools are also useful to those who want to lead a productive conversation, called “Real Conversations”, with anybody else experiencing trauma.

Theo has been awarded the Canadian Humanitarian Award and the Queen’s Jubilee Medallion. He is a Siksika Nation Honorary Chief and recipient of the Aboriginal Inspire Award. He also holds two honorary doctorates – one in Science from the University of Guelph-Humber for outstanding contributions to the mental health of Canadians, and another in Laws from Brandon University for his work in combating child abuse and promoting healing and recovery.

Today, Theo is a healthy, motivational and successful agent of change. He is committed to daily transformation through personal growth, mindfulness and new action, and his compassionate spirit allows others to feel safe and whole by experiencing his vulnerability.

Theo is skillfully adept at inviting audience self-reflection during his many speaking events by creating safe environments for guests to share their own “Me Too” experiences. Without controversy or blame, Theo focuses on helping and leading others down a path of healing.

Love & Educate The Old School Way with Akbar Cook Mar 13, 2019

Today’s guests helps inner city kids change their view of possibility...and he started with Friday night hang outs and clean clothes.

Akbar and I spoke about:

How to educate with love and create relationships to move forward in life
What change is possible even for kids who have never even known safety and security through vision and action
Labels mean nothing- the sky is the limit when you have the right support

Principal at West Side High School in Newark, NJ, Akbar Cook has worked to increase attendance and end violence within his community. He realized that students were missing school roughly 3 times a week because they were being made fun of for not having clean clothes. In response, he transformed the school’s locker room into a laundromat for students to clean their clothes for free, and attendance has increased. Additionally, due to violence in their community and the desire to keep his students or his “babies” as he likes to call them out of trouble, Akbar Cook created an after-school program that works to keep students off the street, encourage studying, and overall gives them a place free of violence.

Becoming the FIRST NFL player to climb the Seven Summits, Mark played in the NFL for the Raiders, Rams and Saints and is a vested member of the NFL Players Association.

He is the Co-Founder of Venture Backed Front Porch Classics, a Seattle gaming

company which was seen in over 700 retail locations and 7 countries with an exit and is now

now the CEO of the FindingYourSummit.com and host of his own podcast with the same name.

Mark is a member of Super Bowl Champion Chris Long’s Waterboys.org team to raise money and awareness by building water wells for the people in Tanzania.
