Ian Urbina - The Outlaw Ocean Aug 31, 2020
    Show notes

Piracy. Gunrunning. Human trafficking. The harvest of endangered animals. Vigilantes pursuing justice. All happening in a world most of us know nothing about: the open ocean. This week, I sat down with Ian Urbina for an episode unique in the ManTalks canon. It’s my belief that cultivating or embodying the healthy masculine (or feminine) has to involve both inner and outer work, and a big part of outer work is being aware of what’s happening in--or happening to--the world. Ian’s expertise, passion, and concern for this darker corner of human life was readily apparent to me. It was an honor to talk to him.

Ian Urbina, a former investigative reporter for the New York Times, is the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, a non-profit journalism organization based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on reporting about environmental and human rights crimes at sea.

Listen in to hear about what it was like to chase one of INTERPOL’s most wanted ships, how “labor brokers” kidnap men (and boys) to work on ships, and how shame and pride perpetuate the dangers present on the high seas. Share your takeaways with me! Leave a rating or review, or hit me up on Insta @mantalks

Weekly Training: Should You Break Up With Her Aug 27, 2020

Men, brace for some real talk. I’m asked this question a lot, and it can seem like a straightforward problem to tackle. At first. Any time it involves another person, it’s a big decision, and you owe it to both yourself and the person you’re with to really dig deep and ask the hard questions.
Listen in to hear what I ask back and what you need to ask yourself. As always, let me know what you think! Leave a rating or review, or share and tag @mantalks on Insta.

Reclaiming The Warrior and Its Shadow Aug 17, 2020
    Show notes

Is the warrior in us to blame for the division we see in today’s society? Yes...and no. Join me for an in-depth look at the warrior archetype. I cover its modes, its shadow, and why—and this might surprise you—it’s one of the best archetypes we have. From the warrior, we can light the fires of focus, develop clean anger instead of unhealthy aggression, set boundaries instead of borders, and leverage our unique capabilities to bring about positive change inside and outside. At the end, I detail several actionable steps you can take to cultivate and reclaim the warrior. Let me know your takeaways! Contact me on Insta @mantalks or leave a rating and review!

Weekly Training: Expanding Your Masculine Edge Aug 13, 2020
    Show notes

You engage, I respond! A recent post about meeting your edge generated a ton of responses both publicly and in my DMs, so I wanted to elaborate. Whether you call it the masculine, the yang, or something else, there’s a part of us that always craves moving towards our edge: our mental, physical, or spiritual limits. Meeting it with conscious practices can help expand us, but suppressing or avoiding it pushes it into the shadow, which can lead you away from what you really want.
So listen in to hear more about the edge, why it’s important, how I meet it, and what you can do to meet yours. Share your takeaways with me on Insta @mantalks, and share with one person you feel could benefit!

Weekly Training: What Is The Shadow? Aug 06, 2020
    Show notes

Today, I’m going to dive into shadow work. This is one of my favorite things to talk about, and you’ll hear me outline what the shadow archetype is, what shadow work is, and I’m also going to sprinkle in why shadow work is so valuable. I fundamentally believe everyone should do shadow work at some point, and I’ve seen the results firsthand.

There are many different access points to shadow work, but I’m going to talk mostly from the perspective of Carl Jung, the creator of the shadow archetype. Let me know your thoughts. Leave a review of this ep or tag me on Instagram!

Thinking Out Loud: The Soul of American Culture Is Dying Jul 30, 2020
    Show notes

Today, we're going to be talking about some current events. So this little segment, it's called "Thinking Out Loud", and it's just going to be me thinking out loud about some of things that are happening right now. I've had a lot of people reaching out to me asking what do I think about what's happening in terms of the rioting and the feds picking people up out of Portland and wanting me to comment on police reform and a lot of other topics. I sat with this, and wanted to come at it not from the place of talking about any one issue specifically, but moreso looking at the umbrella--the larger picture--of what's actually happening that's leading to all of these systemic failures within North American culture.
