What We Have Here Is A Failure to Communicate! (Series 2, Episode 8) Jul 11, 2017
    Show notes

It's time for a new series! We started this podcast digging deep into the foundation of our wiring, looking at a "family portrait" of showing your best strengths.

The "Be the Good, See the Good" series really laid out how we can live with intention by acknowledging how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us.

Introducing: Laughter, Humble Pie, and Lots of Sex!

"Expectation is premeditated resentment." - Alcoholics Anonymous

Click here to see a video of Nathan and Ashley talking about their top six essentials for a happy marriage, as well as learn "37 Tips To Save Your Marriage"

Create space for conversation - don't let it fester.

Follow through and commit to one another to be a united front. Don't compete, complete.

Heavy conversations don't happen in the bedroom. Take the negative energy outside.

What is your common goal? Love deeply, challenge each other, and know it's coming from a place of love.

Don't attack - create a place of trust, calling out an action without accusing the person.

Address something as soon as it pops up - don't let it fester.

Once you communicate it, let it go.

    Own your emotions - "I feel…" vs. "you did…"

Change your attitude - it's not about who is at fault, but "how can I change things to contribute and add to my life"

When you rebuild trust, allow the past to drop away. Sometimes we fixate on the drama of the past and carry that forward with everything we do. Let it go and create a clean slate.

Don't use absolutes. Own your own feelings and address what is going on in the moment.

Click here to see the Nail in the Head video and weigh in with your thoughts!

Communicate how you're feeling to those around you in a safe way - no blaming/finger-pointing.

Earn the right to communicate with love and honesty.

Every time you point a finger at someone else, there are three more pointing back at you.

Deposit in their lives with affirmation and positivity - so they feel loved and supported.

Address the situation at hand, not pulling in the whole past.

Questions/struggles in your marriage? Post in the Mama Says Namaste Facebook group or email ashley@MamaSaysNamaste.com.

Your challenge for this week is to communicate in a powerful and loving way to your significant other. Make deposits in your relationship.

It is hard to be emotionally distant when you physically connect.

Discuss the small things before they ever become the big things.

Do You Really Know Their Story? (Season 1, Episode 7) Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

This is the seventh - and final - episode in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

Today we wrap up how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

10 Essential Lessons for Life: Empathy

People sometimes have lives that are created in reaction to the pain they have experienced in their own lives.

How can you look for - and create - the world in which you thrive?

We aren't looking for a band-aid approach or viewpoint on life. What is the deeper story that may be causing the pain and/or reaction?

We need to have grace and compassion for one another - we are all humans, and we all have those not-so-great moments of parenting, and just being!

We have the choice to step out of our reaction and choose how we are going to move forward. We don't get it right every time, but that doesn't mean we've failed forever.

"The last thing we need in the midst of our struggle is shame for being human." -Brené Brown

There is Power In the Present Moment (Season 1, Episode 6) Jun 28, 2017
    Show notes

This is the sixth episode in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

"Your greatest powers is in the present moment. And, for the record, your cell phone is not the present moment." -Ashley Logsdon

Check out the Mama Says Namaste FaceBook discussion on the wife with the nail in her head here: Don't Try to Fix Me!

High D's are all about the end result. Bullet point emails and cutting straight to the chase are well appreciated by a high D. Remember, though, when you are looking at the end result, ask yourself, "What is your goal?" and make sure it is in a positive space.

When a high D is stressed out, look for a way to gain control - sometimes simply doing a "brain dump" and getting the thoughts out of your head and onto paper instead. Make a list - get it all out. Then start to prioritize and pick one thing.

Don't be the "jack of all trades, master of none." The One Thing by Gary Keller

Is your life really reflecting what you care about?

No task or thing is as important as people and relationships.

Think three times, speak only once. Ready, fire, aim may mean you can take fast action, but that's not always beneficial.

Practice being kind rather than being right.

Remain teachable and always take ownership of your own shortcomings.

    Characteristics of a high D:

    • Active
    • Confident
    • Courageous
    • Decisive
    • Fast-paced
    • Intense
    • Needs alone time
    • Strong-willed
    • Talkative
    • Opinionated
    • Challenges authority
    • Competitive
    • Determined
    • Goal-oriented
    • Hard worker
    • High energy
    • Fiercely independent
    • Born leader
    • Natural delegator/organizer
    • Not easily discouraged
    • Practical
    • Productive
    • Solution-oriented

    Their Motivations:

    • Give them a challenge
    • Allow them to feel in control
    • Give them a goal with a reward

    What Upsets Them:

    • Losing control
    • Feeling they don't have a choice
    • Feeling under appreciated

To Help A High D Child Grow (or an adult, for that matter!):

    • Be brief and to the point
    • Don't get into a power struggle
    • Encourage them to talk about their feelings and how others might feel - stress empathy
    • Teach them them how to really apologize (and the importance of doing so)
    • Help them to learn the benefits of being part of a team
    • Remind them that being kind can be more important than being right
    • Help them to unwind and relax
    • Identify ways for them to verbalize their frustration
    • Help them with flexibility - their agendas and expectations can be very frustrating when not met

    Encouraging Phrases:

    • I like how you stand up for what you believe in
    • I admire your courage
    • your confidence is really strong and will help you be successful
    • I like how you really stick to things and get things done
    • I love when you inspire others to act by pushing them with LOVE and not force!
    • I'm proud that you practice what you preach - you do a great job of acting on something and not just talking about it!

"Whenever you are pointing a finger at someone else, there are three more pointing back at you" Eleanor Coleman

    Parent Tips

    • As the parent, make sure you establish that you are in control, but give them authority over as much as is reasonable in their lives

    • "There are two lasting things we can give our children - one is roots, the other, wings" - allow for independence, even if it's easier to do it for them

    • Help your D child establish goals

    • Establish a responsibility chart so your child can see her progress and be encouraged by it

    • If your D child breaks a rule, responding with a clear consequence is very important. "Every action has a consequence"

    • "Relationships and people are always more important than things and tasks." - teach them to say "I'm sorry" and to be humble enough to learn from their mistakes

    • I feel strongly about this for every personality style, but especially with high D children, never "tattle" on them - talking about their faults to others in their presence. It's a betrayal of trust for them and you can quickly become the enemy. Let them know you are on their side and they can trust you to stand with them.

Get the Facts Straight, Man! (Season 1, Episode 5) Jun 24, 2017
    Show notes

This is the fifth in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

"Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it's the thing that's really preventing us from taking flight." -Brené Brown

Be careful not to live life in fast forward. Be intentional about taking the time to rest.

Cliff Ravenscraft is the genius behind podcasting that has helped both Dad and I get started. He's the "Podcast Answerman" and has his own podcast, "The Cliff Ravenscraft Show: Learn How To Podcast"

The high-C photographer that captures the details is Frank Kendralla

My daughter Clara is working hard on updating her website and sharing more about what she loves and seeing the world through her eyes. Check it out at www.ClaraLogsdon.com

You can see her book (and even her reading it to her sisters) here: What If It Were Possible

Being educated is more than just retaining information - it is essential that you don't just soak it in, but you live it out. Book knowledge is just that. It's a stepping stone in the right direction, but facts are not the whole picture. Take into account faith and connection - relationships always involve an element of the unknown.

A C can have everything logically laid out, but they cannot compartmentalize the power of choice. So every human interaction is going to involve a potential curve ball, and it's critical to remain open to that possibility, recognizing that no matter how it's been proven in the past, life does not always go as planned.

Take one step away from perfectionism and a step closer toward human connection. And that is what it's all about. Let go of the "rightness" of it all in a haphazard world, and keep that detailed focus on the balance of love and grace amidst imperfections.

Chatbooks: I love these little books!! For only $8/month, I get a new little 60-page flip book of all my instagram pictures. I go in and occasionally delete a few, but I really don't do much at all. It's an awesome little keepsake and the girls love flipping through them! Characteristics of a high C:

    • Detailed
    • Analytical
    • Logical
    • Systematic
    • Introspective
    • Large personal space
    • Introverted
    • Reserved
    • Realistic
    • Serious
    • Purposeful
    • Loves systems and details
    • Precise and accurate
    • Drained by people
    • Can be perfectionistic
    • Asks for lots of answers
    • Rule-follower
    • High standards
    • Prefers routine
    • Non-competitive
    • Likes charges, facts and lists
    • Schedule oriented
    • Can procrastinate (paralysis by analysis)

    Their Motivation:

    • Praise for hard work or focus
    • Creating order and analyzing details

    What Upsets Them:

    • Making mistakes
    • Being criticized

To help a high C grow:

    • Praise their high quality work
    • Promote a balance between work and play
    • Help them talk about their feelings
    • Show them that mistakes are not failure
    • Give them opportunities to learn about flexibility
    • Enjoy life in the present moment
    • Focus on the good and positive things
    • Teach them to accept compliments
    • Use humor
    • Check to make sure it's a good time to talk
    • Slow down
    • Allow them space
    • Let them process things on their own time

    Encouraging Phrases:

    • You really worked hard on that picture - I love the details!
    • Your discipline to get things done will be a skill that is important to your future success - great dedication
    • Thank you for helping me see that - sometimes I miss the details
    • I love to hear about what excites you
    • I'm glad that you recognize when you need space - you do a great job of staying focused and getting your work done

    Parent Tips :

    • When he is disappointed after recognizing he made a mistake, help your child learn that mistakes take him closer to his ultimate success.

    • Help your child understand that it is not her job to supervise everyone else's work.

    • Don't push your children into the limelight. Once they establish trust, they will then let loose a little more.

    • Encourage your child's creativity.

    • For a child that naturally keeps to themselves, make sure to reach out and touch them. Sometimes they can so easily stay in their personal bubble that it's a shock to get a hug. Ask permission, and cuddle with your little one. When they are upset, don't critique or fix - simply try hugging them in silence. Everyone needs human touch and connection, even when they don't recognize it.

"When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But when you LISTEN, you may learn something new." -Dalhai Llama

Greatest fear for a high I is rejection. Solitude, however, does not mean pure isolation. It's a time to connect with yourself and find peace in the quiet. The more we can establish that being alone is not a negative thing, the more a high I will have confidence in that space.

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." Jim Rohn

To show love/affirmation for a high S or I, it goes back to the feeling and relationship. For a D or C, boil it down to the task and their accomplishment.

    The brain physiology and DISC correlation relates back to Katherine Benziger's work - a great summary of it all is here: http://www.businessballs.com/benzigerpersonalityassessment.htm D & I = Frontal L/R, S & C = Basal L/R

It takes 3 seconds for a high D and I to process things, it takes 7 seconds for an S or C.

I know you want to see a picture of Ellie's "Sharpie Incident" - read the blog post here: http://www.mamasaysnamaste.com/high-i-style/

Characteristics of a High I Personality Style:

    • Cheerful
    • Creative
    • Touchy-feely
    • Friend to many
    • Loud
    • Outgoing
    • Life of the Party
    • Restless
    • Impulsive
    • High Energy
    • Charismatic
    • Warm and Approachable
    • Compulsive Talker
    • Class clown
    • Daydreamer/can be unfocused
    • Fast-paced
    • Easily multitasks
    • Great team player
    • Not great at details
    • At times, may not finish work
    • Easily distracted
    • Storyteller

    What Motivates Them:

    • feeling like they are a part of something
    • allowing them space to entertain
    • giving them your full attention

    What upsets them:

    • feeling isolated
    • not being able to talk or express themselves; feeling stifled

Parenting Tips to Help Your Child (or you) Grow:

    • Help them be aware of their surroundings
    • Teach them to work independently
    • Help them see the details
    • Teach them the benefits of planning ahead
    • Encourage improved listening skills
    • Structure some things - try bookending your day so it doesn't get away from you and get too chaotic
    • Allow for variety and changing interests
    • Let them entertain, and don't hold back on laughter in fun and love

Encouraging Phrases for a high I:

    • I like that you know how to have fun
    • You make people feel good being around you
    • Your enthusiasm is great!
    • I like that you always see the bright side in life!
    • You're fun to be with
    • Keep that light within you shining - it glows on others and spreads the love!
    • I love your creativity and excitement.

    Parent Tips

    • Help your I child become more organized by teaching him how to effectively use charts or a chore list

    • Help your I child to understand when to say no to friends and when it is important to be an individual. This is an important lesson for all styles, but requires a special emphasis for I children due to their natural need to be a part of a group.

    • When your I child needs to do a task (like homework), make sure you set aside time beforehand for them to have some fun and get their wiggles out.

    • If an I child misbehaves, the cold shoulder is just...cold. This feels like complete rejection to them. Instead, tell them what they did wrong, why it was wrong, and what the consequence will be. Alone time can be a teaching tool that isn't just shunning them - but helping them to sit with their thoughts without the distractions of friends, and really comprehend what they did. Always allow them to right their wrongs, so they feel fully back in good graces, and reassure them that you love them and know they will make a better choice next time!

The Seasons Of Life (Episode 003) Jun 09, 2017
    Show notes

This is the third in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." ~Marianne Williamson, A Return To Love

What kind of family life do you have? Do you walk on eggshells and cringe, waiting for the next bomb of conflict to drop in your home? Is this the family life you truly enjoy coming home to?

Ss are steady and stable. Reserved and yet people-focused. They listen and observe first, which definitely allows them to notice and be more aware of what is going on with others.

When you envision a dog, you think loyal, faithful, dependable and trustworthy. For a dove, you think of a peacemaker and love. Both of these are great descriptors for the S personality style. Of the Earth elements, Ds are fire, Is are air, and an S is water, with its smooth and steady flow.

"People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel." Maya Angelou

My mother, Joanne Miller, wrote "Creating a Haven of Peace: When Your Feeling Down, Finances are Flat and Tempers are Rising" - she lays out how she broke the cycle of disfunction in her family and intentionally created the "haven of peace" she wanted in her own home.

"Don't ever mistake my silence for ignorance, my calmness for acceptance, or my kindness for weakness." Carson Kolhoff

The Logsdon family countdown - I was juggling managing www.48Days.com, building www.MamaSaysNamaste.com, unschooling three children, getting the house ready for us to leave indefinitely, and prepping it to be an AirBnB. Nathan was in real estate and super busy with housing market in Nashville, TN.

With selling, sometimes it's all about semantics. S's don't "sell,", they "serve." Simply switching the terminology from them "selling" to "serving" their client can make a very dynamic and successful salesperson, as they easily see things from other perspectives and can identify the need to truly serve their clients.

Are you really lazy and apathetic, or are you simply avoiding conflict and pressure? Maybe it's more about security than personal lack of drive.

We had a marriage-centered home - our relationship took priority over our children, and they knew this. We enforced a "7-7 Rule", which meant kids were in their beds by 7pm at night - even if they were older and didn't need to sleep then. This time was sacred for Nathan and me to reconnect, hash out the day and process it all so we could be better parents for our children the next day. Having a marriage focused relationship does not mean kids suffer. I feel it makes children more secure knowing their parents are a united front.

We are very careful with the energy that comes into our home. Negative or difficult topics aren't brushed under the rug; however, they are not what we bring into our house. Our back porch became our safe place to let it all out in the open air. We chose to bring love, peace and connection back under our roof.

A great book to help you with the baby steps to take action in your life is The One Thing by Gary Keller

For an S-style, there are many things being thrown their way, and sometimes complacency is the easiest way to get through. They are peacemakers and tend to be the go-to when teen drama erupts. It can be a lot of pressure to be the shoulder to cry on for every friend, and the stress of carrying everyone else's burdens can be overwhelming. A coping mechanism may be to numb the emotions by TV, internet/video games, sleeping, drinking/smoking to dull the intensity to a more manageable level. When you see them start to shut down, look for ways to provide some security and consistency in an otherwise roller-coaster life. Not only are they steady, dependable and loyal, but they crave this - steadiness, dependability and loyalty - in their own lives.

Relationships have seasons. We shift from the parent/toddler relationship, to parent/child, tween, teen, young adult…and eventually the shift is where they are no longer just children but making parenting choices for their parents. All relationships have seasons, and that's okay.

Love is a verb - it's not something that just sits there.

It's an action you do every day.

Make sure you communicate the small things before they become big things.

Practice positive self-talk and push yourself to get out of your comfort zone a bit.

Create consistency in your life, even when there are unknowns. Be intentional about creating steady habits that allow for some routine and predictability to help you manage the unpredictable chaos of life.

Characteristics of an S personality style:

    • Loyal
    • Kind
    • Calm & Steady
    • Low Energy
    • Observant
    • Reliable
    • Non-confrontational
    • Indecisive
    • Competent
    • Peacemaker
    • Patient
    • Follows through with tasks
    • Sensitive
    • Quiet but witty
    • Respects authority
    • Loves to serve and support others
    • Resists change
    • Resents being pushed and can shut down/become passive aggressive
    • Easygoing
    • Relaxed

    They are motivated by:

    • Deep connections with others
    • Feeling needed (emphasize you need their help)

    They are upset by:

    • Feeling insecure and/or overwhelmed

    To help foster the relationship:

    • Help them to express their feelings (don't wait until it's a mountain - address the little molehills)
    • Teach them how to make an informed decision so they have confidence in their ability
    • Help them adapt to a faster pace when needed
    • Teach them how to stand up for themselves: Kindness does not equal weakness!
    • Practice positive self-talk
    • Get involved in outside activities
    • Encourage them to step outside their comfort zone - change can be positive!
    • Give space, but don't allow them to shut down

    Encouraging phrases:

    • I so appreciate your help
    • I love your compassionate heart
    • I love hearing what you have to say
    • Thank you for being so patient with me.
    • You really thought that through - that shows me how important it was to you
    • I really am grateful for your support

    Final Tips:

    • If you are angry, tone it down. Strong aggressive approaches are too intimidating.

    • Your tone of voice and body language immediately set the stage for whether your child is able to listen or is retreating from conflict.

    • Allow for some consistency and routine in your daily life so your S child has comfort in the predictability.

    • Give your S child some time to adapt to changes. If you know of some change coming, give them advance notice so they can prepare and be able to think and talk through concerns.

    • High Ss don't care for surprises. They want time to plan and process.

    • Ss, when hurt, can build up resentment and carry deep grudges. Work through ways to process and let things go, and stress the importance of letting the negative emotions out instead of stuffing them in.

Best "cheat sheet" to find out personality style?

    Ask this question:

    "Tell me your story"

. A high S style will tell you about the relationships first. An adult will immediately tell you they are a mother, father, husband, wife, etc and tell about the family members. A kid will tell you about their pets, their siblings, and their friends. The first identifier for them will be the relationships they have.

The Collaboration of Life (Episode 002) Jun 02, 2017
    Show notes

This is the second in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

    It's a quotation, not a quote.

"We must learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and imperfection. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot be fully open to our ability to love others, or to our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and openhearted vision of people who embrace life." - John Lennon

"Whenever you point a finger at someone else, there are three others pointing back at you." - Eleanor Coleman (Aunt Arger)

We can't change everyone else, but we DO have the power to change ourselves.

A grocery day - four mamas go shopping (a story about personality styles)

D Wiring - People who score high in the intensity of the "D" styles factor take a very active stance in dealing with problems and challenges. Not afraid of confrontation, Ds are described as a born leader, independent and self sufficient, goal-oriented, "big picture" visionary, fast-paced and decisive.

I Wiring - People with high "I" scores influence others through their gift of entertainment. They are engaging storytellers and the life of the party. They are described as charismatic, magnetic, enthusiastic, persuasive, warm, demonstrative, trusting and optimistic.

S Wiring - People with high "S" scores are slower-paced, more easygoing, and are excellent listeners. High S people are supportive, calm, relaxed, patient, predictable, deliberate, stable and consistent.

C Wiring - People with high "C" styles are highly logical and love facts and statistics. They adhere to rules, regulations and structure. They like to do quality work and do it right the first time. High C people are analytical, careful, cautious, exacting, neat, systematic, diplomatic, accurate and detailed.

Sometimes we limit our thinking to just what affects us, and we miss out on the collaboration of life. Move away from the limiting view of "me" and move into the growth view of "we".

We all have our own perspective on the world and the culture based on the location where we live..and then we have another culture within our family dynamics. Each affects the way we interpret the world. Understanding the different personality styles is an incredibly powerful way to decipher the best way to interpret or convey a message to someone.

Like yoga, communication is all about finding that perfect balance between your needs and theirs. You want to find that "sweet spot" of communication. We can rant and rave, pressure and cajole, and still not get the result we want. We can shut down and withdraw, but that doesn't bring anyone closer together. What we need is that perfect balance between communicating the feelings that are within us in a way that another truly understands and can relate to.

Do You Really "See" Others? (Season 1, Episode 1) Jun 02, 2017
    Show notes

This is the first in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.

We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.

"What we don't need in the midst of our struggle is shame for being human." -Brené Brown

Don't wait until you're perfect to help another. This is where we can connect and relate and realize that we're human - and that's a beautiful thing.

If you want to connect with another, meet them where they are at. Don't expect them to jump to your perspective just because that's the way you see it.

When you take into account each child's personality style, your ability to connect in a way that resonates with them is so much easier.

There are many variations of what "Namaste" really means, but the essence is "the peace within my soul recognizes the peace within yours." Wouldn't it be nice if Americans greeted one another in such a meaningful way?

When people understand their personality style and lean into their own natural strengths, amazing results occur, and they begin to better understand their children at a deeper level.

The DISC we will be discussing is the four quadrant behavioral model based on the work of William Moulton Marston, Ph.D. (1893-1947) which he developed to examine the behavior of individuals in their environment or within a specific situation. DISC looks at an individuals' behavioral styles and behavioral preferences. This is not to label people or put them in a category but rather to build a bridge to understanding strengths, needs, motivations and ultimately improved relationship.

Understanding DISC gives us a vocabulary to explain and relate to one another.

It does not give us an excuse or a label for a behavior.

Every person has a vantage point you can only experience through your connection with them.

Like a rainbow that has seven key colors, there are thousands of other shades of those seven, and they all are a blend of more than one color. These other factors, plus the four personality styles, are all going to blend to create your unique color that will be represented somewhere on the spectrum.

You don't necessarily have a weakness as much as you have a negative reaction with one of your strengths.
