We bid farewell to October by having Halloween Queens’ Natalie Burris back on the pod to dissect the late ‘90s fashions of Urban Legend! This post-Scream slasher is stacked with the hottest stars of the era, with the killer terrorizing college kids by referencing Urban Legends. A super fun concept with great costume design by Mary Claire Hannan (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Jackie Brown, Red Eye, Four Rooms!). We love the autumn-esque, Gilmore Girls vibe of Alicia Witti's final girl's turtlenecks, Danielle Harris as the goth roommate in all of her Hot Topic deliciousness, and Tara Reid's sexy looks as the campus radio host/sex advice columnist. Questions we have: was Sasha's (Tara Reid) Halloween costume somehow based on Tiffany from Bride of Chucky (it may have been filming at the same time?!), and was Niecy Nash's character in Scream Queens inspired by Loretta Devine in this film?

We get into Sidney’s (Neve Campbell) relaxed final girl style and accessory ode to her dead ex, Parker Posey as the hilarious, stylish, cool-girl Jennifer Jolie, and, of course, Gale’s (Courtney Cox) bangs!

Miss Lisa (Kathryn Newton) is an angsty teen who has a meet-cute with a reanimated corpse (Cole Sprouse) and goes on a murdering spree to put his dismembered body back together. Brilliantly costumed by Meagan McLaughlin (Happy Death Day, Mike, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Lisa’s sartorial evolution goes from quiet, angsty teen to IDGAF goth girlie (greatly inspired by Winona Ryder in Heathers). Costume designer Julie Weiss (Frida, American Beauty) put this deliciously talented crew of women (Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis) in big shoulder pads, cat-eye glasses, fur coats and overalls, and church hats galore! We discuss the alleged Mob Wife trend and thee armadillo cake; Blaire celebrates Ouiser’s (Shirley’s) eccentric Southern Lady glam, and Marie attempts to make Truvee’s (Dolly’s) cuppa cuppa cuppa cake (1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 fruit cocktail with the syrup). Boudoir Chic and 'Ringmaster Red' in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) Jan 19, 2024

Y’all come back now, ya hear? In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie musical, Dolly Parton is Miss Mona, the madam of the local Chicken Ranch, a historic and beloved brothel in a small Texas town. Sheriff Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds) helps out Miss Mona by looking out for the brothel, but the duo runs into trouble when TV personality Melvin Thorpe tries to expose the ranch. Dolly's outfits are a serious boudoir chic feast for the eyes, with ruffles, lace, feathers, sequins, and floor-length “ringmaster red” garments, costumed by the late, great Theodora Van Runkle (Troop Beverly Hills).

As usual, we break down our favorite looks but also discuss Burt Reynold’s hunkdom (and how we’d cast Pedro Pascal in his role for our imaginary remake). There’s also chisme about Dolly and Burt hating each other during filming, so Blaire has a request for Ryan Murphy: to make the next installment of Feud be about their drama!

Violet (Lily Tomlin), Judy (Jane Fonda), and Doralee (Dolly) are all coworkers who have HAD it with their sexist jerk of a boss (Dabney Coleman), and things get out of hand after their revenge fantasy goes awry. There are serious layers to the ladies' costumes that you won’t want to miss.

Bad-Girl Berets and 'Gilmore Girl Aesthetic' in All I Wanna Do (1998) Dec 15, 2023

Up your ziggy with a wa-wa brush! In All I Wanna Do, our girl Kiki Dunst is a rebel at a 1960s all-girls high school with Gaby Hoffman, Monica Keena, Heather Matarazzo, and Rachel Leigh Cook. The girls are part of a secret club called D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Ravioli), in which they share their post-graduation dreams and vow to help each other attain them no matter what. Once the school threatens to become co-ed, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands and raise some hell! The private school looks are retro cute and inspire us to want to wear berets, knee socks, and 60s dresses. Costume design by Ann Hould-Ward and Julie Whitfield! Tune in now!

I said, Brrr! It's cold in here! Grab your pom-poms because it's time for Bring it On! For our first film for Dunstcember, we’re discussing this 2000 cheer-com starring Kirsten Dunst as the captain of a high school cheerleading squad who discovers her team’s legacy has all been a lie! Costume design is by the amazing Mary Jane Fort (Mean Girls). We talk about the difference between the Toros’ uniforms and East Compton Clovers’ fashion-forward looks, the Buddha graphic clothing item that was everywhere, Canyon Group robes, and Cliff’s (Jesse Bradford) choice of band shirts. Blaire also educate us on something she calls Food Jail, inspired by a celebrity’s *interesting* food combinations. And Marie guesses the character’s zodiac signs for our Cosmic Costumes segment.

Angsty Teen Goth Style in Ginger Snaps (2000) Oct 27, 2023

To finish October, we’re talking about 2000's Ginger Snaps on the pod this week! The film, which Marie describes as the Canadian precursor to Jennifer’s Body, is about two sisters named Ginger and Brigitte who are super close (and super angsty!). One day, Ginger gets her period for the first time, AND bit by a werewolf, and becomes a real ravenous b****! There are a lot of parallels between this and Jennifer's Body, such as the opposites-attract dynamic between the sisters, the blood-hungry transformation, and even the makeover moment reveal that happens during an iconic slow-motion, walking down the hallway scene.

Costume designer Lea Carlson put Ginger and Brigitte in oversized cardigans, maxi skirts, thin choker necklaces, and animal skull jewelry. Forgot Gilmore Girls fall fashion, it’s all about Ginger Snaps werewolf-girl style! We also talk about House of Usher Raymond and the Y2Kills exhibit at Mystic Museum in LA, and we reminisce about going to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Night back in the day. Keeping with our October whores4horror theme, this episode is on the feminist horror flick Run Sweetheart Run, one of Blaire’s faves! Cherie (Ella Balinska) is a single mom and secretary at an LA law firm who has to go to dinner with her boss’ client. Sure, he may be hot and rich, but he’s actually a bloodthirsty demon who chases her all around the city. Dating in LA is hard! Costume designer Nadine Haders used touches of symbolic red throughout the film and other interesting choices, like a decorated military jacket and karate suits. Other things we discuss? Oh, just the great Hoe Bag vs. Slut Kit debate, men in gray sweatpants, and Blaire reminisces about her interesting night at Schwartz and Sandy’s (for all your Vanderpump peeps). Tune in, now!

We've already done the sequel (as we sometimes go backward on this here pod), but now is the time to celebrate our Croaker Queen Helen Shivers's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) totally modern cut-out dress and sophisticated New York-inspired 'fits. Murder Robes and Chanel Vamp in Bound (1996) With Special Guest Krista Burton Aug 11, 2023

Writer and author Krista Burton is on the pod to discuss the Wachowskis’ iconic lesbian neo-noir film, Bound! She also tells us all about her incredible new book, Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest To Track Down The Last Remaining Lesbian Bars In America, and her experiences traveling the country to write it! Now, for those who haven’t seen Bound, it stars Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as Corky and Violet, an ex-con and gangster girlfriend respectively, who scheme together steal millions of stashed mob money. The costumes are by the Oscar-winner Lizzy Gardiner (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Mission Impossible II, Ticket to Paradise), and while there aren’t a ton of looks, they looked DAMN GOOD. We also talk about the legendary Chanel Vamp nail polish, murder robes, Krista playing the jaw harp as a child, and how we’re going to hold a lock-picking party in honor of Corky. Pink Taffeta and Polyester Mumus in She-Devil (1989) Jun 26, 2023

We are absolutely thrilled to have the fabulous Bri Luna of The Hoodwitch on the podcast today to talk about one of her favorite movies, She-Devil! The 1989 flick stars Roseanne Barr as a jilted housewife who devises a long-con revenge on her cheating husband and the romance novelist who stole him (Meryl Streep in one of her most underrated roles). Costume designer Albert Wolsky takes the characters through a fantastical voyage of clothes, beginning with caricatures of extreme femininity and stereotypes of the forgotten housewife, then into a transformation that is both sartorial and spiritual. It’s a makeover like no other!

Bri opens our eyes to the movie’s many unseen layers: looking at it through a magickal lens, and how the two main characters can be interpreted as Lilith and Eve. It’s so much more about revenge (one of our favorite genres); it also explores the dichotomy of womanhood, female repression and oppression, and the power of the underdog. You're going to want to eat an eclair in the bathtub while you tune into this extremely Taurus, Libra, and Scorpio-esque movie now!

We talk about the famous lavender Hervé Léger bandage dress that Sandra wears the moment she transforms into Gracie Lou Freebush, as well as other favorite looks like her dirndl dress and business boudoir, kill-your-husband robe. We discuss Usher’s lawsuit against the fashion brand, Josh Hartnett’s iconic hair, the fake gothery of it all, and the entertaining trope of fake drug names in movies. Blaire talks abut how she’d handle being locked away and Marie works through her trauma about all the Tommy Hilfiger in the film. It’s a real journey up in here!

Especially since we rarely get to see her play these type of “unlikeable” characters! As for costumes, there are a few glamorous standouts from costume designer Sarah Mae Burton (The King of Staten Island, The Big Sick) but it's really all about Miss Barrymore.

This 1998 dark “rom-com” stars Drew as a pregnant, Dolly Parton-obsessed Burger-Matic employee whose baby daddy is literally frightened to death by his two stepsons, one being played by Luke Wilson. Costumes are by Jill M. Ohanneson (who we talked about in our Bill and Ted episode and who did Revenge, Six Feet Under, and tons more). Jill put a curly-haired Drew in floral print dresses and cardigans for a sweet Southern girl look. While we’re sad an alleged Dollywood scene was cut out of this quirky movie, we have a blast talking about all things Drew! (Including her apparent “workplace crush” on Jim Carrey during the filming of Batman Forever.)

Break out the crab dip, baby! November may have just begun, but we’ve already got our minds on New Year’s Eve—specifically 1982, when a little ol’ movie called 200 Cigarettes took place. The movie came out in 1999 and featured numerous familiar faces, many who were just lil baby celebrities at the time (Kate Hudson, Christina Ricci, Ben Affleck, Courtney Love, Paul Rudd, and SO many more). We follow all of the characters during one fateful NYE night as they make their way across New York City to get to a party. The ‘fits are FAB and costumed by thee Susan Lyall who we talked about in our Empire Records and also did Molly’s Game, the Trial of the Chicago 7, Being the Ricardos, and more. Listen, if you’ve ever found yourself compelled to don leopard print, or a furry coat, tights and heels as a New Year’s Eve outfit, this movie might have been why.

The Invitation (2022) Oct 28, 2022

The Invitation (2022) is about Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), a New Yorker who finds out she has long-lost family members so she travels to the English countryside to meet them. There, she also meets the hunkety-hunk lord of the manor, Mista Walter De Ville (Thomas Doherty). As Evie eases into her British aristocratic surroundings, her outfits go cool, artsy, NYC-funky to stunningly elaborate, thanks to costume designer Danielle Knox. Spoiler: We loved them all! The movie is described in one review as one part Get Out, one part Ready or Not, and one part Dracula, so if that also tickles your fang-cy, give it a watch and tune into our episode!

Do Revenge (2022) Sep 20, 2022

Surprise, bitches, it's a bonus ep! Marie and Blaire are radiating some serious Glennergy right now because they are in love with Do Revenge. The new Netflix movie stars Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke as two teens who decide to perform the other’s revenge, Strangers on a Train style. It has been a while since we watched a brand-new film that TRULY embodies the Fishnet Flix spirit, and Do Revenge is it. We were overwhelmed with the amount of jaw-dropping looks in this movie, which were designed by Alana Morshead. Do Revenge is a whole package, from the costumes, to the writing, to the soundtrack, we’re giving it two thumbs up and a rewind. It’s jam-packed with ‘90s movie Easter eggs, homages, and references from top to bottom in a fun (and non-annoying) way. Ancient millennials approved! 10 outta 10, baby!

Costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (Oceans Eleven, Tenet, Erin Brockovich) put Roberts in custom-made masculine silhouettes in muted hues, while Diaz is in colorful, uber preppy, Lilly Pulitzer-esque looks. We also discuss favorite perfumes (Fenty), this wild season of Atlanta, Blaire’s obsession with haupia pudding, and coin a new handbag trend: BPE (Big Purse Energy).

Costumes were by Catherine Marie Thomas (Kill Bill, The Proposal, The Flight Attendant) who designed the titular dresses that were so distinct and over-the-top, they received special nicknames from Thomas and her team, ranging from Gone With the Wind trash-fabulous, to a bright yellow “Peep’s Dress,” a hot pink, ruffled “Bahama Mama,” and more. Costume Designer Jeriana San Juan Talks "Halston" and Vintage Fashion Feb 20, 2022

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan joins us on the pod to discuss her work on Netflix’s limited series "Halston," of which she is nominated for a Costume Design Guild Award: Excellence in Period Television (and was also nominated for an Emmy last year). Jeriana nailed so many of Halston’s trademark designs so beautifully, from his tie-dye chiffon caftans, backless halter dresses, and ultra suede trench dresses, to the stage-ready sequins for his muse, Liza Minnelli, and so much more.

Listen to her talk about recreating this stunning world of Halston (there were over 2000 costumes!), how she taught Ewan McGregor how to sew, drape and “move like a designer," all the Easter eggs she put in (and the ones she wanted to but was forbidden to, lol), and why kimonos are the gateway drug to collecting vintage fashion.

For the last episode of Drewcember and this podcast season, we're doing something a little different and picking a movie where Drew isn't the lead: Donnie Darko! The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a sleepwalking '80s teen who has visions of a scary rabbit man named Frank who tells him that the world will end in 28 days. Drew plays his teacher and her company, Flower Films, produced the film. Costumes were by April Ferry, who did Game of Thrones, Big Trouble in Little China, Jurassic World, the OG Child's Play, and so much more. There isn't a ton to discuss for costumes and looks but we spot a few gems!

Happy Libra Season! We’re discussing the feel-good 1990’s film Mermaids, which stars Cher as a single mom to a teen Winona Ryder and lil’ Christina Ricci in early 1960s New England. Costumes were by the incredible Merit Allen who also did Eyes Wide Shut, La Vie En Rose, and The Witches, and who was also a fashion journalist and editor at British Vogue and icon of the Swinging Sixties era. Ryder’s Catholicism-obsessed character wears prudish Peter Pan collared shirts with knee-length skirts, while Cher is a brunette Peggy Bundy in capri pants, cha cha heels, polkadot dresses, and, of course, an iconic mermaid costume. "She always felt like half a person. Half a person with half a soul." We’re closing out stripper month with the 2007 Lindsay Lohan cult classic I Know Who Killed Me (aka Parent Trappin’ per Blaire). Lohan plays a college student who is tortured by a sadistic serial killer, then when she is found, claims to be a stripper named Dakota. This movie has everything: Twin Peaks vibes, a decent amount of gore for horror heads, the woman who plays the nun in The Nun, an Art Bell cameo for Coast to Coast fans, two Real Housewives, and a Sphynx cat with big balls. The 1996 cult film stars Reese Witherspoon as a white trash Little Red Riding Hood who's trying to make it to her grandma's house when she goes head-to-head with a serial killer. It's trashy, violent, and incredibly offensive, but worth it to see Reese in the role of her life! The costumes (by Merrie Lawson) are scarce, but it's quality over quantity — they bring us right back to growing up as teens in SoCal. Promising Young Woman Mar 17, 2021

We’ve got sumthin’ a little different this week. It’s a heavy, dark, revenge flick, but we PROMISE it’s a good one. The recently Oscar-nominated movie, Promising Young Woman, stars Carey Mulligan as Cassandra, a woman who goes out to a different bar or club each night, pretends to get completely knock-down, blackout drunk with the purpose of luring a “nice guy” to take her home. At first, you don’t think this is going to be a “costume movie,” but it's interesting how Cassandra dresses up in different “disguises'' whenever she's on the prowl — a sharp contrast to the pastel sweaters and dresses she wears during the daytime. Costumes are by Nancy Steiner who did Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and a ton more. Tune in now!

It’s a very special day here on Fishnet Flix! We hit tha big 100, babys! And we’re celebrating our 100th episode with a trip back to Zamunda with Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1998 Eddie Murphy comedy. Costumes are by our queen, Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther, B.A.P.S.), so you know there’s not a bad look in sight. We talk about our fave outfits, all the gold and animal-themed jewelry we’re adding to cart, and how we’ve come a long way since we started the pod (particularly, Blaire’s online shopping habit). Romeo + Juliet Feb 22, 2021

Where were you when you first saw Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio lock eyeballs through the fish tank in Romeo + Juliet? Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation of the Shakespearean teenage tragedy is a hyper-stylized fever dream that we’re STILL obsessing over 25 years later. Costume designer Kym Barrett (The Matrix trilogy, Us, Aquaman) put Danes in those iconic angel wings while dressing the rival Montague and Capulet boy-gangs in a perfect contradiction of Hawaiian shirts and D&G. The movie, the costumes, and the soundtrack still hold up.

Waiting To Exhale Feb 08, 2021

Today’s episode is on Waiting to Exhale, the Terry McMillan-novel-turned-1995 film starring the late, great Whitney Houston, alongside Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine as four friends living in Phoenix Arizona, looking for love in alllll the wrong f***boys. It’s a movie filled with as many irresistible lines as there are costumes — from designer Judy L. Ruskin (Sleepless in Seattle, Bruce Almighty) that are somehow both timeless and deliciously ’90s at the same time. We won’t blame you if you start quoting the movie nonstop (esp. Bernadette's fire-setting monologue), or listen to the iconique soundtrack (which was produced by Babyface, and features Brandy, SWV, and, of course, Whitney) all week long.

We also discuss whether or not we should give The Wedding Planner another chance...

We’re kicking off Valentine’s month with the moment we’ve all been waiting for, an episode on True Romance, the 1993 Tarantino-scripted, Tony Scott-directed film about a comic book nerd and a call girl who fall in love and go on the run. Yes, we see Gary Oldman with his locs, leopard print robe, and Jamaican patois, but Patricia Arquette rocks Every. Single. Damn. Look. as Alabama Worley. The cute, quirky, fun, and timeless costumes are by Susan Becker (The Lost Boys! Father of the Bride!). The cropped sweatshirt look is definitely in these days, hello, Bill S. Preston, Esquire. Costumes are by Jill M. Ohanneson (Six Feet Under, Revenge, Preacher).

In this episode, we talk about how a fashion historian uses the brief Beethoven scene as a benchmark for all Regency-era movies and debate whether or not teens still use binders. Also, Blaire realizes she’s never seen the 1993 erotic thriller, Sliver.

Plus it co-stars Brittany Murphy and we're sad this is the only movie she and Drew did together since they have the best chemistry.

This weird, lesser-known film from 1993 film stars our shero, Drew Barrymore, as a woman named Holly Gooding who moves to LA and claims she's being haunted by her evil, murderous doppelganger! We’re almost done with this month’s Season of the Witch series, but wanted to sneak in a special mini-episode! If you’ve ever seen the 1995 anthology film, Four Rooms, you know that there’s a segment directed by Allison Anders (Mi Vida Loca) about a coven of witches (including Madonna!) that gather in a hotel room on New Year’s Eve to resurrect their goddess, Diana. It’s short but sweet, and the costumes (by Susan L. Bertram and Mary Claire Hannan) are to die for. Blessed be!

We’re continuing with October's season of the witch series with Hocus Pocus (1993)! We discuss the Sanderson Sisters steeze, plus comfy fall sweaters and on-trend tie dye. Costumes are by the fabulous Mary Vogt, who did Batman Returns and Crazy Rich Asians. We also talk about what horror movies and spooky shows we’re watching this week (Haunting of Bly Manor, Exorcist III), how there are two different kinds of "Halloween people," and reminisce about our annual tradition of going to Halloween Horror Nights. We also butt heads about Nightmare Before Christmas (Marie agrees with Ryan Gosling that it ruins the Disneyland Haunted Mansion during Halloween, while Blaire is a fan of all thing NBC. "This sounds like a betrayal," says Blaire.) Tune in now!

Blaire and Marie discuss the new reboots of The Craft and The Witches, tuxedo shirts, bolo ties, acid wash, "shenanigans," and praise Richie, the hilarious little brother played by Joshua John Miller (who should have gotten an Oscar for this role TBQH).
