DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY
Writer: Paul Dini
Artist: Eduardo Risso
Publisher: DC Comics/Vertigo
Cover Price: $9.99 (Digital)
Walking home one evening, Dini was jumped and viciously beaten. With several broken bones and a shattered face, Dini experienced an arduous recovery process, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television, including the Joker, Harley Quinn, and the Penguin. But despite how bleak his circumstances were, or perhaps because of it, Dini also always imagined the Batman at his side, constantly chivvying him along during his darkest moments.

While most know the Caped Crusader as the all-abiding icon of justice and authority, in this surprising story, we see Batman in a new light—not as the dark avenger, but the savior who helped a discouraged man recover mentally from a brutal attack that left him unable to face the world.

Wayne’s Comics Podcast #482: Interviews with Frank Martin and Sean McArdle Apr 18, 2021

Show notes

I hope you’re ready for another great doubleheader this week in Episode 482, because it features Frank Martin and Sean McArdle!

First up is the return of Frank Martin, who has a Kickstarter for the first part of The Last Homicide, which is already going here at this link! It’s described this way: “On the eve of retirement, a cop must stop a mob war by solving the murder of a crime boss' son in this homage to classic pulp mystery.” This crime noir mystery deserves your support, so be sure to pledge as soon as this episode is cover!

Then everything wraps up with my latest great conversation with Sean McArdle from the excellent comic The Furher and the Tramp from Source Point Press. The collected edition is coming soon! Here’s the book’s description: “Charlie Chaplin - comic, filmmaker, and raconteur didn't become the world's biggest star by courting controversy, but when he comes face-to-face with the horrors of Hitler, he feels compelled to get off the sidelines and get involved. And then Charlie is approached by FDR himself with a special assignment. His mission, if he chooses to accept it: create a propaganda film to drum up public support for joining the war in Europe!” We talk about the series, which I truly enjoy, and that includes the characters, the surprises, and that Sean might have even more in store for us in the months ahead! Be sure to let your LCS know you want this title!

Young Heroes in Love
Writer: Dan Raspier
Artist: Dev Madan
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: June 1997
Young Heroes in Love was an American comic book series published by DC Comics; it ran for 18 issues (including the #1,000,000 issue) from 1997 to 1998. An uncommon combination of the superhero and romance genres, it introduced two LGBT male characters into the DC Universe – Frostbite and Off-Ramp – who were depicted becoming a couple, which was considered groundbreaking for the time. Unusual for a comic set in an established publisher-owned universe, Dan Raspler and Dev Madan retained copyright to the stories and art.
