Miles Baumgartner lost his boyfriend. His house. His job. Worst of all, he lost his nephew when Ian—his almost-son—died, mangled in a car crash nine months ago.So how is there a recent photo of Ian on Facebook?Miles follows a trail of rumors and half-truths to a long-abandoned orphanage in the Wisconsin Northwoods. But St. Hamelin’s is not as empty as he expected. Secrets haunt the shadowed halls. Horrors slink within darkened rooms. Snowbound, Miles hunts for the truth of what really happened to Ian and the children of that unholy place. They say that time heals all wounds, but time is running out for Miles. His personal demons have awakened. The terrors tighten their grip. To have any chance of starting a new life, he must escape before malignant forces curse him to walk eternally with the evils inhabiting St. Hamelin’s. Michael Schutz was born and raised in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, where the macabre tales of Ray Bradbury and Stephen King kept him warm at night. He’s seen way too many horror movies to be healthy. His short fiction has been featured in Crossroads in the Dark II, III, and IV, Ravenwood Quarterly, Dark Moon Digest, and Sanitarium. He is the author of the novels Plank Children, Edging, and Blood Vengeance. He lives with his naughty cat-children in northern California. Theme music for Madame Perry's Salon composed and performed by Denton Perry. Authors! Race Against Time Author Jerry Mitchell Dec 01, 2020
    Show notes

Race Against Time is an astonishing, courageous story capturing a historic race for justice, as the past is uncovered, clue by clue, and long-ignored evils are brought into the light. This is a landmark book and essential reading for all Americans. On June 21, 1964, more than twenty Klansmen murdered three civil rights workers. The killings, in what would become known as the Mississippi Burning case, were among the most brazen acts of violence during the civil rights movement. And even though the killers’ identities, including the sheriff’s deputy, were an open secret, no one was charged with murder in the months and years that followed. It took forty-one years before the mastermind was brought to trial and finally convicted for the three innocent lives he took. If there is one man who helped pave the way for justice, it is investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell. For almost two decades, investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell doggedly pursued the Klansmen responsible for some of the most notorious murders of the civil rights movement. This book is his amazing story. Thanks to him, and to courageous prosecutors, witnesses, and FBI agents, justice finally prevailed. —John Grisham, author of The Guardians

Linguist and Poet Lisa Smartt Visits Madame Perry's Salon Nov 25, 2020
    Show notes

Lisa Smartt, MA, is a linguist, educator, and poet. A person’s last words often take on an eerie significance, giving tantalizing clues about the ultimate fate of the human soul. Until recently, however, no one had systematically studied end-of-life communication by using examples from ordinary people. Linguist Lisa Smartt changed all that with the Final Words Project, which she established in conjunction with world-renowned afterlife expert Raymond Moody. The project chronicles the linguistic patterns and themes behind the words people speak as they leave this world behind. Smartt's book Words at the Threshold: What We Say as We’re Nearing Death (New World Library, March 15, 2017) shares the findings of her research into this unchartered territory. After building an unsuccessful national breast cancer outreach tour around the advice given by prominent social media marketers, and subsequent success in doing the same tour again the following year by using tactics he knew to work, B.J. went on to write a book called Social Media Is Bullshit based on his experience. He later earned additional media attention for frequently taking on prominent social media experts and companies. Mendelson has also appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Yahoo! News, the CBC, TechCrunch, The Huffington Post, and numerous other national outlets to talk about these myths and who actually benefits from the hype. B.J. Mendelson founded Earth's Temporary Solution in his dorm room at Alfred State College during the Fall of 2001. He would later miss the 2002-2003 academic school year at Alfred to handle booking and promote fifty-five sold out shows across the East Coast during that time. The shows were sold out using almost exclusively online marketing tactics and offline networking.
