Ways to deal with anxiety, when you have tried every trick in the book.
In my opinion it takes true strength and a HUGE amount of courage to cope with anxiety, as it is an ongoing problem that doesn’t just go away overnight. Anxiety can leave you feeling lost and alone; and like no one understands how you feel, which is why so many people suffer with it in silence.
Let me tell you first of all, that from my experience isolating yourself is the WORST thing that you could possibly do. Whether you want to cancel plans with friends, call in sick to work, or just avoid going out in public at all because your anxiety has decided to kick in; don’t let it control you! Easier said than done right? Oh trust me. I know..
If you allow your anxiety to take over your life, you will lose your sense of self purpose and forget who you really are. Instead, challenge it! Push yourself to do something that scares you! This could be anything from phoning someone to getting out there and meeting new people. After you have bitten the bullet, see how you feel after.. Surprisingly I’ve found that nine times out of ten I feel 100% better after and have the confidence and motivation to do it again. Weird right? It makes you wonder what you was so bloody worried about in the first place.
The main thing to remember is that you are not on your own. You could know so many people with anxiety also, and just never even realised it! There are support groups out there to give advice and show you better ways to deal with your anxiety. All you have to do is reach out and ask for that help. Speak to your GP, and see if they can offer you medication for your anxiety. There is a medication out there that will help everybody, you just have to find the right one for you. Medication can help to relieve some of the symptoms, and if you stick with it and take it regularly, it can make such a dramatic difference! What have you got to lose?
Keep in contact with your friends and family, don’t let your anxiety get in the way of that. Create a planner or remind yourself to talk to a loved one at least once a day; even if it’s just a phone call or a text. It stops you from isolating yourself and will help to relieve your worries a little as they should naturally bring you comfort.
Don’t suffer alone! If you’re having a particularly bad time, and your anxiety is sky high and really getting you down, then tell someone! Let those close to you know how you are feeling and open up a little, as it can help them to understand what you are going through and offer their patience and support. If you feel you don’t have anyone to talk to, then remember that there are always helplines available out there. I also have my Advice Corner, don’t forget!
