    One Year Later: Trump's Impact on U.S. Political and Economic Order Jan 19, 2018

    Congress has just hours to act to avert a government shutdown as intense negotiations over the future of undocumented youth, the CHIP health program, and government spending appear to hit a wall. Tom Prigg, a Democrat running for the U.S. Congress in Pennsylvania’s 12th District, joins the show.
    Congressional Republicans are demanding the release of a memorandum they allege contains explosive information about surveillance directed at the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.     Will Trump Shutdown the Govt or Provide Relief to Immigrant "Dreamers"? Jan 18, 2018

    On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Brent Wilkes, the national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
    The government is heading directly for a shutdown as Senate Republicans admit that they do not have the votes to extend federal funding, even for the short term. Meanwhile, President Trump tweeted today that the Children’s Health Insurance Plan should not be part of a Continuing Resolution, but instead should be part of a long-term solution, along with his border wall.
    Secretary of State Rex Tillerson backpedaled yesterday on US plans for Syria’s border with Turkey, saying that the US would not arm a Kurdish border force and adding that the US owes Turkey an explanation. Tillerson said further that the US plans to maintain a military force inside Syria even after ISIS is defeated. Ambassador Peter Ford, the former United Kingdom ambassador to Syria, joins the show.
    President Trump is set to address by satellite Friday’s March for Life, the annual anti-choice gathering that is gaining new ground under the Trump Administration. Brian and John speak with Karina Garcia, a reproductive justice organizer.
    Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Mick Mulvaney has requested no funding for the next quarter, stating that the reserve fund has $177.1 million, plenty to fund the agency, which expects $145 million in costs—essentially defunding the reserve. This is after his announcement on Tuesday that the agency will delay and revisit regulations on payday lending, a predatory system long understood to target the poor. Jim Kavanagh, the editor of ThePolemicist.net, joins the show.
    A little more than a year after then-President-elect Trump stood before cheering workers at a Carrier manufacturing plant in Indiana and promised to keep their Rust Belt jobs from moving to China, those same workers are feeling betrayed, as more than 1,500 were laid off, the final 200 just this week. Pete Dolack, an activist and writer with Trade Justice New York Metro joins Brian and John.
    Members of the Catalonian parliament elected a separatist as Speaker yesterday in their first meeting since the central government in Madrid dissolved the region’s parliament. Dick Nichols, the correspondent for Spain and Catalonia for Green Left Weekly, joins the show.
    More than 120 prisoners took control of a French prison outside Paris in response to a demonstration by hundreds of prison guards a day earlier, during which the guards burned tires and wooden pallets in protest about various grievances.     Spy Against Spy: US Claims CIA Agent Exposed Its Operations in China Jan 17, 2018
    Show notes

    On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Coleen Rowley, a former FBI special agent who in 2002 was named Time Magazine person of the year along with two other whistleblowers, joins the show.
    A former C.I.A. officer suspected by investigators of helping China dismantle United States spying operations and identify informants has been arrested. The reported collapse of the US spy network in China is described by the New York Times as one of the American government’s worst intelligence failures in recent years.
    A newly drafted United States nuclear strategy that has been sent to President Trump for approval will permit an expanded use of nuclear weapons. This document is called the Nuclear Posture Review. The following is a 30-minute except interview on the issue of nuclear weapons. The program was recorded one week ago in the studio of Radio Sputnik. Brian and John speak with Greg Mello, the executive director of the Los Alamos Study Group, and Kevin Kamps, the Radioactive Waste Watchdog at the organization Beyond Nuclear.
    House Republicans are proposing another stopgap spending measure that would ignore Democratic concerns over DACA, but would fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, for the next six years. They look at whether the Democrats will be forced to choose children over immigrants to get a budget deal. Dr. Scott Tyson, the CEO of Pediatrics South and an advocate for the right to healthcare, joins the show.
    For 16 years, fighting in Afghanistan between US troops and the Taliban has stopped when winter descends. Under the new rules of engagement for the third US president to administer the Afghanistan war, the US and Afghan forces conducted an average of 15 airstrikes a day this December, compared with an average of 2 last December. Ann Wright, a retired United States Army colonel and former U.S. State Department official in Afghanistan, who resigned in protest of the invasion of Iraq, join Brian and John.
    The value of the dollar is down more than 15 percent versus the euro in the past six months, making exports cheaper and imports more expensive. It also could fuel inflation and prolong the stock market rally. But is this a bubble, and are the Trump Administration’s policies just kicking the can down the road? Daniel Sankey, a financial policy analyst, and Steve Keen, the author of “Debunking Economics” and the world’s first crowdfunded economist, join the show.
    Momentum is building for the outdoor Virginia Prison Reform Rally to be held from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Bell Tower on Capitol Square in Richmond, Virgnia. Margaret Breslau, Chairperson of the Coalition for Justice, joins Brian and John.
    On the same day that he refused to answer questions before the House Intelligence Committee, former White House senior advisor Steve Bannon was subpoenaed to testify before special counsel Robert Mueller’s grand jury. He has now reportedly agreed to an interview with Mueller rather than testify. They look at whether Bannon is a witness or a target.     A DACA deal appears to be dead in light of President Trump’s recent racist comments. But he blames Democrats, whom, he says, are willing to shut down the government if there’s no DACA deal.
    A group of Foreign Ministers, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, meets in Vancouver this week to discuss implementation and enforcement of sanctions on North Korea. Alison Bodine, an anti-war and social justice activist and the Chair of Vancouver's antiwar coalition Mobilization Against War and Occupation, and Walter Smolarek, Sputnik news analyst, join the show.
    The government of Turkey is planning what it is calling an “imminent” military operation against US-backed Syria Kurdish fighters in the northern Syrian city of Afrin. With 2,000 US special forces on the ground, the US could find itself in armed conflict.     Big Brother America: Secret Police Given Free Reign by House Vote Jan 11, 2018

    The House of Representatives is set to vote on a provision that would reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act while President Donald Trump appeared to torpedo his Administration’s own position on the act. Meanwhile, Democrats will go it alone on their Russia investigation, as Republicans in Congress are reluctant to chase the Russian boogeyman.
    The Trump Administration said today that it would allow states to impose work requirements on people in the Medicaid program. Mary Gerisch, an organizer and member chair of the Rights & Democracy health care justice team, joins the show.
    President Trump waived part of the fines for five banks charged with fraudulent conduct, including Deutsche Bank, where he has at least $130 million of debt. Brian and John speak with Jack Rasmus, author and professor of economics.
    The issue of war and peace is the issue of the day in Colombia. Will the ceasefire and peace process continue or is it being derailed? Mario Murillo, author and professor of Communication and Latin American studies at Hofstra University, joins the show.

    Justice Department Demands Sputnik Register as Foreign Agent Jan 10, 2018

    A US District Court judge in San Francisco has blocked President Trump’s plan to phase out Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, because of the President’s tweet supporting the program. It’s Trump versus Trump on DACA. Angie Kim, an immigrant rights advocate and community organizer with the MinKwon Center for Community Action, joins the show.
    Former presidential advisor Steve Bannon has stepped down--or has been forced out--as the executive chairman of Breitbart News, as the fallout continues from his sharp attacks on President Trump and his family in a recent book. Brian and John speak with Dave Lindorff, an investigative reporter, a columnist for CounterPunch, and a contributor to several other news outlets.
    At least 15 people have been killed in the exclusive southern California enclave of Montecito after mudslides, triggered by heavy rains following the worst forest fires in the state’s history, which destroyed houses and roads.     President Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen filed a federal lawsuit yesterday against the news organization Buzzfeed and Fusion GPS over the allegations contained in the Steele dossier. Kevin Zeese, the co-coordinator of Popular Resistance, joins Brian and John.
    Bruce Gagnon and 11 other protesters were arrested a year ago for blocking the main street leading to the Bath Iron Works shipyard to protest the christening of a US Navy Destroyer.     Revealed: FBI Infiltrated Trump Presidential Campaign Jan 09, 2018

    Senator Dianne Feinstein has released the Senate Committee testimony of Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson against the wishes of Chuck Grassley, the chair of the committee, in the latest twist to the “Russiagate” saga.
    Tenants in Maryland are suing that a property management firm controlled by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner’s real estate company and an Israeli Corporate entity provided $30 million to Kushner’s properties before Trump sent Kushner to Israel and the Middle East and before Trump announced that the US was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Matt Hill, an attorney representing aggrieved tenants in a class action suit brought against Kushner and his companies, joins the show.
    North Korea announced yesterday that it would send a team of athletes to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, while South Korea confirmed the first high-level talks between the two countries in more than two years. Brian and John speak with Professor Simone Chun, a fellow at the Korea Policy Institute and a member of the Korean Peace Network.
    After ignoring a court order about racial profiling, being convicted of contempt of court, and being pardoned by President Trump, America’s former “toughest sheriff” Joe Arpaio threw his hat in the ring today for an Arizona senate seat. Juan José Gutiérrez, the executive director of the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, joins the show.
    The Trump Administration is likely to re-impose sanctions on Iran this week, even though it would hurt U.S. manufacturers doing business with the country. Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Non-Violence, joins Brian and John.
    The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission this week unanimously rejected a proposal by Energy Secretary Rick Perry that would have propped up nuclear and coal power plants struggling in competitive electricity markets.     National Security Agency head Admiral Mike Rogers will retire this spring, according to a classified memo that was leaked to the press. It’s a fitting end to Rogers’s four-year tenure. We talk about the rise of the National Surveillance state and the US government’s war against whistleblowers. Kirk Wiebe, a former NSA senior analyst and renowned national security whistleblower, joins the show.
    The Trump Administration announced today that it will expel as many as 260,000 El Salvadorans who were granted temporary status in the United States after a devastating 2001 earthquake in their country. Brian and John speak with Heather Benno, managing attorney at Esperanza Center.

    Israel yesterday published a list of 20 international groups that now will be banned from the country for their support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. Dan Cohen, a journalist and filmmaker, joins Brian and John.
    Recy Taylor just died at the age of 97. Ms. Taylor was gang raped in 1944 in Abbeville, Alabama, by six white men, who were all subsequently acquitted. It was a case that Rosa Parks investigated, many years before she rose to prominence in the civil rights movement. Jaimee Swift, a PhD candidate at Howard University, joins the show.

    The New York Times is reporting that President Trump enlisted his attorney to demand that Attorney General Sessions not recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Is this obstruction of justice or a meaningless detail seized upon by the media?
    Pakistan today expressed “deep disappointment” today after President Trump announced a cutoff in security aid to the country. Marvin Weinbaum, Scholar-in-Residence for the Middle East Institute’s Center for Pakistan Studies, joins the show.
    For the third year in a row, American police officers killed more than 1,000 people, even as the rates of violent crimes continue their historic declines. Brian and John speak with Abraham Marquez, a community organizer and activist.
    Spain’s Supreme Court has refused to release Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras, who has been in prison for two months because of his role in the region’s push for independence.
