Dear Listeners,
This is Rebecca writing the episode notes and I feel completely inept at writing Dune filled puns. That is what Maddie Daddie is for. Instead I'm just going to thank you from the depths of our souls for listening to our episode about Dune. Maddie has loved this movie from the beginning of our friendship and it has brought her so much comfort through the past few years. I always felt like Dune was Star Wars for A24 boys all grown up and I am not wrong. But it's also for Maddie. And you. If you want that. It still baffles me that I watched that whole damn movie and didn't pick up on anything that she explains to me in the first half of the episode.
With all that said I think this episode will make you feel less alone and very giggly and I think you'll have a very fun time.
Thanks for listening! Love you :)

This year we accidentally made a very good choice of what to cover for our holiday episode. It began with wanting to discuss A Muppets Christmas Carol which then evolved into wanting to discuss the other adaptations and retellings of the Christmas classic which then led to a Dickensian feat. It’s going to include Madelaine Turner’s EXCELLENT research on Charles Dicken’s life and Rebecca’s subpar knowledge on the topic after watching The Man Who Invented Christmas (an eventual BBC classic). We also watched and will be discussing Ghosts of Girlfriends Past as *gasp* maybe the best adaptation of them all???t) We also watched A Barbie Christmas Carol, It’s A Wonderful Life, A Holly Dolly Christmas, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged, to prep for the episode. That’s a lot. We are experts. God bless us, everyone!

It's been a while since we've done one of these but this week we're bringing you a Topical Episode on Comparison. We approach it from some different angles and were honestly a little surprised how many ways you can discuss it. Madelaine Turner discussing the comparison she gets with Wes Anderson and Rebecca discusses what it's like working in a bridal shop and surrounded being surrounded by mirrors 24/7. Maddie talks about the Beyonce Concert, Rebecca was called vanilla by a boy at a bar the other night, and we even talk about how we're compared to one another. This is one of our most vulnerable episodes to date and we really appreciate you listening.

Y'all. This almost killed us. We possibly ACOTAR-ed too hard and tried to consume too much smut in too short of a timespan which made us lose our minds. We may have read the term 'mate' used too many times in one week. Or there was just way too much war and not enough smut. All that matters is that this week we learned more about ourselves and we're dragging you down to the bottom of the library with us. We will be covering the third book, took the ACOTAR personality quiz to find out which character we are, and saur much more.

Are you ready for The Most Beautiful Episode You've Ever Heard? By The Cauldron, we hope so.
This week The Lonely Girls are flying head-first into a world of sexy faeries, seductive smirks, cursed castles, and more lore than either of them were truly prepared for. Recapping the first two novels of Sarah J. Maas's fantasy series, A Court Of Thorns And Roses (known colloquially as ACOTAR), Rebecca and Madelaine get into the nitty gritty of these best-selling books and ask themselves the important questions. Did we see the twist from a mile away? How many Ex Machinas will we accept in a row? Why does Rebecca hate a protagonist that paints? and Are we just a bunch of sluts? Listen and find out. Hope you enjoy!

This week we're talking about the 2003 cult classic film, Uptown Girls. This movie was marketed as a rom-com giggly sleepover romp and then ended up being a very delicate and beautiful film about healing our inner child. It is (arguably) one of the best Brittany Murphy performances and maybe THE best performance from a child actor ever. Ever. The movie was initially panned because it never found its exact audience but was held in the public consciousness because of Sarah Edward's costuming. The whimsical and girl-forward styling and art direction of the film has kept it as a very "online" and led it to be rediscovered in the 2020s.
During this episode Madelaine and Rebecca refer to this AMAZING video multiple times:
Uptown Girls is an Underrated Masterpiece on Healing Your Inner Child by Film Girls Studies.
The Forgotten Legacy of Brittany Murphy by Yhara zayd.

You asked for it (no one asked for it) and we delivered. This week we are talking about Louis Sachar's film and Newberry Medal winning book, Holes. It is a coming of age story about a boy sent away to a juvenile correction camp where he unearths (hell yeah) secrets and breaks family curses. It truly presents as a beautiful children's novel but one foot deeper is an elegant investigation into the prison system and generational trauma... Dig in.
This episode was edited by Darcy Brown! We love you Darcy.

Christmas Surprise. Back in November 2022 Madelaine and Rebecca were together to watch Bivi play Clara in The Nutcracker and they continued to watch the Twilight series. We truly love talking about these movies so much because they are EXCELLENT pieces of cinema. In this episode we discuss where the hell we've been, rolling down hills, the morality of becoming werewolves, and Howard Shore's score that was honestly too good for these movies. Thank you to Erica Kremer and Mary (hail Mary) for experiencing these films with us.

Being iconically nostalgic is what brings us together today. This current season has been a love letter to Madelaine's mom and this film has particular significance for both of them. In this episode we talk about being lonely girls at concerts (Rebecca discusses going to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour and Madelaine tells the story of her 24 hour whirlwind in NYC). To prep for this episode Rebecca did so much research that she may have made herself physically sick and she HIGHLY suggests you do the same. Below we're linking what we hyper fixated on to bring you this.
The Princess Bride Audiobook (abridged) read by Rob Reiner
As You Wish by Cary Elwes (HIGHLY suggest listening to the audiobook)
And then obviously the book and then the movie. We barely need to link these above.

The Lonely Girls been talking about doing a Miyazaki episode since the inception of the podcast. Madelaine already knew too much about the filmmaker and Rebecca (being Rebecca) never thought that they would have enough time to properly research and give y'all an episode worthy of the topic. But then we became Season 2 Rebecca and Madelaine and thus transformed into much more ambitious ladies.
This episode we are discussing the Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli. Their cannon of films mean so much to lonely girls and have some of the best representation of the archetype on screen. We discuss each of the films (a handful of them we do say, "I didn't watch that one", but not many), look at them through the The Lonely Girls Lens and and *cough* film maker's lens.
We also discuss Miyazaki, why his name is so synonymous with the studio, and how his childhood went on to impact his most famous work. One word hint. Planes.

We're back babyyyyyyyy! Did you see that coming? Absolutely no you did not. Because we didn't tell anyone.
We're kicking off Season 2 by returning to our our childhood book shelves and pulling out the first three books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This week we're going to (trigger warning) Canada and more specifically to Prince Edward Island. Anne has been one of the most suggested topics and we refused to do it until we wanted to. Which is now.
We discuss our connection to the books, the life of the author, and (famously) the loneliest characters in the lonely girl cannon.

We missed y'all! We know that December can be a weird time and we ourselves have been reaching for comfort media for help and thought you may be as well. A Christmas Surprise if you will (a phrase Rebecca coined during the 2022 December TN trip) and chose Love, Actually not just because we love it but also because it's absolutely covered in lonely girls. This 2003 holiday rom-com is one of the best loved and most Popular Media Think Piece as late November comes around. We've read the lists on why we love it, why we shouldn't love it, and why we do love it even though we shouldn't. The writer and director Richard Curtis does the interview circuits every holiday season to agree with the interviewers that his film is problematic and admit that he still doesn't know, actually, why we love it so much. There is so much to discuss so please slip on your coziest jumper and pour yourself the biggest cup of milky tea and join in.
Thank you always and forever for listening and happiest holidays to you all.
You are perfect,
Madelaine & Rebecca

Hey there lovers,
So this episode we've got a little bit of everything. We've got Fall. We've got a rom-com. And we have some important news. This is our Season One finale. We've absolutely been thrilled with how it's gone and are so excited to return soon with more episodes. But it's a big job. So we wanted to come in strong with what is arguably the greatest rom-com of all time. Rob Reiner and Norah Ephron's masterpiece. When Harry Met Sally. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan dazzle us while answering the question that haunts all of us, "Can men and women just be friends?" We dive into who the lonely girls of this film are, enneagrams (because why not?), Norah Ephron's life, and *mutters* thefilmmakerslense. It's a real banger of an episode and be sure to send it to all of the love's of your lives.

Reader, we read it.
This week we're taking on one of the most adapted, beloved, and read by AP English highs school students works ever. We're talking about Jane Eyre. You know her and you may love her. We decided to take on this sulky teen initially to use her as the pinnacle example of a new term we're going to call The Shy Girl. We thought Charlotte Brontë's most famous heroine would be the PERFECT example of The Shy Girl and because of Madelaine Turner's expertise on the adaptations of this classic we would be golden. However. As Madelaine and Rebecca began to re-examine the text they started to form a new theory *gasp* We also give a lot of thought on Bertha Mason because she represents so many women at that time and they deserve to be discussed. So listen along as this literary classic takes them (for better or worse) down memory lane.
Some of the sources we discussed:

Hello listeners,
This week we're slipping on our favorite pair of Manolos and sitting down to dish out the hottest gossip with our favorite lonely gals over a cosmos. That's right, We're joining Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte for Season One of Sex and the City. This show has been adored by different generations of women since its initial release and we actually haven't ever watched it all the way through. Madelaine got to Season Three and after Rebecca called her crying last week they decided they should watch it together. In this episode we're going to discuss the loneliest moments of each of the characters and how we would apply to them the lonely girl lens. We also inescapably discuss the Big and Carrie relationship. We tried to avoid it but it's apparently inescapable. Grab your baguette and let's hit the town Lonely Girls.

Welcome, welcome to our first annual episode of The Hunger Games. This past week we both watched our favorite Australians Reaction to Mockingjay (Mike's Mic) and we were like, "Wait naur bestie why are we not doing HangGaymes?" We love nostalgia and to reexamine the past pieces of the media of our childhood and the chokehold this messed up bloody, bloody tale definitely was an obsession of our generation. We're going to be discussing Rebecca's ideas for who should play Haymitch next, what district we come be from, would we survive The Games and Madelaine's ridiculous screw-ball comedy style first date from a few weeks ago.

We just want to thank you all for joining us today. Today we are talking about the celebration we all know and love. And love to know. And love to love. Weddings are one of the universal celebrations that are fascinating in both their similarities and differences and we are going to discuss all of it. Both Madelaine Turner and Rebecca Botter have recently been in attendance so we thought it would be the perfect time to discuss. We talk about the loneliest girls at weddings, what we say 'I Do' and 'I Object To', and everything else under the white chiffon curtains.

Hey there Keekeekins,
Welcome to an episode that we have truly been teasing for a while. This week we're discussing The Lost Boy, As this podcast series continues we will steadily be adding to our vocabulary and this is officially the second entry. And what could be more perfect than the 2001 rom-com sleeper that truly no one remembers besides us? But trust us on this one. In America's Sweethearts we truly have a stacked cast (Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones (so hot) and Billy Crystal) that are truly acting their faces off in this lighthearted screwball comedy. Also, this episode comes from the vaults of recordings from Madelaine Turner's stay with Rebecca in Atlanta. So if they seem particularly happy and buzzy please do not take notice. Love y'all

Dearest Listeners, we are (sadly) bringing our Jane Austen coverage to a close this week but we PROMISE we are making the most of it. This week Madelaine recounts an almost lg moment at the Hollywood Bowl, Rebecca outs a Mr. Elton from a certain app, and we go through the Jane Austen cannon and rank each of her heroines from least to most lonely. We then accidentally are able to go through the books and quite speedily are able to sort them all in to lonely girl categories and we are done with our beloved Jane (for now...)
Don't forget to follow us at @lonelygirlspodcast on the socials and be sure to leave us only five stars.

Dearest Listeners, we are BACK bitches and we promise that it was worth the wait. This week we are looking at one of the most important Lonely Girl influences of all time, Jane Austen. Because Austen is so important to us we are taking our time with her for the next two weeks. This week we will be discussing her personal life and next week we will be looking more specifically at her different works. During this episode we will be discussing her through the lens of the lonely girl and whether or not we think she was one herself. This episode is great for Jane-ites and those who half watched an adaptation five years ago. Her life alone is worth discussing and we do hope you will join us.
ALSO, if you want to read or listen to the book that Rebecca got most of her information from go and check out Lucy Worsley's biography, Jane Austen at Home. Rebecca listened to it (as usual) but maybe buy a used copy to support small businesses!

Did the newest adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion leave us in agony or hope? The release of the 2022 Persuasion has set the Lonely Girls of the world abuzz and so we stayed up past our bedtime to watch the movie and then immediately record an episode. This isn't your regular Janeite rant. Rebecca was very adamant that it wouldn't turn in to that. So instead we talk about the other adaptations, what went wrong in this version, and what we actually enjoyed *gasp*. What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Idk.
We're attaching the two pieces of media below that Rebecca and Madelaine particularly liked.

Happy Sixth Episode to us! This topic is very important to lonely girls because we famously are very bad at them. That’s right. We’re talking about the anniversary that comes every year to possibly show us that no one loves us. Maddie and Rebecca have spent their last individual birthdays together and this week they’re covering this infamous topic.

Hello Darlings. This week we’re talking about Truman Capote and the novella/classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s the movie everyone is pretty sure they’ve seen and the poster everyone had on their wall. In the episode we discuss Capote’s life, who was the real Holly, the differences between the film and story, and some of the bts in the creation of the film. We also hear about Madeleine's journey to find a song with generic lyrics and what made Rebecca cry. Stay tuned 🌙 🏞

Don’t read to much into this… but this week we’re talking about the 2009 ensemble rom-com(edy?) He’s Just Not That Into You. In this episode we discuss the death toll of the rom-com, how it stands up in 2022, and who are the loneliest girls in this ensemble film. Rebecca and Madelaine may even improvise an entire musical! Who knows?? Pour a Gin(nifer) Tonic and join us critiquing the almost critique of the rom-com genre.

It’s time to party because this week we’re talking about all around good time Barbara Milicent Roberts. How DARE you think we would talk about anything else. The female-gaze-pink-tulle haze of Barbie movies began when Madelaine and Rebecca were the perfect age. At every sleepover, car ride, or babysitting gig there was sure to be a VHS with Barbie being a princess, fairy or fairy princess and we think that’s AWESOME. Listen in to learn about why it’s important for your children to play with dolls, what we can learn from a Barbie parable, and (obviously) if Barbie is a true Lonely Girl.

This week we’re taking a road trip in our 1963 Chevy StepSide C-10 pickup truck to a place we like to call Forks. This is one of our LA episodes that came from Rebecca’s trip to see Madelaine in the big city. We were fresh from watching Catherine Hardwicke’s magnum opus and you will hear Rebecca’s effusive reaction to watching her new favorite movie for the first time. In this episode we discuss why it had a particularly strong impact on horny lonely girls raised in purity culture, why children who had to raise their parents are more likely to date vampires, and obviously who we think are the biggest lonely girls in the first installment. So put on your favorite fabric covered headband. Bite your lip. And start heavy mouth breathing.
Did you like it? Good.

Welcome all you Lonely Girls- to the premiere episode of The Lonely Girls Podcast. Today, Madelaine Turner and Rebecca Botter will be discussing the Patron Saint of Lonely Girls, writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. Sexy, right? This author and playwright is most famous for her children's novels A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. After learning a bit about the life of our Patron Saint, we use these two works to establish and analyze what truly is a Lonely Girl (and what truly is not). Do lonely circumstances make a Lonely Girl? Does having a dead dad make you hotter and cooler? Will either of us be able to pronounce Frances Hodgson Burnett correctly even once? Are diamond mines a good investment? Listen along and find out.
