The Nets have plenty to accomplish in the absence of Kevin Durant. On Tuesday night Brooklyn was also without Kyrie Irving, which set the stage for the supporting cast to step up.

Unfortunately, it was a mixed bag of inconsistency and sloppy play that certainly provided all those 2021 vibes Nets fans do not want to see resurface.

The starting unit was ineffective but when the bench stepped up to pull the Nets close, Coach Vaughn seemed to hesitate in leaning into what was working. With a combined 32 points in the first and fourth quarters the Nets allowed a bad Spurs team to dictate tempo and hand them their third straight loss.

The Nets played their second game following the Kevin Durant injury and Ben Simmons was a later scratch from the lineup as well. It spelled problems for Brooklyn who lost their second game in a row, this time to the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder. Once again, Brooklyn had trouble scoring in the fourth quarter, mustering just 22 points and being outscored by 15 in that frame. It was a carryover issue from the Celtics game. Kyrie Irving struggled from the field, Joe Harris missed wide open threes and it was another loss for the Nets.

The Nets pulled out a huge win over the Miami Heat with an almost-buzzer-beater win by Royce O’Neale to take them over the top. Brooklyn falls flat behind Kevin Durant as Nets winning streak ends in Chicago Jan 05, 2023

All good things come to an end, and for the Brooklyn Nets, it was their 12-game winning streak on Wednesday night in Chicago. Kevin Durant maintained his MVP-level season with a 44-point performance but this game was reminiscent of last season where wins were an all-or-nothing prospect on KD's shoulders. Kyrie Irving provided some highlight moments but could not come through late to help the Nets over the hump.

While Seth Curry poured in six three-pointers, the rest of the supporting cast was a complete no-show, highlighted by a rare off night for Royce O'Neal, who returned from a one-game absence.

The Nets surrendered 69 first-half points, were late in rotations, and did little to deny entry passes into the paint. There are no alarm bells to sound but it was a good reminder that even the best teams can always improve and this loss should help motivate Brooklyn going forward.
