Buster Posey cemented his legacy as a Giants legend on the field, but his decision to take over baseball operations could ultimately add a very different chapter to his story in San Francisco.
Hunter Pence believes it could take three years before this truly becomes Posey's team, and a new report from The Athletic provides a fascinating look inside his transition from franchise icon to inexperienced executive. We discuss Posey's unconventional approach, including the Giants leaving 40-man roster spots open, his reliance on the people around him, and the organization's renewed commitment to building through the farm system with a heavy emphasis on pitching.
There are reasons for optimism after a well-received trade deadline and the emergence of Bryce Eldridge, but the expectations in San Francisco should remain enormous. The Giants continue to draw more than 36,000 fans per game, have significant financial resources, and one veteran agent believes they "should be the West Coast Yankees."
Plus, we explain why the remaining games could matter more than they appear. With a potential lockout complicating the offseason calendar, strong finishes from veterans could create additional trade opportunities whenever baseball's transaction market eventually reopens.
