BYU Football LEANS on Homegrown Defense—Will the Cougars’ BET on Continuity PAY OFF? | Jake Clifton Brings BYU Big 12 Production & Talent | BYU & TCU Square Off at Marriott Center Jan 14, 2026

Show notes

The BYU Cougars make a bold gamble by opting for continuity over seeking out transfer portal upgrades for their defensive line. Are Kalani Sitake and Kelly Poppinga’s bets on internal player development the competitive edge BYU needs, or a risky deviation from proven Big 12 strategies? Jake Hatch breaks down why the coaching staff is prioritizing returning talent like Keanu Tanuvasa, Justin Kirkland, Tausili Akana, Bodie Schoonover, Nusi Taumoepeau, Vai Fetuli and Anisi Purcell to anchor the trenches this season. With programs like Texas Tech investing millions up front, will BYU’s homegrown approach be enough to disrupt the conference hierarchy and put the Cougars in College Football Playoff conversations?

The episode also highlights BYU’s calculated moves in the linebacker corps, welcoming Kansas State transfer Jake Clifton. Clifton arrives with proven Big 12 experience and a reputation for positional versatility, but how does he fit into a deep room featuring standouts like Isaiah Glasker, Siale Esera, and incoming star Cade Uluave? Jake Hatch explores the implications of Clifton’s return from a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the potential rust factor, and how his addition creates one of the most intriguing position battles for BYU heading into the season. Will BYU’s targeted approach—eschewing the typical shotgun method of transfer recruitment for precise, cultural fits—pay off on the field?

On the hardwood, BYU basketball gears up for a crucial and late-night Big 12 showdown against TCU at the Marriott Center. Can the Cougars’ “big three” of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright outduel TCU’s imposing frontcourt of David Punch and Xavier Edmonds, or will TCU’s superior bench depth and relentless interior play test BYU’s rotation? Jake Hatch previews lineup strategies, key matchups, and the significance of this game as Kevin Young and BYU aim to run their conference record to a perfect 4-0 before a ranked clash with Texas Tech.

With insider analysis on roster philosophies, player roles, and upcoming challenges, this episode is essential for Cougar fans tracking BYU’s ambitious path in both football and basketball

BYU Cougars Land Top-Rated Linebacker Cade Uluave & Stack Offensive Line With Stout Transfers | Will They Dominate? | BYU Basketball Disrespected With Drop in National Polls Jan 13, 2026

Show notes

The BYU Cougars make a national statement by securing Cal transfer Cade Uluave, the number one-rated linebacker in the transfer portal, signaling a new era of defensive dominance in Provo. With Uluave joining a loaded linebacking corps that already boasts Isaiah Glasker and Siale Esera, BYU is set to field one of the most athletic and versatile defenses in the Big 12. Is this the core that finally positions BYU for a legitimate College Football Playoff run, and how will Kelly Poppinga’s cross-trained unit adjust to such a major influx of talent?

Jake Hatch delivers an in-depth analysis of BYU’s headline-grabbing transfer portal activity, spotlighting not only Uluave’s star power but the addition of three highly sought-after offensive linemen: Zak Yamauchi (Stanford), Jr Sia (Utah State), and Paki Finau (Washington). These linemen, known for their size, versatility, and multi-year eligibility remaining, address BYU’s glaring needs exposed by Texas Tech and promise to elevate the program’s physicality in the trenches. Jake Hatch examines how offensive line coach TJ Woods and coordinator Aaron Roderick are responding to last season’s shortcomings by adding high-upside talent and discusses the program’s strategic—and expensive—use of NIL to secure these commitments. Do these moves finally close the talent gap with Big 12 heavyweights and set up BYU for championship-caliber play?

Shifting to basketball, the episode tackles the bewildering drop in national rankings for BYU despite their 12-game win streak and a 15–1 record. Jake Hatch questions the logic behind the Associated Press poll & the voter's decision to slide the Cougars two spots, spotlighting comments from head coach Kevin Young on the seeming national bias against BYU. Insights include the impact of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright on the Cougars’ March Madness ceiling, the challenges ahead in Big 12 play, and why this team might be the most dangerous BYU squad yet. Is it time for Cougar fans to expect disrespect in the national polls, or will continued dominance force a narrative shift?

Don’t miss exclusive details on BYU’s transfer strategy, player development, and the fight for national respect across football and basketball.

ESSENTIAL: Filling BYU Football’s Top TRANSFER PORTAL Gaps | Kalani Sitake MUST Address These Spots | Walker Lyons Perfect Fit at Tight End | AJ Dybantsa Truly Unique Force for BYU Basketball Jan 12, 2026

Show notes

The BYU Cougars lock in top talent and set sights on game-changing additions in the transfer portal, sparking fresh optimism for the upcoming season. LJ Martin returns after a record-chasing campaign, while Walker Lyons steps in as a high-ceiling tight end, likened to Carsen Ryan for his dynamic blocking and pass-catching skill. With Chase Roberts’ departure and key veterans spread across the roster, questions loom: can BYU’s blend of homegrown stars and portal pickups provide enough depth to survive the Big 12 gauntlet? Jake Hatch lays out a definitive list of positions to target, highlighting urgent needs at backup running back, offensive line reinforcements, starting-caliber wide receiver, defensive tackle and cornerback, and special teams. Will Kalani Sitake’s development-oriented strategy continue to yield results without a heavy transfer overhaul?

Roster stability takes center stage, capped by Evan Johnson’s commitment to return, giving BYU a solid foundation heading into the offseason. The conversation examines how development-first recruiting has brought back-to-back double-digit win seasons, but also explores the pitfalls when the Cougars dip too deep into portal waters. Jake Hatch analyzes O-line candidates like Zach Yamauchi, Paki Finau, and Utah State transfer Jr Sia, stressing the importance of pushing incumbents to elevate the run game. Wide receiver depth behind Jojo Phillips and Parker Kingston remains a concern, as does cornerback depth despite strong starters like Tre Alexander and Evan Johnson. Special teams uncertainty—with Will Ferrin NFL-bound and Sam Vander Haar awaiting eligibility—underscores the need for reliable replacements.

The buzz gets even louder on the hardwood, with AJ Dybantsa rewriting the record books and drawing comparisons to BYU legends like Jimmer Fredette and Danny Ainge. Is BYU basketball witnessing a one-of-one talent with potential to reach the Final Four or contend for a national championship? With major Big 12 showdowns against TCU and Texas Tech looming, Jake Hatch suggests the Cougars could be on the cusp of a new era in Provo. Listeners get insider perspectives on how roster moves, coaching shifts, and breakout athletes may impact BYU’s football and basketball trajectories in the coming year—and raises the question: is Cougar Nation ready for what’s next?

BYU Wins at the Huntsman! Win Streak Continues vs. Utes | Evan Johnson Running it Back! | Transfer Portal Chatter | Zak Yamauchi Commits to BYU Football Jan 11, 2026

Show notes

The rivalry remains Blue. On today’s episode of Locked On Cougars, host Jake Hatch celebrates a massive night for BYU athletics, headlined by a thrilling 89-84 victory over the Utah Utes at the Huntsman Center. This wasn't just another win; it was a statement by Kevin Young’s squad and a historic milestone for the program.

The "Big 3" Take Over Salt Lake City

The atmosphere in Salt Lake City was electric, but BYU's "Big 3" proved to be too much for a feisty Utah team. We break down how AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright III took control of the game when it mattered most.

AJ Dybantsa's Dominance: The superstar freshman lived up to the hype, showing why he’s a projected top pick with elite shot-making in a hostile environment.

Richie Saunders' Heart: We discuss the "glue guy" energy and scoring punch Saunders provided, proving once again that he is the emotional heartbeat of this roster.

Rob Wright III's Poise: The point guard played beyond his years, navigating the Utes' pressure and facilitating a high-octane offense.

History Made: With this victory, BYU has matched their longest win streak in program history. We look at the significance of this momentum as the Cougars continue their march through the Big 12 schedule.

BYU Football: The "Clean Sweep" of Retention

While the basketball team was winning on the court, Kalani Sitake and the BYU football staff were winning on the recruiting trail—specifically, the "internal" recruiting trail.

Evan Johnson & Hunter Clegg Return: We dive into the huge news that cornerback Evan Johnson and defensive end Hunter Clegg have officially announced they will return for the 2026 season.

The Full House: Following the Isaiah Glasker news, the return of Johnson and Clegg completes a "clean sweep" of BYU's top-tier talent. We analyze how keeping this defensive core intact changes the outlook for the upcoming season.

Stability in the Lineup: For a program looking to take the next step in the Big 12, retaining elite edge rushing and lockdown corner talent is just as important as any portal addition. Sitake has ensured that the 2026 defense will be veteran-led and ready to compete from Day 1.

Why This Matters for BYU’s Momentum

We wrap up the show by looking at the "Big Picture." From the basketball court to the gridiron, BYU is proving they can retain talent and win big games. The culture Kevin Young and Kalani Sitake have built is paying dividends, and the "Blue Wave" is surging at the perfect time.

Show notes

The BYU Cougars secured their offensive engine for 2026 and beyond as LJ Martin, fresh off a 1,300-yard Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year campaign, announces his return for a crucial senior season—and Bear Bachmeier confirms he won’t enter the transfer portal. Could this veteran core finally power BYU to a conference title and College Football Playoff berth? Jake Hatch analyzes how BYU’s savvy NIL investments and culture have made the program “portal-proof,” allowing Kalani Sitake and the Cougars to retain elite talent while remaining strategic about new additions. Key discussion points include the calculated pursuit of wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive line depth, highlighted by the arrival of former Oregon four-star Kyler Kasper as a potentially game-changing target on offense.

The transfer portal brings both highs and lows—BYU fans get an inside look at unexpected moves as Leona Lefau, a Texas linebacker long predicted to join BYU, instead chooses Colorado in a last-minute twist. Meanwhile, Utah’s own Nuku Mafi surprises with a jump to Purdue, and Jake Hatch weighs the impact of massive NIL offers driving college football’s wild market. Despite losing some targets, BYU’s ability to retain nearly every priority contributor leaves the roster intact and ready to compete at the highest level. Hatch also highlights how reinvesting resources in existing players has paid major dividends for the Cougars and outlines the expectations for portal additions that fit BYU’s system without disrupting team chemistry.

On the basketball front, anticipation builds as BYU and Utah reignite their storied rivalry at the Huntsman Center. With the Cougars riding an 11-game win streak and ranked top ten nationally, can Alex Jensen’s rebuilding Utes defend home court, or will BYU’s trio of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright prove unstoppable? Fan intrigue grows amid drama over ticket restrictions for BYU fans and the promise of a packed arena. Jake Hatch previews the matchup, emphasizing the importance of not overlooking a rivalry opponent and the need for BYU to maintain focus and exploit their clear talent advantage.

Don’t miss this comprehensive breakdown of BYU’s offseason moves, transfer portal drama, and the battle for state basketball supremacy.

Show notes

Texas Tech surges to the top of Big 12 transfer portal rankings, poaching playmakers like Brennan Sorsby from Cincinnati and sparking debate over NIL and facilities advantages. Kalani Sitake BETS BIG With Kelly Poppinga | Will BYU’s Defense SURGE or Collapse? | Bear Bachmeier Affirms Commitment to BYU | BYU Basketball Roughs Up Arizona State Jan 08, 2026

Show notes

The BYU Cougars are surging with major program stability as Kelly Poppinga is promoted to defensive coordinator—can his background and tireless recruiting elevate BYU’s defense after a 23-4 makr over the past two football campaigns? Jake Hatch spotlights Poppinga’s transition, including how his Bronco Mendenhall coaching roots and attention to detail may infuse fresh energy and outside-the-box thinking to the Cougar defense. The episode explains how the continued presence of Gary Andersen provides crucial mentorship, supporting Poppinga’s first solo play-calling role and solidifying BYU’s defensive system. Sione Po'uha’s elevation to associate head coach signals growing trust in his leadership, while Demario Warren arrives as defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, bringing years of FCS head coaching expertise from Southern Utah and Boise State experience that can help strengthen BYU’s secondary.

Crucially, the podcast dissects the strategic importance of retaining star talent, headlined by Bear Bachmeier’s “run it back” commitment. Could BYU’s smart moves in the transfer portal—prioritizing holdover stars instead of big-name free agents—create an on-field advantage? With Bachmeier, LJ Martin, Keanu Tanuvasa, Tre Alexander, Parker Kingston, and others returning, BYU’s offense looks primed for another explosive year. Are College Football Playoff dreams suddenly realistic for Cougar Nation? Jake Hatch considers the market for quarterbacks with wild finances, tampering realities, and the culture Kalani Sitake has established to build a resilient, “portal-proof” program. The segment covers defensive improvements, impactful highlights, and tactical adjustments by coach Kevin Young, all hinting at a new level of consistency for the Cougars. The episode closes with a look ahead to the critical four-game stretch, the rivalry showdown with Utah, and the team’s growing confidence as both football and basketball surge toward championship ambitions.

Will Kelly Poppinga and Bear Bachmeier push BYU past the threshold into Big 12 glory? Don’t miss Jake Hatch’s expert breakdown and inside scoop on the Cougars’ most pivotal moves this season.
