Kalani Sitake’s BYU Cougars sit proudly at 6-0, holding down the No. 2 national ranking in the human AP Poll after physically beating No. 2 Notre Dame to a pulp. Yet, Bristol’s favorite spreadsheet nerds look at an unblemished, top-two juggernaut and relegate BYU to No. 14 in the FPI.
Why? Because ESPN’s proprietary algorithm is built from the ground up to protect corporate blue-bloods and shield pampered power programs from the brutal reality of actual trench warfare.
The FPI treats the entire Big 12 like a second-class afterthought. Texas Tech, Utah, and BYU are all sitting at 6-0, grinding through a weekly gauntlet where every single snap requires blood-and-guts execution. But instead of rewarding real grass, bruised ribs, and four-quarter line-of-scrimmage dominance, the Bristol computer spits out metrics that favor multi-loss SEC and Big Ten rosters simply based on preseason hype and suit-and-tie brand bias.
Computers don't measure the thin air at LaVell Edwards Stadium, a goal-line stand with the game on the line, or the pure, unyielding grit of a program that refuses to fold. ESPN’s analysts can cook up all the analytic disrespect they want, but the raw tape doesn't lie. BYU and the Big 12 didn't build undefeated records to validate a Bristol spreadsheet—they are out here breaking the national algorithm entirely.
