Worrying about Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting and why the transfer portal isn't the answer Jul 12, 2022

Show notes

Justin Julka joins the show to talk Wisconsin Badgers football 2023 recruiting, Paul Chryst and why the transfer portal isn't the answer.

We discuss the struggles of the 2023 recruiting class, the players that have come off the board and whats potentially left for the Badgers to reel in. We talk about QB recruiting and why its so important to land a target this cycle. We also discuss the current class rankings and where the Badgers fall.

We discuss the transfer portal and why Badger fans might have false security in it after last year's success in the portal. Why the transfer portal is a band-aid and not a cure. We also talk about how difficult it will be to land an impact transfer QB with the lack of passing success.

Finally on Locked On Badgers, Justin talks about Paul Chryst and if he agrees with my pros and cons of the Badgers head coach. He agrees that the conservative nature of Chryst holds the program and the offense back - we also discuss what would need to happen for Paul Chryst to find himself on the hot seat.

Reasons why Wisconsin Badgers football fans should be thankful for head coach Paul Chryst Jul 12, 2022

Show notes

Wisconsin Badgers football fans should be excited to have Paul Chryst as their head coach, I break down three reasons why he's excellent and underrated.

First, Chryst has elevated the recruiting profile in ways that previous coaches haven't been able to; this includes landing multiple five star players, Graham Mertz and a top-20 recruiting class at Wisconsin.

We dive into his ability to make great coaching hires and build an excellent staff. I also think he deserves a ton of credit for keeping Dave Aranda and promoting Jim Leonard -- its these moves that have helped the defense maintain its elite level.

Finally on Locked on Badgers we talk about maybe the most important part -- Paul Chryst never has bad teams. It may not always be sexy, but he's helped establish such a high floor at Wisconsin that going 8-5 seems like a disaster. Its easy to overlook, but Chryst has been excellent during his time in Madison.

Where does Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Paul Chryst need to get better ? Jul 08, 2022

Show notes

Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Paul Chryst has been really good, but there are some issues that will need to be addressed for Wisconsin to take the next step. We talk about those issues on today's Locked On Badgers.

In the first segment we discuss the issues with the Wisconsin passing game, and dive into QB recruiting, development and play calling. Why Paul Chryst has played a role in these issues and why I think the hiring of Bobby Engram might make a big difference in fixing it.

Next we talk through some game management issues and PC's inability at times to find a more aggressive approach to play calling. Why this hurts Wisconsin and why Wisconsin's defense should make it easier to be aggressive from a playcalling standpoint.

Finally we talk about PC's approach to playing bad teams and why it actually hurts the development and recruitment of Badgers quarterbacks.

Show notes

John Garcia Jr. joins the show to discuss the newest Wisconsin Badger football commits Christopher Terek and Jamel Howard. Christopher Terek was a surprise commit with most thinking he was leaning towards Michigan or Iowa. He's a big body that John thinks might need some time to develop but has a lot of upside.

Next we discuss Jamel Howard and why he's such an underrated player from a rankings standpoint. John points out that he's hurt a little bit in the recruiting world by his location and his frame, but we both agree he's a rock-solid addition to the Wisconsin class and the type of player every 3-4 defense needs. We also discuss his potential upside and why he's more than just a plugger.

Finally on Locked On Badgers we talk about Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin recruiting staff and where they stack up in the Big Ten hierarchy. Why the Badgers do such a solid job finding talent but where can they make incremental improvements?

How that would be different with today's college football landscape.

Jamel Howard commits to the Wisconsin Badgers football program, a very important addition. Jun 27, 2022

Show notes

Jamel Howard commits to the 2023 Wisconsin Badgers football team, I talk about why his commitment is so important. Specifically he fits a need that the roster doesn't have a lot of after Keanu Benton. Wisconsin thrives when they can control the running game and get opposing offense into passing situations, to do that you need big defensive lineman, Howard fits that role to a T.

Next I talk about the bevy of official visitors Wisconsin is still waiting on to make decisions. Why Lincoln Keinholz is so important to this class, why Joe Crocker is a grudge match for Wisconsin and MSU, why My'Keil Gardner is likely leaning a different direction and the importance of Tackett Curtis and Khalil Tate.

Finally on Locked On Badgers we talk about the Gus Yalden interview; we talk about why he's going to be a star for the Badgers and how is basketball IQ likely sets him apart.
