SXSW 2011: Bright Eyes Live In Concert Mar 21, 2011
    Show notes

On the new People's Key, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst is no longer a prodigiously gifted kid; he's become an adventurous, fully formed folk-rock icon. SXSW 2011: Felice Brothers Live In Concert Mar 21, 2011
    Show notes

The members of Felice Brothers know how to make a madly spirited, ramshackle racket onstage: That's how the Upstate New York band got its start. their mix of rock, country and folk has a freewheeling energy at its core: It accesses the spirit of Bruce Springsteen as frequently as it wallows in thoughtful, Bob Dylan-esque folk. Hear the band perform live as part of a SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas, on March 19, 2011.

SXSW 2011: Middle Brother Live In Concert Mar 21, 2011
    Show notes

A supergroup featuring the leaders of three largely likeminded bands — Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, Deer Tick's John McCauley and Delta Spirit's Matthew Vasquez — Middle Brother naturally takes on many incarnations: moodily brooding folk-pop, boozily spirited rock, spotlight-sharing roots music. Altogether, it adds up to roughly the sum of its parts. Hear the band perform live as part of a SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas, on March 19, 2011.

SXSW 2011: The Joy Formidable Live In Concert Mar 18, 2011
    Show notes

It's hard to imagine a band doing more with limited time than the Welsh-raised, London-based pop-rock trio The Joy Formidable. The group had to cut its set at NPR Music's daytime SXSW party in Austin, Texas, down to a lean four songs due to time constraints. But those spiky, bouncy songs absolutely slayed. Hear the band perform live at NPR Music's SXSW day party from The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2011.

SXSW 2011: WILD FLAG Live in Concert Mar 17, 2011
    Show notes

A new supergroup featuring Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney and NPR's Monitor Mix blog), Janet Weiss (of Sleater-Kinney and Quasi, among others), Mary Timony (of Helium) and Rebecca Cole (of The Minders), WILD FLAG hasn't even released its first single yet. Which means that virtually no one attending NPR Music's SXSW day party at The Parish in Austin, Texas, had heard a note of its rollicking, adventurous pop-rock before walking in the door. Hear the band perform live at NPR Music's SXSW day party from The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2011.

SXSW 2011: Khaira Arby Live In Concert Mar 17, 2011
    Show notes

One of the great living legends of Malian music, Khaira Arby is widely hailed as the queen of Malian desert soul, and with good reason. Shrouded in regal colors, she presides over a small army of brilliant African musicians, who create a hypnotic backdrop for her gloriously swooping vocals. It feels a little silly to think of her as a frontwoman — the mere lead singer of some band — but she's all showmanship and command on the live stage. Hear Khaira Arby and her band perform the gorgeous songs from her album Timbuktu Tarab live at NPR Music's SXSW day party from The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2011.

SXSW 2011: Colin Stetson Live In Concert Mar 17, 2011
    Show notes

Colin Stetson is coveted as a sideman for countless big names: The Montreal bass saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist is a touring member of Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre, and has performed guest work with Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, The National, David Byrne, Bon Iver and countless others. ?As a solo artist kicking off NPR Music's SXSW day party at The Parish in Austin, Texas, Stetson crafts vivid, enveloping, seemingly freeform soundscapes that sprawl and convulse. Hear Stetson perform live at NPR Music's SXSW day party from The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2011.
