Owning Our Gifts and Power with JJ Flizanes (Part 2) Jun 15, 2023

Show notes

In this follow up conversation with author and empowerment strategist JJ Flizanes, we continue our dialogue around living out our purpose and owning our power. JJ and I start by discussing a quote from author Marianne Williamson that she included in her book. The quote speaks to our deepest fears of being powerful beyond measure. Playing small puts ourselves and others at a disadvantage because when we shine, we give permission for others to do so as well. Being who you are is exactly who you need to be, and JJ touches on how this authenticity is essential for leadership.

Sometimes trauma impacts a person’s ability to live out their purpose. JJ and I discuss her perspectives on grieving, victim mentality, and lessons learned through life experiences. JJ believes those who have been impacted by hardships and trauma can use the wisdom they have gained to help others. She also touches on the power of forgiveness and keeping your heart open. JJ and I also talk about trying on different belief systems, the transformational power of changing your perspective, and how coaches and managers can “be on purpose.”

What’s Inside:

JJ’s views on forgiveness and how we choose our life lessons.
How changing your perspective can transform your life.
Tips for coaches and professionals on how to “be on purpose”.

Servant Leadership with Zachary Paul Hoffman Apr 06, 2023

Show notes

Zach Hoffman is an award-winning author, transformation coach, and founder of an organization called SWALeadership. My conversation with Zach dives into servant leadership and how his life experiences lead him to make that a focus. As an American football player in Europe, Zach was looked up to by many, especially youth. He realized that sports were his platform to reach people, not his purpose. Zach believes that if you want to earn the respect of others and have them feel you as a person, you have to make it about them, not you. We also talk about emotional intelligence and why it’s a key component of leadership. Being genuine and vulnerable goes a long way in terms of inspiring others and being a good mentor.

When Zach set out to write his book, he originally intended for his organization name to stand for Swiss Army Leadership, however he changed his mind while going through the publishing process. Due to copywriting issues, he was looking for another name that would fit both his core message and his journey as a former athlete. He then came up with Sensible Worldwide Adaptable Leadership. Zach learned that effective leadership requires you to embrace globalization and intercultural competence. Being able to adjust like a Swiss Army knife to your environment and an ever-changing world is critical for modern day leaders.

What’s Inside:

The importance of servant leadership and what it means.
Why street smarts and book smarts go hand in hand in effective leadership.
Why it’s important to get into the trenches with your clients as a coach.
How to deal with ageism in coaching and business.
The difference between real and fraudulent leadership.

Julie specializes in guiding people into a life they love through the development of high-performance habits in the areas of career, relationships, health, and finances. Julie and I discuss boundaries and why they’re so important in our personal and professional lives and Julie shares how her own journey shaped her path.

Julie grew up with a strict mother who often broke her spirit, both physically and emotionally. This created an energy of fear that made her doubt her worth and have poor boundaries with others. She had an awakening in her early thirties that made her realize she was living a life that wasn’t hers. Julie also realized that much of what she went through when she was younger was due to a lack of boundaries. Her faith is what ultimately pulled her through some tough life changes and helped her keep going down the path even when she couldn’t fully see it. Establishing strong boundaries is an ongoing journey in life, and Julie shares five ways to make sure your boundaries are bulletproof.

How Julie’s journey shaped who she is today.

A Devine Spark of Defiance - Part 2 Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

In Part One of this conversation with Joy Donnell, we went deep. Joy’s perspective truly helps people think beyond the surface level, which continues here in Part Two. In her book, “Beyond Brand”, Joy discusses changing narratives with the use of media. Here, she shares the moments that led to her getting to into media. Joy is dedicated to doing things differently while honoring her lineage. Questioning the origins of stories is a big theme within Joy’s book. After hitting a physical wall of burnout from overworking, Joy was forced to take a time out and question her own journey and purpose. She realized then that she wanted to live a creative life and tap into it as part of her self-care and healing.

When we begin with the end in mind, we can tap into what’s underneath so many of the stories and narratives we’re fed. If you’re a storyteller, it’s your job to uncover what’s beneath the surface. Self-compassion is the key when honoring your needs to rest and take care of yourself. Early in her career, Joy didn’t have the self-compassion she has today and didn’t honor her body and its needs. She shares her routines and how she makes sure it’s a number one priority.

What’s Inside:

How Joy decided to use media to make an impact.
Joy’s wake up call to honoring her purpose and creativity.

A Divine Spark of Defiance with Joy Donnell - Part 1 Feb 23, 2023

Show notes

Joy Donnell is a producer, writer, and co-founder of CIME, the Center for Intersectional Media and Entertainment. CIME provides research and resources for storytelling, equity, and Hollywood. Her recent book, “Beyond Brand”, dives into how to use media to live and leave our cultural legacy. Joy has spoken heavily on Hollywood production codes, an era which lasted about 30 years where Hollywood chose to inflict morality standards. These codes essentially taught human beings how to be and included things like suppressed sexuality and not showing race mixing. It was bewildering for Joy to discover, and we discussed how it affected her.

When Joy wrote her book, she wanted to talk about embodiment and disembodiment. At speaking engagements, people would always ask her how to build a brand while remaining authentic. Many people think their brand needs to mimic their authenticity, but it’s really the other way around. Focusing on your cultural legacy brings people back into their bodies, which is the only way you’re able to be human. Joy shares a transformational story from her childhood when she first discovered the dark history of racism in this country and the body she was born into. She felt a range of emotions, but also felt what she calls a divine spark of defiance that helped shape her career and worldview.

Joy has a lot more to share, so don’t forget to check out Part 2 of this episode.

What’s Inside:

Hollywood's production codes and how they shaped an era of global entertainment.
Why focusing on your legacy helps you embrace your authenticity.
How Joy surrenders to the body and honors the power of rest.
