What if wishing wasn’t just about birthday candles, shooting stars, or hoping something magically happens? What if there was actually science behind the way we wish and a way to make our wishes more powerful?
In this episode of Light Up Your Life, Samantha Peters sits down with Brownell Landrum, TEDx speaker, author of The Art and Science of Wishing, host of the Cosmic Wishes Show, and founder of The Cosmic Wish Experiment, a global grassroots effort centered around collective wishing.
Brownell shares how a late-night lecture on neuroplasticity sparked her curiosity about the science behind wishing and ultimately led her to research the work of more than 90 scientists. Together, Samantha and Brownell explore how wishing sits somewhere between a goal and a prayer, combining intention and personal action with an openness to possibilities outside of our control.
They dive into neuroscience, subconscious programming, visualization, repetition, ritual, and the reticular activating system, exploring how what we repeatedly focus on can train our brains to recognize people, ideas, and opportunities connected to what we desire.
They also discuss where wishing overlaps with manifestation—and where it differs. Brownell challenges the idea that if you don't receive exactly what you asked for, you've somehow failed. Instead, she introduces four possible responses to a wish: yes, no, not yet, or something better—and explains how a “no” can sometimes become an invitation to make an expansive pivot toward an outcome you never considered.
The conversation also explores subconscious resistance, worthiness, the power of language, the default mode network and creative problem solving, and why over visualizing an outcome can sometimes work against us.
Brownell leaves listeners with her three P's for more intentional wishing: peaceful, positive, and purposeful and a reminder that our most powerful wishes aren't necessarily about what we want, but about what holds deeper meaning and purpose in our lives.
In This Episode, You'll Discover:
• How wishing differs from goals, prayer, and manifestation
• The neuroscience behind repetition and focused intention
• How the reticular activating system influences what you notice
• Why rituals can make wishes more meaningful and memorable
• How subconscious beliefs can support or sabotage what you're working toward
• Why your best ideas may appear in the shower, on a walk, or during exercise
• The role of action in turning wishes into reality
• Why “no” isn't necessarily an ending, it's information
• What Brownell calls the expansive pivot
• Why toxic positivity can become problematic in manifestation
• Brownell's three P's: peaceful, positive, and purposeful
• How collective wishing could help create positive change in the world
Memorable Moments
“A wish is somewhere beautifully in between.”
“No isn't necessarily an ending, it's just information.”
“The more we can bring back these collective wishing rituals, the more we can change the world together.”
If you've ever wondered whether there's more to wishing, manifestation, visualization, and intention than simply thinking positively, this conversation will give you a completely different perspective on what it means to make a wish and what you can do after you make one.
