5: The Most Progressive Ramp Builder Ever with Nate Wessel Jul 11, 2018
    Show notes

Leading by example is the only way to truly lead.

This is something that's easy to forget when we're in the trenches of building our brands and businesses. We might take a back seat, and try to give directives from afar.

But when we do this, our coworkers can sense it. The result of this is that they don't take the tasks seriously. Why would they?

That's why on today's episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by pro BMX rider Nate Wessel to discuss his multi-pronged career. Nate is often described as "the most progressive ramp builder in the world," and today we sit down to talk about his newest project—designing and and building Camp Woodward here in Park, Utah.

Tune in to this conversation to hear Nate share his war stories from other projects like Bikes Over Baghdad. Fun fact: Nate was the first guy I called when we had the opportunity to take BMX to the troops in Iraq.

    Points to Keep In Mind
    • Seek out opportunities that allow you to positively influence your country
    • The higher the ranking, the more clearance you get overseas
    • Forge unconventional paths on the way to success
    • Pick up tasks and skills here and there to build a strong foundation
    • Lead by example to encourage your coworkers to follow your lead
    • Approach life with a humility. You can learn anything from anyone

4: Making The Most of What We Have with Travis Haley Jul 04, 2018
    Show notes

Planning for the future doesn't necessarily mean a better future.

Whether it's writing out notes before a meeting or detailing an itinerary before a trip, our tendency to try to plan the future is often a futile effort. The reasons for this are twofold: we run into obstacles that shift what we thought would happen and over preparation can take us out of the moment.

That's why on today's episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by veteran Force Reconnaissance Marine, Travis Haley, to discuss his resourcefulness. Travis has served combat tours in Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, and in this conversation, we dive deep into how he is able to stay present in such high-pressure moments.

Tune in to this conversation to learn more about Travis' story and how to apply his models and frameworks into your day-to-day life.

    Points to Keep In Mind
    • Weigh your savior complex against what you can realistically do to help others
    • Find the 20% to focus on that will give you 80% of the results
    • A mercenary is someone serving primarily for monetary gain
    • Learn to be resourceful to prepare yourself for times that call for improvisation
    • Enable deliberate practice into your training regimen
    • Argue the science to bypass others' cognitive dissonance
    • Start your day with aerobic exercise like table tennis and racquetball to induce neurotrophin growth in your brain
    • While psychopharmaceuticals may work, there may be neural atrophy
    • Keep priorities in check in high-pressure situations by having models to fall back on
    • Clear the fear from the situation to more clearly evaluate what to do
    • Turn your negative energy into physical activity

3: How To Lead By Following with Lonnie Mayne Jun 27, 2018
Show notes "Leadership is getting people to believe in something they can't see." - Lonnie Mayne

A leader must know how to follow.

While this might sound counterintuitive, it is the secret to success. When the person at the top entrusts those below him/her to make the right decisions, the collective whole feels empowered to do their best work.

But many companies today don't follow this recipe. They infuse fear into the company culture as a cheap way to make people do their work. While the tasks may be getting accomplished, this compression actually stunts innovation.

On today's episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by Lonnie Mayne. Lonnie is the CEO of Red Shoes Living, a team of leaders who has helped businesses grow 817% over the last few years by creating a culture focused on making a positive impact in the world. As an internationally recognized speaker, Lonnie shares his expertise on standing out in the way you live, the way you interact with people, and your overall contribution in the world.

Tune in to this conversation to hear the key components of his philosophy, the most frequent mistakes he comes across, and what it was like having Andre The Giant come over for dinner as a young child.

"I will learn as much from somebody I'm working with as they will potentially learn from me." - Lonnie Mayne Points to Keep In Mind
    • It is impossible to effectively lead inside a fear-based organization
    • Business is more about the product than the revenue growth
    • Treat everybody who has more than you as equals, and those who have less than you as kings and queens
    • Common misconceptions are: you don't have to be cutthroat to make money and being a softie doesn't mean you will get trampled
    • Integrate the CEO into the meetings to help build company morale
    • Get outside the four walls of an office to provoke more creative thinking
    • Don't get lost in the noise of KPIs and other data
    • Studies show that with increased friendliness comes increased customer satisfaction
    • A leader must also know how to follow
    • Being inclusive to diversity and different demographics is the secret to success
    • Be aware that your customer is a human being first, and a customer second
    • Put your phone away in conversation to completely listen to the conversation

2: Using Fear to Fuel Critical Thinking with Julian Carr Jun 27, 2018
Show notes "I meditate to the point where I stop thinking." - Julian Carr

Our fears can take control of us.

Just when we think we're capable of handling anything that comes our way, a bubbling anxiety will grab the steering wheel of our mainframe and send the inner monologue into a spiral.

But that's because we don't make an effort to shift the focus. That fear snowballing can be shifted and shaped by driving it into the places of critical thought. This type of mindfulness is easier said than done.

That's why on today's episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by Julian Carr. Julian is a pro skier, the CEO and Founder of Discrete Clothing, and recently launched the Cirque Trailrunning Series. Tune in to this discussion to learn how he focuses his energy, stays productive and healthy, and what the future holds for this madman.

"I go through this process of getting to 100%. And when I do, not a single cell in my body doesn't know because I've already pre-lived and pre-visualized it." - Julian Carr Points to Keep In Mind
    • Making something is better than making nothing
    • The way to learn how to run a business is to run a business
    • Fuel your critical thought with fear to the point of supreme relaxation
    • Meditate on having the right intent and the energy will grant you access
    • Don't pursue the accomplishments. Instead, purse what you love and the accomplishments will come
    • Visualize the moment, so that when it arrives, your body has already lived it
    • Find composure in the most high-pressure moments to see what you're capable of

1: Pushing Yourself to The Limit with Eric Meyer Jun 27, 2018
Show notes "If you have doubt, if you're depressed, if you're uncertain—start by helping someone else. A person will find empowerment through that." - Eric Meyer

Every challenge is both mental and physical.

Trying to separate the two is a fool's errand. Anxiety at work calls for deep breaths and slowing the heart down. And a good workout requires muting the voices of doubt saying, "It's time to go home."

The people who constantly put themselves in these challenging circumstances grow by learning to deal with these voices on a regular basis.

That's why on today's episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by Dr. Eric Meyer. Anesthesiologist by trade here in the United States, Eric found a new patient population by serving farm and mountain populations overseas. A doctor, climber, and high-altitude medical specialist—he has summited Mount Everest two times and was part of an infamous expedition at K2 that resulted in one of the deadliest days in mountaineering history. But had Eric not been there, the day would have been far deadlier.

Tune in to this episode to hear Eric's story—how he has climbed the infamous K2, what he thinks is most important for young people, and why we should embrace the areas outside our comfort zone.

"The folks in these communities—they don't care if their doctor doesn't live there in the community. They just want to see the same person." - Eric Meyer Points to Keep In Mind
    • Consistent care from the same doctor creates the patient-doctor relationship
    • Electronic medical records and insurance emphasis have depersonalized medicine
    • Take your time when trying to find your passion
    • Climb for the love it, not for the glory or other reasons
    • The fatality rate on K2 is roughly 25%
    • Most accidents in mountaineering happen on the way down, not the way up
    • Constantly reevaluate what you are doing and whether you receive a lot of joy from it
