Episode 87: The Witches, Ghosts, and Werewolves of Moosham Castle Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

SKIP TO 17:00 TO GET TO THE STORY Happy first episode of Spooky Season! This week, Aly tells Nat all about the most blood-soaked building in all of Austria: Moosham Castle. Built into a mountain in the forested countryside of Unternberg, this medieval spur castle has been the site of at least 45 battles between 1191 and 1675, including the infamously brutal German Peasants' War. If the bloodshed from multiple wars wasn't haunted enough for you, Moosham Castle was also the location of the imprisonment, trial, torture, and execution of the victims of the Zaubererjackl Witch Trials of 1681. These witch trials are set apart in history due to the demographic of its victims: 109 villagers were executed in just one year, with the majority being children and men. Following the witch trials, werewolf trials were held in this same area, leading to the execution and torture of even more men. Today, the castle has been preserved by a private buyer and remains open to the public as a piece of historical architecture; the torture room still intact with the original tools and instruments used against the werewolves and witches of Austria. Reports of ghostly apparitions and anguished screams still haunt the castle grounds, are you brave enough to step inside? Episode 86: Hans Christian Andersen's Dark Fairytales Sep 29, 2021
    Show notes

Danish author Hans Christian Andersen penned some of the most famous fairy tales of all time; however, was there a dark side to his seemingly innocent children’s stories? This week Nat mystifies Aly with several of the REAL inspirations behind the stories we love, including some dark fairytales you have never heard before! Also who knows what elegiac means--shhh, some mysteries aren’t meant to be solved. Episode 85: Haunted Crossroads Around The World Sep 22, 2021
    Show notes

This week, Aly tells Nat all about the supernatural role crossroads play in nearly all cultures around the globe. In Italy, you can use a crossroads to spot deceased loved ones walking in a ghostly procession. In the Highlands of Scotland, you can sit on a three-legged stool in a crossroads to figure out which of your neighbors will die during the next year. In the U.S., you can perform a ritual to conjure the devil himself at a crossroads. In London, the corpses of criminals and those who died by suicide were buried at crossroads, thereby preventing the souls of the deceased from leaving that area. From hellhounds to “money cats” to demons to poltergeists to “humpbacked mannikins”, all manner of supernatural creatures and spirits can be found at a crossroads. Episode 83: Indrid Cold, "The Grinning Man" (featuring witness testimony) Sep 08, 2021
    Show notes

SKIP TO 6:29 TO GET TO THIS WEEK’S EPISODE! Have you seen The Grinning Man? New Jersey in the late 1960s was a hotbed of paranormal activity and UFO sightings. 1966 in particular was a very active year, with many people from all over the state reporting unidentified objects in the sky and on the ground. However, New Jersey was not the only state plagued by UFOs during this time. West Virginia famously became the site of Mothman between Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, 1966. But did you know that The Mothman wasn’t the only weird creature sighted during this timeframe? This week, Aly tells Nat all about Indrid Cold "The Grinning Man", the alleged alien entity who visited earth in 1966 and may still be here today. What was his purpose? Why was he here? We speak to the daughter of Woodrow Derenberger, Taunia Derenberger, whose father was the first person to interact in a meaningful way with Indrid on November 2, 1966. Episode 82: The Curse of The Scottish Play Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

This week Nat teaches Aly all about a mysterious *unmentionable* play. From the moment it debuted in London one fated afternoon in 1606, this Scottish Play has left nothing but death and misfortune in it's wake. According to the legend, William Shakespeare used a real witch's dark magic incantation as dialogue in Macbeth which enacted a curse upon the play forevermore. Will muttering the title of the play aloud in a theater upset the witch, or is it all just poppycock? Stay tuned to find out (jk, the curse is real). Episode 81: The Ningen Aug 18, 2021
    Show notes

SKIP TO 28:00 TO GET TO THIS WEEK’S EPISODE. It is not clear when the first account of the “Ningen” was reported. Some sources cite the first reported eyewitness of the creatures as taking place in the 1990s, while others claim that the Ningen was first documented all the way back in the late 1950s. While origins are murky, what is not murky is when the creature rose to popularity. In 2002, a post went viral on popular Japanese message board “2Channel” when a user known only as “Part-Timer” posted about her friend’s eye witness account of a white, blubbery, giant humanoid that emerged from the oceans near Antarctica.
