    We are doing things a lil differently this week. This is our last free episode of 2024 so we’re taking a break from the regular format. One of the most fun things about doing Legends of Philadelphia are all the great comments, emails, and DMs we get on the social medias. Listeners clued us in when we were wrong and shared new stuff that we didn’t know before. So, today we’re going to dig through the last ten episodes and talk about what’s next. ***Quick announcement… This will be the last regular episode of Legends of Philadelphia this year. We’re going to be making more content but it’s going to live behind the $5 paywall on our Patreon. In the next couple of weeks we’ll be dropping New Legends after Dark Episodes on Gary Hednick interior decorations, Jerry Pennicole’s Butt Gerbil, Uncle Eddie’s pizza boxes, and Larry Mente the email hacker.     The Weird Story Behind 1888 Bible Riots (Legends of Philadelphia) Jul 29, 2024

    The Philadelphia Bible Riots were a series of deadly conflicts that took place between May and July, 1844. Anti-Catholic mobs, angered by the growing population of Irish immigrants, attacked churches in Kensington and Southwark. The Nativist violence did not solve their problems and instead gave rise to the Gangs of Philadelphia.

The controversy surrounding The Berenstain Bears’ name has been regularly cited as an example of the “Mandela Effect,” named after the idea that many people specifically remember South African President Nelson Mandela passing away in prison, while the public record has him surviving for many years longer. This confusion has generated multiple explanations including an unannounced name change, time travel, parallel universes, supernatural forces or conspiracy theories.     The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Temple University Concert choir made a Christmas album together in 1962. Conducted by Eugene Ormandy, this record sold more than a million copies that season, going on to become "the fastest-selling classical set in history," according to the Record Industry Association of America.     The Bounty Bowl was a notorious NFL game held on Thanksgiving 1989, between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. The game is infamous for allegations that the Eagles coaching staff issued a $200 bounty on Dallas Cowboys kicker Luis Zendejas, who was cut by Philadelphia earlier that season. So, join us as we put the hurt on The Bounty Bowl and the game that took the Eagles and Cowboys rivalry to a whole new level.

    In 1987, the NFL players went on strike for the second time in six years. What was different this time was that when the veterans walked out, the owners brought in replacement players. Random guys off the street wearing official NFL team uniforms played three games that actually counted for the regular-season. While most teams were being staffed by scabs some big name players did actually cross the picket line. What resulted was a very uneven series of games that upended the league standings and enraged organized labor. Today we’re going to take a look at how the Eagles made it through this ordeal by examining the marxist philosophy of Randall Cunningham and Buddy Ryan.

    We wanted to talk about some Philly television history so we put it out there to the audience and let our instagram followers decide between American BandStand and Captain Noah. And the Captain pulled out a resounding win with more than 60% of the vote.

    If you don’t know, Captain Noah and His Magical Ark was a children's television program broadcast in the Philadelphia area from 1967 to 1994. It was filmed and produced at the WPVI-TV, Channel 6 studios on City Line Avenue. Starring W. Carter Merbreier, a cast of puppets and rotating cartoons; Captain Noah kept kids busy everyday from 7 to 9am and a half hour on Saturday and Sunday.

    Welcome back to our two parter on South Street. By the 1950s, South Street was mainly a garment district, with stores for men's suits and other clothing, while the more western areas around South Street served as a cultural and commercial center for South Philadelphia's African American community. Real estate values plummeted after city planner Edmund Bacon and others proposed the Crosstown Expressway connecting the Schuylkill Expressway and I-95 that would have required the complete demolition of South Street and Bainbridge Street. The fight to stop construction went on for decades. Fear of the highway and mounting racial tensions caused an exodus of businesses and families from the area. This sent property value plummeting and the suddenly cheap real estate attracted artists and counterculture-types.

    Luckily it only feels like we’re trapped in South Philly but it wasn’t that long ago you could be locked up for life in South Philly’s Moyamensing Prison. Located at Passyunk Avenue and Reed Street, where the Acme Supermarket sits today; the prison was built in 1835 and operated until 1963 and wasn’t demolished until 1968. Over the years there were hundreds of executions at Moyamensing prison and thousands of criminals passed through its gates. So today we’re going to talk about the most famous jailbirds at Moyamensing Prison.

Today we’re going to explore the history of this old, ugly ballpark and uncover the secrets of four very specific rooms in Veteran’s Stadium.
