The Answering Machine Message: The Unsolved Murder of Jennifer Clemmings with A Simpler Time True Crime Dec 18, 2025

Show notes

A beautiful and vivacious 32-year-old woman had hit a sweet-spot of success in her life. She was a high-ranking sales consultant for the beauty company Mary Kay and on pace to be one of the top ranks in the company. But one evening in 2003, all of her momentum would be halted when her life was snuffed out by a violent sexual predator. When she realized she was in danger, she heroically placed a covert phone call to a friend which was recorded on this friend’s answering machine. The recording is a chilling exchange between Jennifer and the person most likely responsible for taking her life just moments later. Her friend called for help immediately upon receiving the message, but it was too late. And to this day, nobody has been able to identify the evil voice in this message. Connections to nearby cases and forensic advances give her family hope that they too will get answers someday soon. And they are not giving up.

**Quick Correction: In the episode, I discuss that Jennifer had hit the Mary Kay rank of earning the Pink Cadillac based on source material I had found. In talking with her niece, she let me know that while she was a highly ranked sales director and on her way to it, she hadn't quite reached that rank. This is relevant for accuracy (which I value) and for perspective on what inventory and sales she would have had to maintain for rank.

221. “Brothers” - The Case of Tina Livernash Heins - Mayport, Florida Oct 23, 2025

Show notes

An open door, a “confession”, and a bloody fingerprint.

On April 17th, 1994, 19-year-old Tina Livernash Heins was found brutally murdered in her apartment in Mayport, Florida.

Tina was a newlywed and four months pregnant at the time. Her husband, Jeremy Heins was serving in the Navy and on duty on the USS Leyte Gulf the night his wife was murdered.

That left Tina alone in the apartment with her brother-in-law, Chad Heins. Chad claimed he was feet away asleep on the couch when someone came in, murdered Tina, and set fires in the apartment.

Chad Heins was convicted of Tina’s murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, evidence, both new and old, came to light that changed everything.
