Murdaugh Murders and Boat Crash That Killed Mallory Beach — Everything We Know Feb 21, 2023

In February 2019, Paul Murdaugh and friends took his family boat out for a night of drinking and partying that turned deadly when the group crashed into a bridge, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach. The then 19-year-old Murdaugh would later be indicted on three felony charges related to the death of Beach. While awaiting trial, Paul and his mother, Maggie, were murdered at their South Carolina home in June 2021. This has led to questions about whether the drunken boating accident influenced the brutal murders which Paul’s father, Alex Murdaugh, was indicted for in July 2022. Alex Murdaugh called 911 on September 4, 2021, claiming he was shot in the head while changing a tire on the side of the road. Later, the disgraced lawyer would admit he planned and attempted to complete a murder-suicide scheme for insurance money with a former client of his, Curtis “cousin Eddie” Smith. Murdaugh indicated that he planned the roadside shooting with Smith. However, the lines of truth are blurred and it’s not clear whether Murdaugh’s confession implicating Smith as the gunman is accurate. The Law&Crime Network’s Angenette Levy discusses the incident with Smith’s lawyer, Aimee Zmroczek.

Murdaugh Murders and Mysterious Death of Stephen Smith — What’s the Connection? Feb 17, 2023

Leading up to the murders of Alex Murdaugh’s wife and son in June 2021, another person with connections to the disgraced lawyer’s family died. Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student from South Carolina, was found dead on the side of a road in Hampton County in 2015. Although originally ruled a hit-and-run, SLED investigators reopened the cold case investigation into Stephen’s death shortly after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed. Investigators have not revealed whether Stephen’s death is connected to the Murdaugh murders but are aware that Smith and the Murdaugh brothers knew each other. Supporters have continued to seek justice for Stephen to this day. The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber is joined by Susanne Andrews, the Founder of Standing for Stephen.
