Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

    Full Ep: NHL Star/Former Broadcaster Jeremy Roenick 4 4 22 Apr 05, 2022
    Show notes

He went from NHL star to piranha. Jeremy Roenick’s career and life turned upside down when fired by NBC for sexual comments he made concerning one of his broadcast partners. Roenick, ever defiant, called it just a blip but he’s been off the air for two years now. Meanwhile, the former star of the Chicago Blackhawks and several other teams seems happy where he’s at despite being on the outside looking in when it comes to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Roenick is in the top 40 all time in goals and points but a history marred by some I’ll advised actions have left him wondering why he’s not a hall of famer.
That said he was a lightening rod, most notably for the Blackhawks where he was a top notch player and fan favorite.
Hear some interesting if not eye opening stories about from this renegade star.

Full Ep: Pat Cassidy Legendary Chicago Radio Personality 3 28 22 Mar 29, 2022
    Show notes

How would like to get up at 2:30 in the morning….for 51 years! That’s what the legendary Chicago radio news anchor Pat Cassidy did almost exclusively during his illustrious career. After retiring at the end of 2021 Cassidy admits his sleep patterns are still off. (You think?) But there’s no urge to return after signing off at WBBM Newsradio where he spent the last 22 years. Prior to that he was at the competitor, WMAQ All news and several other stations.
Cassidy’s booming voice was a steadying influence during so many news breaking stories but he’s also a big sports fan and grilled ex Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy with a question during his weekly interview with the station. Cassidy has plenty of sports related stories including with the Chicago White Sox and how he founded the William “Refrigerator” Perry fan club!

    Show notes

We're back with the latest edition of the podcast that brings you news, analysis and opinion in sports media and coverage and host T.J. Rives with Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of Sportsmediawatch.com are ready to go.
First, the guys discuss the always wild first weekend of the NCAA Men's Hoop Tourney. This included the usual drama and upsets, but also favorites like Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas and UCLA winning too. How did the dramatic Duke-Michigan State finish Sunday evening compare to previous marquee games in past years on the opening weekend? Also, what effect do the games being on "cable" networks like TBS/TNT have on the numbers, etc??
Then, they discuss ESPN making their Monday Night Football blockbuster hires of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to take over their games after their 20 year run together doing Sunday NFL + the playoffs on Fox Sports. What will the impact be of those two huge names/personalities coming to ESPN? What does Jon think of Al Michaels going to Amazon Prime's new Thursday night game? And, what about Kevin Burkhardt sliding into the top NFL role, now, for Fox?
The guys finish with some always fun "Love it or Leave it?" conversation on college hoop replay system/delays, how many screens are appropriate to be going on at once and what crazy reality TV shows appeal to Jon, as well?

Full Ep: Pat Foley Chicago Blackhawks Broadcaster Part II 3 15 22 Mar 15, 2022
    Show notes

Many of us needed some kind of push to get started in the media business and Pat Foley is no exception. But the hall of fame voice of the Blackhawks got his from his dad and eventually to the organization that has employed him for 40 years! The late Bob Foley owned a Buick dealership. One of his loyal customer was Michael Wirtz, the son of Arthur who at that time owned the Blackhawks. The franchise is still run by the family with Rocky (Arthur’s grandson) now in charge now. Wirtz had his car serviced and in his cassette deck, Foley’s play by play work with the minor league Grand Rapid Owls. It was Bob Foley who suggested Wirtz listen to it and that’s how Pat became the voice of the Hawks in 1980.
There is plenty more appealing stories in part 2 of this interview including Foley being part of one of the most thrilling events in Chicago Stadium history, the great rivalries the Hawks had with the then Minnesota Northstars and one of the saddest days in the franchises’ existence.
