Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

The Ringer's Bryan Curtis On College Football Playoff | Last Word On Sports Media Podcast Dec 26, 2023
    Show notes

From our latest edition of the" Last Word on Sports Media Podcast," host T.J. Rives was joined by Bryan Curtis of TheRinger.com and his own "Press Box Podcast."
In addtion to being a tremendous writer and host on sports, Bryan is also an alum of the Texas Longhorns and a huge college football fan. So, it seems natural to discuss the controversies around the final four team playoff for 2023 that will move to 12 team playoff next year.
In specific, Bryan weighs in on how badly Florida State, unbeaten ACC champs at 13-0, was snubbed by being left out this year, specficially for Texas and Alabama, who both had a loss. Was part of the mis-treatment that FSU angered ESPN and the ACC by threatening to leave their conference due to lack of revenue, etc. as the season heightened? Specifically, did ESPN's massive influence play the biggest role in leaving the Noles out, Bryan gives his takes.
Also, will an expanded playoff kill the interest and enthusiasm at the end of the regular season and conference championship games, because now, 12 teams at the top know that they are in the playoff?
    The guys debate that, too.
It's all from this conversation with Bryan Curtis of TheRinger.com on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.

Chicago Sports Radio Reporting Legend George Ofman Part II | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Dec 19, 2023
    Show notes

If not for you I’m not sure where this thing would have gone. I had never heard of TJ Rives until he appeared on my cell phone offering his help in guiding 143 podcasts over three years. Well done younger man.
There’s no sense of melancholy here though I wish I had more guests to interview. Some declined, others never bothered to respond but the nearly 100 I corralled managed to turn this project into a rousing success. And they weren’t just from the broadcast industry. There was an umpire, hockey franchise owner, PA announcer, national anthem singer and baseball executive, among others.
There were absolute legends such as Brent Musburger and Bob Costas and women who have had a dramatic impact on our industry.
Through it all I had a blast. Each podcast involved around 8 hours of work, more than half of it editing while scouring for sound bites that fit the conversation. And there three others who were very involved in this podcast. Thank you Will Hatczel, Tatiana Shinkan and Nick Tocci.
But most importantly you, the listener, some of you who took the time to comment on social media. I really appreciated that.
And I wrote a book on the podcast, “Tell me a story I don’t know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends” which is available on Amazon Books. Thank you Triumph Books for taking a chance on a very unique project.
Who knows what’s next but I can tell you this for certain: I’m not done yet!

Chicago Sports Radio Reporting Legend George Ofman Part I | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Dec 12, 2023
    Show notes

I had to consider who would interview me for the final episodes of “Tell me a story I don’t know.” I didn’t consider it for long. TJ Rives (@bucsidelineguy on Twitter) was a no brainer.
TJ has been a vital part of this podcast for over three years. He’s heard every podcast so he knew the drill: get me to tell stories you’ve never heard before. I did from childhood to free-lancing to podcasting to writing a book!
It’s been quite a ride and chronicled perfectly by TJ. I fished out sound bites from decades ago and most notably, my call of Pete Rose tying Ty Cobb for the all time hit record in 1985. What’s fascinating about all this is being on the other end of the podcast in which I’ve interviewed nearly 100 personalities.
There are many more events and sound bites in part one so I hope you listen.
“Tell me a story I don’t know” is sponsored by Mr.Duct (mrductcleaning.com) and my new book, Tell me a story I don’t know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends is available on Amazon books and Chicago area book stores.
