This week Melissa and Ellie are back to cover chapters 43 through 49 of House of Flame and Shadow, and things are moving — mostly in the wrong direction. Lidia meets her sons (one of them is fine about it, the other is NOT), the Ocean Queen picks a side after insisting she never picks a side, and we finally get some answers about what was in the Autumn King's personal notebook — kind of. Bryce and the gang split into Team Archives and Team Caves, Tharion completely ignores a direct order and jumps ship anyway because of course he does, and within five literal minutes of arriving in Avallen, someone is married. Oh, and Hypaxia — allegedly one of the greatest necromancers alive — is now 0 for 2. Sigrid is back, but she is not Sigrid anymore, and now they need a Thunderbird, which, sure, fine, okay. As always, we are reading for vibes and getting it wrong in real time — come get it wrong with us.

Things are escalating and nobody is coping gracefully — Melissa and Ellie break down chapters 36 through 42 of House of Flame and Shadow, where the pressure on basically every character hits a new high and SJM reminds us she has zero chill. The gang reacts accordingly. Theories are floated, feelings are had, and at least one of our hosts may or may not spiral a little. Strap in.

Explaining SJM to a Warhammer Guy | HOFAS 29-35 May 11, 2026

Surprise, besties — Ellie's on maternity leave (baby's here, everyone's safe, screaming and crying we love her), so Melissa's husband Zeke is filling in, and yes, he has not read a single word of Crescent City. We dragged him through House of Flame and Shadow Chapters 29–35 anyway: Bryce gets shackled by her absolute trash bag of a father, the Autumn King helps himself to Truth-Teller (rude), Ithan goes necromancer-shopping to un-kill Sigrid (we have Thoughts on resurrection cheapening a death, thank you), Jesiba Roga continues to live in Melissa's head as Joe Rogan for reasons no one can explain, Lidia FINALLY reveals herself by dunking on The Hawk in an elevator — RIP the coolest name with the least impactful death — and then casually saves the entire gang before nuzzling Ruhn goodbye and yeeting herself off a cliff (with a bullet, just for fun). If your boyfriend/husband/situationship has ever side-eyed your SJM obsession, this is the episode to put on in the car — Zeke is the everyman ambassador and he's doing his best. Spoilers through HoFaS Ch. 35, plus ACOTAR and Throne of Glass at large, so reader beware. New chapters every week, Patreon afterparty as always, and somebody please bully Zeke into starting Red Rising in the comments.

Wait… Is the HORN from Throne of Glass?? | HOFAS 22-28 May 04, 2026

Buckle up besties, because for the first time in literal forever we did our HOMEWORK and came with RECEIPTS. We're tearing through chapters 22-28 of House of Flame and Shadow, which means it's time to unhinge our jaws and theorize about whether the Hawk is secretly Vaughn from Throne of Glass, whether Bryce's back tattoo horn used to belong to the Crochan witches, and whether Azriel is about to pull a full Enalius and finally free the Illyrians from their ancient nonsense. Plus: Bryce frees a Snow White lookalike from a sarcophagus with the bare minimum amount of caution (girl, PLEASE), Ataraxia inexplicably refuses to do its one job, the Viper Queen is out here losing on every front, and Hunt's tortured arc is officially testing Melissa's romance girly limits. We're also side-eyeing the introduction of resurrection as a plot device because excuse me, what was the point of any of those deaths?? Come spiral with us. Spoilers through everything SJM has ever published, as per usual.

The Chapter That Broke The Fandom | HOFAS 15-21 Apr 27, 2026

Buckle up, besties!! Chapters 15 through 21 of House of Flame and Shadow are the ones that sent the entire fandom into a full-blown spiral, and we're getting into ALL of it. From a hologram info-dump that has readers divided, to a single sentence that may have just confirmed one of the biggest theories in the SJM universe, to a moment so brutal and unexpected our jaws are still on the floor — this stretch of holdfast is packed. We're breaking down the plot holes that have everyone yelling "wait, he can do WHAT?!", connecting dots between Crescent City, ACOTAR, and Throne of Glass, debating whether a certain character was always secretly the villain, and asking the question no one wants to answer: did Bryce just bring something terrible into a brand new world? Plus theories on who bought out you-know-who, why Azriel reacted THAT way to the hologram, and a Ruhn moment we genuinely cannot stop thinking about. If you've read these chapters, you already know. If you haven't — what are you waiting for?!

Sarah, We Have Questions | HOFAS 8–14 Apr 20, 2026

Okay, we have a LOT to talk about. Apollion drops bombs we weren't ready for, Hunt's whole backstory might not be what we thought, Lidia finally shows her cards, and a certain shadowsinger shows up where we absolutely did NOT expect him. Also… we may or may not be formally apologizing to everyone who shipped Bryce and Azriel because we GET it now. Throw in the Mask, a giant worm, and an 8-pointed star theory that might change everything, and yeah — Sarah, we have questions. A LOT of questions.

Is THIS Actually Worth Reading? | HOFAS 1-7 Apr 14, 2026

Show notes

Starting House of Flame and Shadow is already… a lot. In these first few chapters, we’re thrown right back into chaos with zero breathing room—Bryce is in a completely different world, Hunt and Ruhn are getting absolutely wrecked, and somehow we’ve got magic, mech suits, and multiverse theories all colliding at once. We break down everything from the wild crossover moments to the questionable choices (looking at you, magic bean), and try to figure out if this book is actually setting up something genius… or just spiraling.

Everything finally comes to a head in these chapters and… yeah, we were NOT prepared. From massive lore reveals to theories actually starting to make sense (or completely fall apart), this stretch flips everything we thought we knew on its head. We’re talking shocking truths, chaotic decisions, emotional damage, and an ending that genuinely left us staring at each other like “wait… WHAT?!” If you’ve been holding onto your theories, this is the episode where they either get validated or absolutely wrecked. Let’s get into it.

Welcome back to the L.A.M.E. Book Club Podcast! It is our second-to-last episode covering House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas, and things are officially popping off! Melissa and Ellie are breaking down the absolute chaos of chapters 64 through 70. We are diving deep into Baxian's massive reveal as Danika’s secret mate, Tharion making the wildest choice to enslave himself to the Viper Queen (and then immediately asking for PTO), and Ruhn and Cormac bonding over their terrible fathers. Plus, we discuss why Ruhn needs to focus on the heist at hand instead of planning to overthrow the Autumn King—one coup at a time, sir! We also get sidetracked by a very real, very traumatizing story about Melissa getting pinched by a stranger at Target for St. Patrick's Day. You don't want to miss it!

Respectfully… WHAT WAS THAT | HOSAB 57–63 Mar 16, 2026

Show notes

Chaos. Public scandals. Questionable decisions. A summoning that ABSOLUTELY should not have happened. And somehow… that’s not even the wildest part. In chapters 57–63 of House of Sky and Breath, Bryce chooses violence (socially), the Autumn King gets publicly humiliated, demon politics get messier than ever, and we spiral into theories that may or may not hold up under scrutiny. Also: masked ball drama, secret identities, romantic chaos, and one ritual that had us screaming “THIS IS A BAD IDEA” the entire time. If you’re feeling confused, overwhelmed, emotionally compromised, or personally attacked by these chapters… same. Welcome to the meltdown.
