    Ep. #341: Weaves Aug 11, 2017
    Show notes

Weaves is a fantastic, noisy, and infectious rock band based in Toronto, Ontario. In 2016, Buzz Records released Weaves’ self-titled debut album and it went on to be regarded as one of the finest records to ever come out of Toronto and was recently shortlisted for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize. The other day I drove down to the Greater Good Bar in Toronto to meet with singer and songwriter Jasmyn Burke, guitarist Morgan Waters, and drummer Spencer Cole to discuss their band and delve into their self-titled record with track-by-track commentary. You’ll hear snippets of each song as we go along. We also got into breaking news, as the band just announced that their follow-up record, Wide Open, will be out October 6, and so we talked about what the new album is like and also the first single, “#53,” which you can hear in its entirety on this show. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #340: Anne T. Donahue Aug 08, 2017
    Show notes

Anne T. Donahue is an esteemed journalist, columnist, and comedy writer based in Cambridge, Ontario. A bona fide social media superstar, Donahue covers music, television, fashion, film, feminism, and other topics, which she frames from her own compelling and witty perspective. She has worked for MTV and contributed pieces to the Guardian, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, and the Globe and Mail and you might have seen her on E! Celebrity Style Story or heard her on the CBC Radio show, q. Anne first appeared on this show in 2013 and was recently featured on a Long Night episode discussing social media and fame. She’s currently writing a book for ECW Press called Nobody Cares so, since we’re both Cambridge people, she and I met at the 50s Grill & Deli recently and had a deeply personal conversation that reveals a lot about her, a lot about me, and a lot about what she thinks of me and you and all of us. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #338: Harrison Aug 01, 2017
    Show notes

Harrison is a young music producer based in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario. Now in his early 20s, Harrison first turned heads when he began uploading sample-based songs to Soundcloud in his teens. He has evolved into one of Toronto’s most prolific producers, crafting his own original electronic, hip-hop, R&B, and pop sound that has won him legions of fans and peers. In 2016, Last Gang released his debut LP, Checkpoint Titanium, which Harrison continues to tour behind when not working hard on a follow-up. I was invited into his Toronto home recently where we discussed his hometown and musical awakening, his love for Netflix and video games, why he doesn’t sing or rap over his music, his special guest vocalists and whom he’d love to work with, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #337: Jonny Sun Jul 28, 2017
    Show notes

Jonny Sun is an architect, designer, engineer, artist, playwright, and comedy writer who originally calls Toronto home. Sun is currently a doctoral student at MIT, a fellow at the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet and Society at Harvard, and a creative researcher at the Harvard metaLAB, where he studies social media and online community. He’s a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture where he was awarded many prizes and fellowships and is an honours graduate of the Infrastructure program in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto. As impressive as all of those credentials are, for almost 500,000 of his followers on twitter, Jonny Sun mans a clever account and is at the forefront of new forms of sparse, effective communication, language, and terminology. His new, bestselling graphic novel is something of a meditation on the social media landscape. It’s called everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too and is available now via Harper Perennial. Jonny and I met in a streetside park in downtown Toronto to discuss his relationship with the city he once called home, the importance of Second City and improv and sketch comedy to his outlook on life and his academic pursuits, his comedic influences, the state of social media and communication, his book, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #336: New Swears Jul 25, 2017
    Show notes

New Swears is a rock ‘n’ roll band from Ottawa, Ontario. Formed in 2012, the band consists of four men who claim their names are Scru Bar, Sammy J Scorpion, Beej Eh, and Nick Nofun. In the summer of 2017, Dine Alone Records released their dynamic, infectious, punk-infused power-pop album, And the Magic of Horses, and New Swears have been touring wherever possible since. They recently joined me at a studio inside of CFRU 93.3 FM in Guelph for an extensive chat about pretty much nothing at all. Literally, nothing. We discussed nothing. Usually on the show, there’s something. This is absolutely nothing. Was it fun? Sure. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

Ep. #334: Change of Heart Jul 18, 2017
    Show notes

Change of Heart is an iconic, underground Canadian rock ‘n’ roll band based in Toronto, Ontario. Formed in 1982, Change of Heart initially consisted of singer/guitarist Ian Blurton, bassist Rob Taylor, keyboardist Bernard Maiezza, and drummer Ron Duffy. By the time Change of Heart disbanded in 1997, Blurton and Maiezza were the sole original members left. A rather different, 13-person version of Change of Heart entered Reaction Studio in early January of 1992 to record the album Smile, which would come to be regarded as a landmark effort in Toronto music history. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the record’s release, Label Obscura is reissuing a remastered, double-vinyl limited edition of Smile, which has prompted Change of Heart to re-convene for shows, including one in Toronto at the Horseshoe on July 22, 2017, dates in Waterloo, London, Kingston, and Ottawa in September, and shows in Calgary and Edmonton in October. I recently travelled to Change of Heart’s practice space in Toronto to meet with Michael Armstrong, Glenn Milchem, Rob Taylor, Bernard Maiezza, and Ian Blurton to discuss the history of their band, the album Smile, what Toronto was really like in the early 1990s, and other stuff too. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #333: Kevin McDonald Jul 13, 2017
    Show notes

Kevin McDonald is an ingenious comedic performer and writer currently based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Originally from Toronto, McDonald is best known as a member of the hugely influential Canadian sketch troupe, the Kids in the Hall. This August marks the first anniversary of McDonald’s inventive variety show podcast, Kevin McDonald’s Kevin McDonald Show, a mix of sketch comedy and conversations and musical performances, which has featured guest turns from Mike Myers, Wallace Shawn, Rachel Dratch, Ted Leo, Michael Showalter, Craig Finn, Susanna Hoffs, Rob Corddry, and his fellow Kids, Scott Thompson and Dave Foley, among many others. McDonald and I had a chat recently about living in Winnipeg, his idiosyncratic approach to comedy podcasts, John Lennon’s perfect rock ‘n’ roll life, the new wave of sketch comedy, news about the Kids in the Hall and their upcoming appearance at a benefit show featuring Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, and many members of the original SCTV cast, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

    Ep. #332: Billy Bragg Jul 11, 2017
    Show notes

Billy Bragg is an iconic musician, songwriter, singer, and activist who lives in and hails from the United Kingdom. An active and outspoken artist for 40 years, Bragg has pledged his life and livelihood to making a positive change in this world and urging others, particularly younger generations, to hold authority figures and politicians to account for their decisions. He speaks of empathy and political engagement and he has been speaking of such things long before the likes of Brexit and the presidency of Donald Trump. On July 7, 2017, Bragg released a new song called “The Sleep of Reason” and he and his collaborator, Joe Henry, are appearing at the Hillside Festival in Guelph the weekend of July 14 to perform songs from their acclaimed 2016 album, Shine a Light: Field Recordings From the Great American Railroad. They’ll be playing some other songs too, I’m sure. Billy and I caught up this week to extensively discuss “The Sleep of Reason” and its lyrics, the current political landscape, travelling in trains on the American railway system with Joe Henry and cutting their record along the way, Gordon Lightfoot, his future plans, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.
