KH 386: Synology Madness - Part IV - Create an OTA Network DVR. Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

If you've got a Synology NAS, you're 1/3 of the way to cord-cutting Nirvana!

In this episode of Know How, Padre and Jason show you how to use a Synology NAS, Plex and an HDHomeRun tuner to create an Over-The-Air networked Digital Video Recorder that will allow you to make your favorite programming available on-demand... with NO monthly fee! -- Also... privacy enthusiasts need to see our step-by-step creation of a SSL VPN using a Synology RT2600AC router.

Project Summary We're going to use a Synology NAS, a Plex account, and a SiliconDust HDHomeRun to create an OTA (Over-The-Air) Network DVR. (Digital Video Recorder) What will you need? 1. A COMPATIBLE Synology NAS (Many of their older boxes will not support Plex) 2. A PLEX pass 3. A Network-connected Tuner SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect Duo ~$80 * Dual OTA Tuners * 100Mbps Ethernet Demo: 1. Connect Antenna to HDHomeRun 2. Connect Network to HDHomeRun 3. Connect Power to HDHomeRun 4. Run HDHomeRun application 5. Scan for Channels ** This will make sure that you've got your HDHR connected properly to the network and the antenna Now Let's setup Plex! * We've already installed the Plex package and made sure that we've got the latest update * The following instructions are assuming you have a working Plex installation and HDHR From Home 1. Settings > Server (Tab) > Live TV & DVR 2. "Set Up Plex DVR" (Button towards bottom) 3. Plex should find your HDHR -- Click "Continue" 4. Under the windows "DVR Setup" -- Select "Antenna" (Or Cable, if you have cable) -- Select Country -- Select "Scan Channels" (This part will take a while -- It's got to go through all the possible channels) -- "Continue" 5. Under the "Electornic Program Guide" windows -- Select Language -- Input your Postal Code (TWiT is 94954) (Plex is finding a program guide for your area) -- "Continue" ** This will take a while... it's downloading all the airings for your area. ** Plex Live is now installed! Demo 1. Watching Live 2. Recording 3. Recording Settings * A problem is that shows will often start a little before their scheduled time and/or end AFTER their schedule -- Settings > Server (Tab) > Live TV & DVR -- "DVR Settings" -- Change "Minutes Before Start" and "Minutes After Start" Synology RT2600AC ~$200 * Quad-Core Qualcom IPQ8065 1.7Ghz Processor (Faster than the Broadcom 1Ghz in the RT1900AC) * 512MB DDR3 System Memory 4GB Flash (x2 the RT1900AC) * 1 x Gigabit WAN port * 4 x Gigabit LAN Ports (1 can be reassigned to be a secondary WAN port) * 1 x USB 3.0 Port * 1 x USB 2.0 Port * 1 x SD Card Reader (SDXC + SDHC) * 4 x 4 MIMO Antenna Array Wireless Specs * 802.11a/b/g/n/ac * DUAL (and simultaneous) radios (2.4Ghz & 5Ghz) * Max 2.4 Throughput: 800Mbps * Max 5 Throughput: 1.73Gbps (2 x 2 Wave 2) * Beamforming Notable OS Features: * Bandwidth Monitoring * QoS + Quotas + Access Rules (time/type of connection, etc.) * Runs Synology SRM, so plenty of plugins (VPN, Media Center, Radius Server) ** Most importantly -- The RT2600 gives you the option of securing the internet access of certain devices! Installing and Configuring a VPN on a Synology Router Install "VPN Plus Server" * "Package Center" Add a User 1. Control Panel > User > "+" -- Give the user a * 2

KH 385: Lithium Powered, UPS Raspberry Pi Case - LiPi: A self-contained, battery powered Raspberry Pi NUC Jun 07, 2018
    Show notes

The Raspberry Pi is an amazing device that can be everything from a server to a game machine, but have you ever wanted to have a self-contained, portable unit? Or maybe a server NUC with a built-in uninterruptible Power Supply?

On this episode of Know How, Patrick and Padre take you through the steps of creating a "LiPi" which can give you up to 12 hours of power for your RasPi while also acting as an auto-switching UPS that can run on 6-26 volts!

    Project Summary:
We've done several RasPi projects this year that could bennefit from an independent power source. (The TorPi, the Pi-Hole, The RetroPi) -- We want to create a power system that can act BOTH as a power system AND an uninterruptible power system.

    Project Requirements:

    1. Must have a way to power the RasPi WITHOUT using the USB connector
    2. Must have a way to switch from line power to battery power AND BACK without disrupting operation.
    3. Must have a way to turn OFF power completely (to prevent draining the battery pack)
    4. Must operate or more than 3 hours
    5. NUC sized
    6. Should have a way to gracefully power-down the Pi
    7. Must have a way to swap the SD card without dissasembly

    LiPi Parts

    1. Raspberry Pi 3 ~$35
    2. 5V UBEC (Hobbywing - Accepts 5.5 - 26V) ~$3
    3. 3 x 18650 LiPo Cells (3800mAh) ~$8
    4. 5.5MM x 2.1mm DC Power Jack ~$1
    5. Rocker Switch ~$12
    6. Momentary Switch ~$5.59
    7. Lithium Ion Battery Charger w/Protection ~$1
    8. JST Connectors ~$0.60
    9. Walkera Connectors (x 3) ~$0.40

    Total: ~$51

    Power Calculations:

    • ~5 Watt/Hours
    • Each Cell can provide (3800 x 3.7 = ) ~14 Watt/Hours
    • We have ~42 Watt/Hours of capacity
    • But we don't run down all the way... 30% is when the protection circuit will kick in.
    • So we should count on 29 Watt hours of USABLE power
    • 29 / 5 = Just under 6 hours AT FULL POWER
    • Shutting down WiFi/Bluetooth and not pegging 100% power should give us close to 8 hours.

The 3D design can be found at the following link:

Is it time for you to up your network game? If so, THIS is the episode for you!

Padre and Jason Howell take a look at some of the basic features of a Synology Network Attached Storage box in the first of several episodes about expanding your networking horizons. Learn how to automatically backup all the data on ALL the computers in your network, then learn about creating your own cloud, away from prying eyes. It's all coming up... on "Know How"! Dropbox... but on your own personal cloud Pre-Req: * You need to have your "QuickConnect ID" enabled * You will be using a local user account to connect your device to the server, so make sure you have an account setup on the NAS that you're willing to let your phone use. Installing Server: 1. Open Package Center 2. Search for and Install Moments -- It will automatically install several packages including "Synology Application Service, Search, Drive, etc) Installing Client: * Availible for both Android and iOS * Here is the Android Version 1. Install Client 2. Run Client and enter in the following information: - QuickConnect ID of your NAS (You CAN enter the IP address, but then connectivity might be limited) - Account (This is an account ON THE NAS!) - Password (of the account on the NAS) - HTTPS (OF COURSE! -- Slower, but better to be safe) Google Docs, but in YOUR cloud! Installing Server: 1. Open Package Center 2. Search for and Install "Office" -- It will automatically install PHP 7.0 Moments is like "Google Photos" but entirely on YOUR server (CLOUD Act...) * Allows you to automatically upload your photos to your server * Uses LOCAL Machine learning to categorize your images Pre-Req: * You need to have your "QuickConnect ID" enabled * You will be using a local user account to connect your device to the server, so make sure you have an account setup on the NAS that you're willing to let your phone use.
