We’re back, baby.
In this honest, tell-all comeback episode, I’m sharing where I've been and what’s been happening behind the scenes in the world of DEI.
I’m talking backlash, bans, breakthroughs, and what the future of the podcast — and the movement — really looks like.
If you want to keep listening (and help make this work possible), I’d love to have you join me as a paid supporter. You gain access to all the goods: new podcast episodes each week, direct communication with me, hundreds of essays, and access to an online community.
This episode is a goodbye, at least for now. (And it's also a few quick words on The Fourth of July, since that feels relevant.) I'll miss ya dearly.

Many people don't know that the civil rights being fought for in the 1960s were actually a reality a century earlier, in the 1860s, for a few short years. Immediately after slavery, Black Americans saw integrated schooling, Black officials elected to office, and social and economic advancement. However, all of this progress was met with such fury, we forget it was ever made at all.
Too many history lessons skip over this eventful period of time. The cultural war that followed the Civil War; surprising gains made; secret, off-the-books political deals... There's a whole lot more to the story than "40 acres and a mule."

What's wrong with how we view race? Well, on both sides of the partisan divide, how we view race can perpetuate racism. Totally embracing race ("Race is an important part of who you are") comes with serious consequences for people of color, and so does totally rejecting race ("Let's just not see color").
Full-transparency: no matter which side you're on, my hope is that you'll gain a better understanding of its potential weaknesses. If you think your approach to antiracism is flawless, I want you to think again.

What happens when news media stops considering what we need to hear and starts playing into what we want to hear? When they stop treating us like students and start treating us like consumers? Answer: Bad stuff. Very bad stuff.
In this episode, I explain how informing and entertaining have opposite purposes that don't play together nicely. We also talk about a lot of things that I’m convinced are bad for your soul (doomscrolling, political memes, echo chambers, etc) and how to take care of yourself (ditching the memes, diversifying your news feed, local engagement, etc).

Should white people be taking the lead and practicing antiracism or stepping aside and following people of color? Do people of color want to speak for themselves, or does that burden them with representing their entire race?
In this episode, we examine the role that white people have to play in the antiracism movement. We talk through the ethics of different contexts: white people who have careers in antiracism, whether white people should lead antiracism-focused organizations, and what role white people have in conversations about race. (Spoiler: It's an important one!)

Gaslighting is the word of the year of 2022, and I have very mixed feelings about it. In this episode, I teach you what gaslighting is, where the term comes from, and I share personal examples of feeling gaslit. But there are also a lot of issues with how we think of gaslighting, and I explain how my views of gaslighting led me to get certain things really wrong.

I’m back with a fan-favorite episode, but we’ve got all new terms to unpack. Let's talk through the dos and don'ts of common terms relating to antiracism. We're focusing on terms (like tokenizing, ally versus accomplice, racial battle fatigue, and more) that are misused, controversial, and/ or misunderstood.
Should you call yourself a white ally? Is that up to you to decide? What do I mean when I say that not all racism is discrimination? What does it mean to tokenize someone? What is racial battle fatigue? I address all of these questions and more.

"I really didn't like his tone." "She just seems so angry." "I can't listen to her when she's heated like that."
We're breaking down tone policing, setting out to answer this question: In conversations about race, does tone matter? Should it matter? In this episode, I run through all of the best perspectives so you can figure out where you stand.

Let's talk through the dos and don'ts of common terms relating to antiracism. We're focusing on terms (like BIPOC, minority, microaggression, and more) that are misused, controversial, and/ or misunderstood.
When should I say "BIPOC" and when should I not? Should I say minority or minoritized? What about underprivileged? What does virtue signaling really mean? Why is the term "microaggression" controversial, even in the antiracism movement? What's the problem with saying underprivileged? I address all of these questions and more.

It can be easy to dismiss any criticism and write it off as problematic, but I'm confident that there are some important things to learn from critics of CRT.
Critical race theory is a great diagnosis of the issue of racism, but when we try to go from diagnosis of the problem to solution, we can get things really wrong.

For every call-to-action encouraging white people to build relationships with people of color, there should be a lesson on how to do this well. Because increased contact doesn't guarantee increased fellowship.
I wanted to break up some of the lesson-type episodes with a personal story. In this episode, we’re breaking down an experience I had when a white woman came up to me and said some kind words that actually carried a tough message. We’ve all been there, where good intentions don’t play out quite right. So we all have something to learn from this.

Critical race theory is misrepresented by people who oppose it and misunderstood by those who embrace it.
I’d bet money that you don’t know as much as you think you know about critical race theory. I was surprised when I went to the original work of the scholars who created it. In this episode, we clear away the assumptions and we get right at the heart of the matter: What is critical race theory, really?
This is part one of a two-part series on critical race theory. Check out CRT 102, the episode where we address modern issues with what CRT has become.

In this episode, I teach you everything you need to know about trigger warnings: what they are, what they aim to do, and what research has to say about it all.
Trigger warnings are well-meaning efforts to consider the effects of discussing heavy topics. But study after study has shown that trigger warnings have no positive effect on mental health for anyone, let alone people experiencing PTSD. Trigger warnings are a direct violation of what psychologists teach us about trauma, harm, and healing. This episode is a brief, intriguing look at how I came to the conclusion that trigger warnings do more harm than good.

Racism (as I’m speaking of it here) is a problem of hatred. But what do we do when things are not-totally-racist-but-still-not-great? When the problem is apathy rather than malice, we have a case of racial insensitivity.
In this episode, I teach you how to identify the root issue so you can respond well. Apathy and hatred are similar, but they are opposite issues. Different problems need to be met with different solutions.
