    Show notes

Why did Jason LaChance want to talk with Dan Karaty? Despite being in the public eye, Dan lived with a secret only he and his wife knew. He was an alcoholic.

Dan’s career started as a dancer on Broadway and on award show stages with Britney Spears. After transitioning to a choreographer, he worked with Britney Spears, NSYNC, Jessica Simpson, Kylie Minogue, Justin Timberlake, and Usher. In 2005, So You Think You Can Dance debuted in the US with Dan as a judge. After, Dan took the brave step of sharing with the public his lifelong struggles with anxiety and alcohol. Dan is a doting and devoted father and husband that made mistakes due to his struggles.

Dan has gone on to create the podcast If I'm Being Honest. If I’m Being Honest will strip away surface facades to deliver the real, in-depth, and sometimes ugly truths of my life, and those of my courageous guests; hopefully revealing unique paths to happiness, success, recovery, and redemption

Clayton English & Greg Glod | The War On Drugs & Addiction A Mental Health Issue Not Judicial Jan 29, 2023
    Show notes

Why did I want to talk with Clayton English and Greg Glod? They're the hosts of The War on Drugs Podcast. Clayton English is an award-winning comedian who took home the win on Last Comic Standing, and Greg Glod, a Criminal Justice Fellow for Americans for Prosperity. We talk about everything from addiction being a mental health issue and not a judicial issue, the racial stereotypes associated with certain illegal drugs, and the criminal penalties as well. As well we discuss the personal reasons why they wanted to do the podcast, plus we find a way to have a lot of laughs.

Lava for Good’s The War on Drugs examines the actual cost of five decades of policy, policing, and persecution. The War on Drugs was never really about drugs; it was about control, and the series aims to expose this, shining a spotlight on how this so-called “war” impacts every aspect of our lives in ways both seen and unseen. The podcast will explore the politicization of public health policy; systemic racism and classism in the legislation and administration of criminal law; and how decriminalization and other alternatives could bring this fruitless “war” to an end.

Brandon Turner | Skateboarding Fame, Unresolved Trauma, Addiction, Sobriety, Skateboarding An Art? Jan 22, 2023
    Show notes

Why did I want to talk with Brandon Turner? Brandon Turner is a skateboard prodigy and addiction recovery coach, who is proving that age doesn't have to slow you down; it can actually make you better. Brandon has come a long way from his early years of substance abuse and over-the-top partying and recently partnered with San Diego-based rehab center Healthy Life Recovery to create a skate recovery program for individuals struggling with addiction. He also just broke a skating record, completing his biggest switch hardflip down Wallenberg at the age of 39.

Brandon and I talk about skate culture, the upsides, the downsides, and why he's chosen to dedicate his life to helping others within the skate community, all while bucking the long-held notion that skaters retire or slowly disappear after the age of 30. He shares how his unresolved childhood trauma which included finding out that who he thought was his mom, was his grandma and who he thought was his sister is his mom. This led to Brandon drowning out the emotional pain with alcohol and other substances. Eventually landing Brandon in prison.

Brandon Turner skateboarded with heavy hitters like Andrew Reynolds, Elissa Steamer, and Arto Saari who have all opened up about their addiction struggles. Many veterans with similar experiences are now using their passion for skateboarding as a point of reference for a more sober approach to life.

Why did I want to talk with Shaun Weiss, known for his roles in The Might Ducks as Goldberg, Heavy Weights, and more? Shaun's addiction became public headlines, his mug shot appeared on the news and celebrity media outlets. With an outcry of support to get Shaun help, which included new teeth and rehab. Why did I want to talk with Chris Van Vliet? Chris is a 4-time Emmy award-winning TV Host, Entertainment Reporter, and YouTuber based in Los Angeles, CA. Chris often speaks with those he interviews about gratitude. I wanted to ask Chris about the importance of gratitude from him, Intentional living, checking one's ego, accepting a NO and using it as a YES, plus finding ways to be innovative.

Chris has traveled the world reporting from events like the Oscars, Grammys, and the Cannes Film Festival. You may be familiar with the interviews that Chris posts on YouTube but to just call them “interviews” doesn’t seem fair because they are so much more than that. Chris dives deep into interesting topics with his trademark conversational approach that makes it feel like two old friends catching up. This is the case when it’s a wrestling superstar like John Cena, The Rock, or Hulk Hogan, or a Hollywood A-Lister like Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise, or Will Smith.
