    Show notes

JBD Team Talk: Creating and Honoring Boundaries Jun 04, 2021
    Show notes

We need boundaries to experience healthy loving relationships. Yet so many of us did not grow up in families that exhibited healthy boundaries. In fact, we may have experienced quite the opposite and not even understand what a boundary is. If your relationship is facing crisis, while the complexities are unique, you will almost always find an absence or breakdown of boundaries at the root of the problem.

When we practice healthy boundaries we are not attempting to control anyone else. Rather we are setting healthy parameters for what is acceptable behavior for those we are in relationship with. If we are in a relationship that does not feel good and as a result we feel hurt, angry, insecure, disempowered, we need to own our feelings and choices. If we blame the person we are in relationship with and need them to change in order for us to feel better, we have given over our power. We then see ourselves imprisoned by their actions as if we don't have the key to become free of the situation.

Someone does not make me feel or act a certain way. I must first own my feelings and actions before I can find my way to resolving the problem.

Listen in today and learn how to create and honor boundaries.

Life After Divorce: The Genius in All Our Emotions - And How They Guide Us May 28, 2021
    Show notes

The transition of divorce is ripe with surges of emotion and we often label the difficult ones as bad and to be avoided. Today's guest, Karla McLaren believes that emotions are possibly our greatest source of instinct, intelligence, and energy, that they are vital for thinking, healing, decision-making, learning, loving, and understanding others.

Listen in as we discuss how each of our emotions is essential, and how they each bring us the skills, energy, and intelligence we need in each situation. Karla shares how our emotions contain genius, and how to access them and discern when two emotions piggyback each other, ie. "panxiety" panic & anxiety.

We also chat about some of the most prevalent emotions experienced through divorce including anger, panic (different from fear), shame, anxiety, sadness, jealousy and grief. When we take the judgement out of even the hardest emotions, it gives us a new appreciation for their capacity to help heal and guide us.

Karla McLaren, M.Ed. is an award-winning author, social science researcher, and empathy pioneer. Her lifelong work focuses on her grand unified theory of emotions, which revalues even the most "negative" emotions and opens startling new pathways into self-awareness, effective communication, and healthy empathy. She is the author of The Language of Emotions, The Art of Empathy, and Embracing Anxiety, among other titles.

JBD Team Talks: How to Handle Reactions to Your Divorce May 07, 2021
    Show notes

Has anyone ever told you that marriage isn't perfect and you should try to stick it out? How about that you are ruining your children's lives if you go forward with the divorce? Are you no longer invited to certain gatherings or social events now that you are about to be or are single?

Deciding who to tell, how to tell and when to tell people when entering divorce is difficult. Dealing with people's reactions can be confusing and overwhelming.

It is important to remember that how people react to your divorce is about them and how you respond to those reactions is about you. This is a time to take good care of yourself and surround yourself with people whose energy and companionship buoy and comfort you and to limit, if not, avoid contact with people who project their fears and judgments onto you.

Today Rachel and I talk about how to discern who the healthy friends and loved ones in your life are and the value and benefits of creating an AllStar Support team to help you get through this most challenging time.
