    Growing in Faith Through Mental Health Struggles - Kali Lilienthal May 22, 2025

    Struggling with mental health can be part of being human in a broken world. Disciples of Christ have never been promised a trouble-free life. As many faithful believers, including Joni Eareckson Tada, can attest, grappling with depression and other mental health challenges, and even crises, is often part of the Christian walk. Our guest today, Joni and Friends staff member Kali Lilienthal, shares her story of how God has worked through medical and mental health professionals, community, Scripture, and prayer to turn her season of difficulty with depression and anxiety into one of deepening faith in Jesus. Don’t miss this encouraging conversation, which will remind you that you and your loved ones are never alone, even as you walk through dark valleys.

    When a broken neck upended her plans at age 17, Joni Eareckson Tada thought life was over. She fell into a deep depression. And over decades, Joni’s paralysis and pain often made her feel like giving up. But God’s presence and Word have always held her up when she might otherwise have fallen.

    Joni anchors her emotions to the Lord’s powerful promises, like the one found in Lamentations 3:21–23: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

    While depression sometimes lurks nearby for Joni, she invites God to illuminate the shadows, and her heart, with his bright truth. And she prays, “Let my life be a testament that ‘the precepts of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes’ (Psalm 19:8).”

    Relying on God’s Daily Bread Amid Cancer, Uncertainty, and Suffering with Roberta Dunn May 15, 2025

    If you are struggling with cancer, grief, or chronic pain, the journey can be arduous and seem unending. During her most difficult seasons, most recently coping with cancer, Roberta has found peace in words from the Lord’s Prayer, “…Give us this day our daily bread.”

    Today, as you or those close to you face hardships—especially lasting ones—spend time centering your heart by trusting God to provide the daily bread of his love and presence today. Acknowledge your need for God and remember his promise to work in all things (even pain) for his glory and your good.

    As Roberta encourages, hold out your hands, palms open, and pray: “Give me this day my daily bread.”

    Carole Reitsma, loving wife to her husband Scott, and devoted mom to her adult son Scotty (who is now an ordained minister), came to faith at a young age, and in the midst of ongoing abuse. Through it all, God has shepherded Carole, leading her to wholeness through grace, and into ministry to others. She has been a pastor alongside her husband in an inner-city church, and for more than twenty-five years has provided Christ-centered counseling as a licensed marriage and family therapist.     Thankfulness and Generosity Unlock the Good Life - Randy Alcorn Nov 28, 2024

    Jesus tells us our earthly possessions won’t last. We will outlive them, or they will outlive us. You can’t keep your things forever, and you can’t take them with you. However, according to Jesus, you can send your treasure on ahead. And that’s by giving of your treasure and thus setting your heart on the things that matter eternally. So how do you make the kind of investment Jesus recommends? Here are some places to start:

    • Help a disabled person by volunteering with Joni and Friends
    • Share the Gospel with someone who doesn’t know Jesus
    • Offer a meal to someone who is hungry

    As Randy puts it, “to open up your hands and freely give to help others is the key to a happy life.” So today, entrust your heart and your treasure to God, the Giver of all good gifts. Cling to Jesus, feasting on his promises and sharing them with others. Because every time you open your hands to give, or go out of your way to serve, you step into the good and happy life God designed you for.
