    Jackson’s Art Podcast

The ‘Jackson’s Art Podcast’ brings together ‘Ask An Artist’ and more ideas and conversations from across the Jackson’s Team. The Podcast explores what it means to make art through the voices of established artists and the materials they use. Every month, we share stories and expertise from those who create, be they contemporary artists or historical figures. To encourage curiosity and invite dialogue, we take listeners out of the gallery and into the spaces where art is made, shaped, and brought to life.

Our podcast consists of three distinct series: ‘Ask an Artist’, ‘The Matter of Colour’, and ‘Rivalries and Friendships in Art History’.

In ‘Ask an Artist’, Lisa Takahashi hosts insightful conversations with guest artists in their studios and at exhibitions and events, capturing both their practice and the atmosphere around their work.

‘The Matter of Colour’, presented by Evie Hatch, co-creator of Jackson’s Pigment Stories Book and online series, explores the fascinating histories of artists’ colours from antiquity to the present day.

In ‘Rivalries and Friendships in Art History’, Louise Reynolds and Evie Hatch uncover the clashes, romances, and companionships that shaped artists’ lives, revealing the human stories behind art history.

Ask an Artist - The Art of Travel: Interview with Mary-Anne Bartlett, from Art Safari Aug 22, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode, Peter and Tom interview Mary-Anne Bartlett - brilliant artist, much-loved tutor, and founder of Art Safari.

This episode is about all things "art tutoring" and "art holidays"; the ups, the downs, what it really takes to run a successful retreat and how to find your feet if you are thinking of becoming a tutor yourself.

Because when you get it right, combining art, great people, inspiring venues, and a sense of adventure is a truly special thing.

In the first part of the episode, Mary-Anne talks about her artistic and marketing background and the hard work involved in setting up and building a company. She shares some key business tips to do with marketing, planning, building relationships and the importance of doing a SWOT analysis on your business but overall, she talks about the joy she gets from tutoring and taking artists and students to beautiful and exciting places to paint.

In the second half of the episode, Peter, Tom and Mary-Anne talk more about what it takes to be an art tutor; how to start, how to develop, finding your style and the skill of teaching what you love, to other people.

In conclusion, Tom asks Mary-Anne about the abundance of art holiday providers and how students, and tutors, can weed out a "good" one from a "bad" one; what are the questions we should be asking, and how do we know who we can trust to work and travel with.

Ask An Artist - Getting Qualified; What are the options? Aug 08, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode, Tom and Peter discuss the different options open to creatives in terms of "getting qualified". With the rise of the internet over the past couple of decades, there has been an increase in the number of certificates, diplomas, courses, workshops and even degrees available - but what does each one entail, which ones are worth their salt and which ones do the art world actually care about?

In the first half of the episode, Peter talks about his own experience of going to university to study a Fine Art degree; what this can entail, include, facilities available and what you come out with at the end. They also discuss a one-year, foundation diploma, and share the experiences of colleagues and friends who have completed one of these.

In the second half of the episode, they discuss the myriad of less "formal" art courses, workshops and qualifications available - where these take place, how they might look and how you might choose the right one for you.
