Equipping you to successfully pursue the college of your dreams. I believe that the world needs every student to reach their full potential. College admittance shouldn’t hold you back. I’m an educator and Harvard grad who has been in your shoes. I designed this podcast to accompany the Ivy League Challenge (my online course) to support my listeners. Internships. Summer programs. Camps.

Most students assume these are the key to standing out in college admissions.

But what if some of the hardest opportunities to get… are actually some of the least valuable?

In this episode, I share a real clip from one of my Ivy League Challenge classes, where we break down a common question:

    Are internships actually worth it?

    You’ll learn:

    • Why most students misunderstand the value of internships and summer programs
    • The difference between exposure and real leverage
    • What actually makes an experience stand out on a college application
    • How to position yourself in rooms where people will mentor, support, and accelerate your growth

If you’ve been working hard but aren’t sure if you’re working on the right things, this episode will help you rethink your strategy.

Why Strong Students Still Miss the Mark in Supplemental Essays Mar 18, 2026
    Show notes

If you’ve been following this podcast, you already know that college admissions isn’t about being the most impressive student.

But what does a truly strong essay actually look like?

In this episode, Steve shares a clip from a live essay workshop with a current Yale student who also works in admissions. Together, they break down a real supplemental essay from a student admitted to Yale, Harvard, Caltech, and other top schools.

More importantly, they unpack the level of curiosity, depth, and engagement behind the essay, so you can understand what students need to develop before they ever start writing.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why strong essays reflect how a student thinks, not just what they’ve done
    • The difference between average essays and those that stand out at top schools
    • A simple framework for evaluating essay quality (Tier 1, 2, and 3)
    • What level of engagement students need to reach in their activities

Inside Yale Admissions: How to Stand Out Mar 10, 2026
    Show notes

What actually helps a student stand out to Ivy League admissions officers?

In this episode, Steve Gardner sits down with Bilal, a Yale student and student ambassador in the Yale Undergraduate Admissions Office, to discuss what makes a college application truly compelling.

Bilal shares his journey from Texas to Yale, including being admitted to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania, and explains why Yale ultimately felt like the right fit. The conversation explores how students can communicate their values, experiences, and intellectual curiosity in a way that resonates with admissions readers.

Steve and Bilal also discuss the upcoming Supplemental Essay Workshop, where students will analyze real essays from successful applicants and learn how strong activities and meaningful experiences translate into powerful application narratives.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Bilal approached the college admissions process
    • Why he ultimately chose Yale over other Ivy League options
    • What admissions readers are actually looking for in student essays
    • Why authentic intellectual curiosity matters more than trying to look “impressive”
    • How meaningful activities translate into compelling supplemental essays

This conversation offers an insider perspective from both a Yale student and admissions office ambassador, helping students and families better understand what selective colleges value.

Emerging Researchers Incubator with Saisha Pal Mar 02, 2026
    Show notes

Saisha Pal joins me to discuss her journey through the Emerging Researchers Incubator and how she transformed an interest in mental health and criminal justice into meaningful, real-world action.

Saisha shares how she moved learned that progress doesn’t come from waiting for the “perfect” plan, but from taking small, strategic steps forward. From reaching out to organizations and professors to refining her research focus, she reflects on the mindset shifts that helped her gain momentum.

    In This Episode, We Discuss:

    • Why waiting for confidence can delay meaningful action
    • How to approach outreach when organizations don’t respond
    • The importance of mentorship and academic alignment
    • Turning broad interests (mental health + criminal justice) into focused research questions
    • Why small steps create the clarity ambitious students are waiting for
    • What the Emerging Researchers Incubator actually teaches students about ownership and initiative

Saisha also talks candidly about the emotional side of the process, like dealing with silence after outreach, refining ideas publicly, and learning to pivot without losing motivation.

This conversation is especially valuable for students who:

    • Feel unsure how to begin a research or impact project
    • Want to combine multiple academic interests into one cohesive direction
    • Are navigating competitive college admissions and wondering how to stand out authentically

Bottlenecks to High Performance in Teens pt. 3: Fear Feb 26, 2026
    Show notes

    You’ve committed to aiming high.

    You’ve accepted the hard work.

So why does something still feel tense beneath the surface?

In this final episode of the series, we uncover the third bottleneck to high performance: fear. Specifically, the three forms that shape how ambitious teens approach college admissions:

    • Loss pain – What might I lose if I go all in?
    • Process pain – What will this journey cost me emotionally?
    • Outcome pain – What if I do everything right and it still isn’t enough?

You’ll learn why attaching your identity to a single admissions decision creates unnecessary pressure — and how shifting your focus from “Where will I get in?” to “Who am I becoming?” removes desperation while making you more competitive.

This episode ends with a powerful journaling exercise designed to help you confront fear and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Bottlenecks to High Performance in Teens pt. 2 Time Management Feb 16, 2026
    Show notes

Most teens don’t need more hours in the day, they need to stop losing the hours they already have.

In Part 2 of this 3-part series, we tackle the second bottleneck to high performance: time management.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why a checklist isn’t a strategy
    • How most students spend ⅓ to ⅔ of their day on autopilot
    • The one-page system I teach that helps students reclaim time, sharpen focus, and reduce overwhelm
    • Why small daily reflections unlock massive long-term progress

Bottlenecks to High Performance in Teens pt. 1 Feb 09, 2026
    Show notes

Why do some teens seem to effortlessly rise to the top—winning scholarships, earning Ivy League acceptances, and excelling in everything they do—while others with similar stats struggle to stand out?

In this first episode of a 3-part series, we uncover the real barriers to high performance—starting with the most overlooked: stamina.

    You’ll learn:

    • Why energy (not ambition!) is the true foundation of performance
    • How chronic sleep deprivation sabotages productivity, decision-making, and emotional control
    • The simple but powerful habits inside the Ivy League Health Challenge
    • How one overcommitted student made a single change, and everything got better

How My Students Got Into Yale and Other Top Schools Jan 13, 2026
    Show notes

What if college admissions isn’t about being more impressive, but about being more clear?

In this episode, I break down why so many hardworking, high-achieving students are rejected from top colleges, and what actually separates students who get admitted from those who don’t.

Drawing on recent early-decision results (including acceptances to Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Vanderbilt, plus $100,000 scholarships) I explain the hidden trap families fall into when they chase what they think admissions officers want.

    You’ll learn:

    • Why “doing more” often makes applications weaker, not stronger
    • The two questions admissions officers are really trying to answer
    • How the Impressiveness Trap creates noise instead of clarity
    • What successful students do differently to become “obvious admits”
    • Why starting earlier (8th–11th grade) dramatically reduces stress and increases options

I also share details about the upcoming live workshop, Hacking College Admissions, where you can learn how to build a clear, strategic plan that actually works. Register for free at TILC.to/janworkshop

If you want your teen to have real options. Confidence instead of panic, this episode is for you.

Supporting an Ambitious Teen with Karen DiNapoli Jan 05, 2026
    Show notes

What does it actually look like to support a highly driven teenager—without controlling, pushing, or burning them out?

In this episode, I sit down with Karen DiNapoli, mother of nationally ranked speaker and Ivy League Challenge alum Ava DiNapoli, to pull back the curtain on the parent side of an extraordinary student journey.

    Karen shares:

    • What it felt like when Ava first came home with an overwhelming, world-scale project idea
    • Why seeking outside guidance was essential—for both parent and child
    • How Ava’s first projects weren’t the final answer, and why that mattered
    • The moment Karen realized Ava had found her own core values, not her parents’
    • How internal motivation changed everything—from reminders and resistance to self-driven action
    • Why parents must learn when to step in—and when to step back

This conversation is a powerful reminder that:

    • You don’t need a perfect plan to start
    • Growth comes from action, reflection, and course-correction
    • The right support system helps teens become drivers of their own lives

How can I Make an Impact? Dec 29, 2025
    Show notes

In the last few episodes, we’ve explored the many ways students can lead through innovation, dialogue, and action.

We’ve seen, again and again, that when teens identify their core values and then make a meaningful impact aligned with those values… that’s the kind of leadership colleges simply cannot ignore.

But today, I want to zoom in on something even more foundational:

What does it actually mean to make an impact?

When adults talk about impact, it often sounds abstract, almost mysterious.

And for teens who are used to classroom projects that stay theoretical, the idea of solving real problems in the real world can feel overwhelming… even scary.

The students you’re about to hear from — Ava Dinapoli and Aavi Patel — felt all of that.

    They ran into roadblocks.

    They doubted themselves.

They had to figure things out step by step.

But they stayed committed to making the most meaningful impact they could.

And because of that persistence… their work is literally saving lives.

I hope you listen to their stories and feel as inspired as I am, not only because of the size of their impact, but because of the way they achieved it.

    They didn’t leap into greatness.

They moved forward one step at a time, exactly the way any young person can.

    Let’s listen in.
