It’s Not You, It’s Your Trauma – Trauma, PTSD, Abuse, Anxiety & Recovery – Joe Ryan

You became who you had to become to survive the family system that shaped you. In this podcast, I work through my own story, the patterns I carried into adulthood, and the parts of myself I learned to hide. I help you understand why you react the way you do, whether it shows up as shame, codependency, anger, the role you play in your family, or the false self you built just to get through it, and why changing any of it has been so hard. The details are different for all of us, but the feeling underneath is the same.

It’s Not You – It’s Your Inner Struggles

In a world obsessed with appearances and success, many hide their true selves behind a facade. The journey to authenticity is fraught with challenges, but embracing our vulnerabilities can lead to profound healing and self-acceptance.

    Overcoming Stigmas

Many individuals grapple with the stigma surrounding vulnerability and authenticity. Society often prioritizes superficial success—wealth, status, and appearances—over genuine emotional well-being. This pressure leads many to bury their insecurities, creating a facade that masks their true feelings of inadequacy and fear.

    The Struggle for Self-Acceptance

For those who have achieved outward success, the internal struggle can be even more pronounced. Despite their accomplishments, feelings of worthlessness can linger, leading to a relentless pursuit of validation through external achievements. This disconnect between self-perception and societal expectations can create a painful internal conflict.

    Facing the Truth

To begin the journey toward self-acceptance, individuals must confront their internal dialogues and the negative beliefs they hold about themselves. Acknowledging past mistakes and reframing self-talk can foster a more compassionate relationship with oneself. Embracing imperfections and recognizing the inherent value within can pave the way for a more authentic and fulfilling life.

    Three Important Takeaways

    • Societal pressures often lead individuals to hide their true selves behind a facade of success and perfection.

    • Self-acceptance requires confronting internal struggles and reframing negative self-talk into compassionate dialogue.

    • Embracing vulnerability and imperfections is essential for living an authentic and fulfilling life.

    Conclusion

The journey to self-acceptance is not easy, especially when societal expectations push us to present a polished exterior. However, by confronting our insecurities and embracing our vulnerabilities, we can begin to heal and cultivate a more authentic existence. It's essential to recognize that our worth is not defined by our achievements but by our ability to love and accept ourselves, flaws and all.

It’s Not You – It’s Your Inner Critic

Many of us carry the weight of past relationships, especially those with narcissistic individuals, which can lead to a harsh inner dialogue. Understanding this dynamic is crucial for breaking free from self-imposed limitations and fostering a healthier relationship with ourselves.

    The Cycle of Narcissism

Narcissistic relationships often leave deep emotional scars, leading individuals to internalize the critical voices of their past. This episode delves into how we can become our own worst critics, mirroring the judgment we experienced from narcissistic figures in our lives. The discussion emphasizes that everyone has some level of narcissism, and recognizing this can help us understand our own behaviors and choices in relationships.

    Breaking Free from Self-Criticism

As individuals begin to recognize the patterns of self-judgment, they can start to reclaim their independence and self-worth. The episode highlights the importance of acknowledging the negative tapes that play in our minds and the necessity of replacing them with positive affirmations. By doing so, we can foster a more compassionate relationship with ourselves, allowing for personal growth and healing.

    Building a Positive Self-Image

To move forward, it’s essential to focus on the positive aspects of ourselves and our lives. The conversation encourages listeners to identify and nurture their strengths, talents, and passions. By shifting the focus from self-criticism to self-acceptance, individuals can break the cycle of unhealthy relationships and cultivate a more fulfilling life.

    Three Important Takeaways

    • Recognizing the patterns of narcissism in relationships can help individuals understand their own behaviors and choices.

    • Replacing negative self-talk with positive affirmations is crucial for building self-worth and independence.

    • Focusing on personal strengths and passions can lead to healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life.

    Conclusion

Breaking free from the grip of narcissistic relationships requires a deep understanding of how we treat ourselves. By acknowledging the internalized criticism and shifting our focus to self-acceptance and positivity, we can heal and foster healthier connections with ourselves and others. The journey may be challenging, but it is essential for personal growth and emotional freedom.

It’s Not You – It’s YourEmotions and Past Experiences

The journey through emotional turmoil and suicidal thoughts can be overwhelming, yet it is possible to confront and process these feelings to find strength and healing. By facing the pain head-on, individuals can discover resilience and a deeper understanding of themselves, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.

Navigating the Stigma of Suicidal Thoughts
Suicidal thoughts and feelings are often shrouded in stigma, leaving many to suffer in silence. The fear of judgment and ridicule can prevent individuals from seeking help or sharing their experiences. This episode addresses the importance of breaking this silence and encourages open conversations about mental health struggles. By sharing personal experiences, we can foster understanding and compassion for those who are battling these thoughts.

    The Weight of Emotional Paralysis
The speaker reflects on their own journey, recalling the early memories of suicidal thoughts that began in childhood. The struggle to cope with overwhelming emotions often leads to a cycle of avoidance, whether through substance use or relentless busyness. This emotional paralysis can feel insurmountable, leaving individuals feeling trapped and disconnected from their true selves. Recognizing this pattern is the first step toward healing.

    Facing the Darkness
A pivotal moment in the speaker's journey came when they chose to confront their feelings rather than escape them. By allowing themselves to sit with the pain, they discovered a profound strength that had been buried beneath years of avoidance. This experience highlights the importance of facing one’s emotions, no matter how daunting, as a means to reclaim one’s life and sense of purpose.

    Building Resilience Through Vulnerability
The process of healing is not linear, and it requires patience and self-compassion. The speaker emphasizes that thoughts and feelings do not define one’s identity. By embracing vulnerability and allowing oneself to feel deeply, individuals can cultivate resilience and a renewed sense of self. This journey may be challenging, but it ultimately leads to a more authentic and empowered existence.

The Journey Through Layers of Healing

In the pursuit of emotional well-being, individuals often find themselves navigating through layers of trauma and pain. This journey, while challenging, can lead to profound healing and self-discovery. By confronting the root causes of their struggles, people can begin to reclaim their lives and create a sense of peace and freedom within themselves.

    The Payoff of Inner Work
Engaging in the difficult process of addressing trauma and emotional pain can feel overwhelming. Many individuals mask their discomfort for years, living in denial of their true feelings. However, the journey of self-exploration reveals a significant payoff for doing this hard work. By peeling back the layers of their experiences, individuals can uncover the root causes of their pain and begin to heal.

    Facing the Layers
The process of healing is not linear; it involves confronting various layers of trauma that have been buried over time. Each layer represents a different aspect of one’s emotional landscape, and tackling them one at a time can be both daunting and liberating. As individuals work through these layers, they often find themselves feeling lighter and more at peace, even if the journey is fraught with discomfort.

    The Importance of Self-Compassion
Throughout this journey, self-compassion plays a crucial role. It is essential to recognize that healing takes time and that it is okay to take breaks when needed. The process of self-discovery can be intense, and allowing oneself the grace to step back and recharge is vital. This self-care enables individuals to return to their healing work with renewed energy and perspective.

    Creating Space for Growth
As individuals confront their fears and emotional pain, they begin to create space within themselves for growth and transformation. This newfound space allows individuals to explore life beyond fear and embrace their true selves. By actively facing their fears, they can cultivate a life that reflects their authentic desires and aspirations.

    Embracing the Journey
Ultimately, the journey through trauma and healing is deeply personal and unique to each individual. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. However, the rewards of this journey—freedom, peace, and self-acceptance—are invaluable. By embracing the process, individuals can create a life that is truly their own, free from the constraints of fear and past programming.

In the journey of self-discovery and healing, individuals often find themselves grappling with the weight of past traumas and the need for external validation. The path to empowerment lies in recognizing that true healing begins within, requiring a commitment to face uncomfortable emotions and take responsibility for one's own feelings and actions.

    The Power of Blame
Blame can be a tempting refuge, allowing individuals to shift responsibility away from themselves and onto others. However, this act of blaming not only disempowers us but also reinforces a victim mentality. By relinquishing our power to others, we become trapped in a cycle of helplessness, waiting for apologies and validation that may never come. The journey toward healing requires us to reclaim that power and recognize that the apology we seek must come from within.

    The Challenge of Accountability
Taking accountability for our lives can be daunting, especially when we have not been shown how to do so. Many individuals find themselves stuck in familiar patterns, often avoiding confrontation and suppressing their own needs to maintain relationships. This adaptation can lead to a profound sense of abandonment of self. To break free from these cycles, we must learn to trust ourselves and take ownership of our feelings, desires, and actions.

    Sitting with Painful Emotions
One of the most significant hurdles in the healing process is the fear of confronting painful emotions. Many individuals struggle to sit with their feelings, often resorting to avoidance as a coping mechanism. However, true healing requires us to face these emotions head-on, just as physical exercise does. Just as we start small in our physical fitness journey, we must also begin with manageable increments in our emotional work. Gradually increasing our capacity to sit with discomfort can lead to profound breakthroughs.

    Rebuilding from Within
As we navigate the complexities of our emotions, we must also learn to parent ourselves. This involves nurturing our inner child and providing the compassion and understanding that may have been lacking in our past. By acknowledging our experiences and validating our feelings, we can begin to rebuild our lives on a foundation of truth rather than fear. This process is not linear; it comes in waves, requiring patience and self-forgiveness as we learn to embrace our authentic selves.

The journey of healing is a deeply personal and often challenging process that requires individuals to confront their past, embrace their emotions, and take responsibility for their lives. By fostering self-compassion and accountability, one can break free from the chains of childhood programming and emotional paralysis, ultimately leading to a more empowered and fulfilling life.

It’s Not You – It’s Your Inner Struggles

In a world where distractions abound, many find themselves trapped in cycles of numbing and avoidance. The journey to self-discovery and emotional freedom begins with confronting uncomfortable feelings and embracing the parts of ourselves we often hide away.

    The Cycle of Numbing

Many individuals find themselves stuck in a cycle of numbing their feelings through various distractions, such as social media or substance use. This avoidance leads to a lack of presence in both the external world and within oneself. To break free from this cycle, it is essential to recognize the need for change and to take small, actionable steps toward a more fulfilling life.

    Embracing Uncomfortable Feelings

Facing uncomfortable emotions is a crucial part of personal growth. Instead of avoiding these feelings, one must learn to sit with them and allow them to surface. This process creates space for positive emotions to fill the void left by negativity. Acknowledging and experiencing these feelings is vital for moving forward and preventing them from becoming overwhelming.

    Self-Acceptance and Integration

Self-acceptance involves recognizing and embracing all parts of oneself, including those that are often hidden or deemed unacceptable. By owning these aspects, individuals can integrate them into their lives, leading to a more authentic existence. The journey to self-discovery requires vulnerability and a willingness to confront fears, ultimately allowing for a more balanced and fulfilling life.

    Three Important Takeaways

    • Numbing out through distractions keeps individuals stuck and prevents personal growth.

    • Confronting and experiencing uncomfortable feelings is essential for emotional healing and creating space for positivity.

    • Self-acceptance and integration of all aspects of oneself lead to a more authentic and fulfilling life.

    Conclusion

To truly transform your life, it is essential to confront the uncomfortable feelings that you often avoid. By embracing all parts of yourself, including the darker aspects, you can create a more authentic existence. The journey of self-discovery is challenging but ultimately rewarding, leading to a life that is not only more fulfilling but also free from the constraints of past programming.

In a world where we often feel the need to conform to societal expectations, the journey to uncover our true selves can be both daunting and liberating. This exploration delves into the complexities of our emotional landscapes, revealing how childhood experiences shape our identities and the importance of embracing our authentic selves.

    Understanding the False Self
From a young age, many of us learn to adapt to our caregivers' expectations, often at the expense of our true emotions and identities. This false self emerges as a survival mechanism, allowing us to navigate the complexities of childhood environments that may be fraught with emotional turmoil. The instinct to please those who care for us can lead to a disconnection from our authentic selves, creating a façade that we carry into adulthood.

    The Pain of Repression
As we grow, the emotions we were taught to suppress—anger, sadness, and fear—can manifest as deep-seated shame and self-doubt. This repression not only hinders our emotional growth but also perpetuates a cycle of unhappiness. The struggle to confront these feelings can feel overwhelming, as they are often tied to our earliest experiences of love and acceptance. Acknowledging this pain is the first step toward healing and reclaiming our true identities.

    Peeling Back the Layers
The process of unmasking our true selves involves peeling back the layers of our false identities. This journey is not linear; it requires patience and self-compassion. Each layer we uncover brings us closer to understanding the root of our fears and the patterns that have governed our lives. By confronting our addictions and distractions, we can begin to face the emotions we have long avoided, allowing for a more authentic existence.

    Embracing the Journey
The path to authenticity is fraught with challenges, but it is also filled with moments of clarity and hope. As we learn to sit with our discomfort and embrace our emotions, we cultivate resilience and strength. This journey is not about achieving perfection but rather about accepting ourselves in all our complexity. By integrating the darker parts of our psyche, we can move toward a more holistic understanding of who we are.

    Finding Freedom in Authenticity
Ultimately, the journey to authenticity is about liberation—freeing ourselves from the constraints of our past and the roles we have played. It is a call to honor our true selves and to recognize that we no longer need to seek validation from others. By embracing our full range of emotions and experiences, we can step into a life that is genuinely ours, filled with authenticity and self-acceptance.

    It’s Not You – It’s Your Pause

In a world suddenly forced to stop, the relentless pace of doing gives way to the unfamiliar act of being. This unexpected pause levels the playing field and creates space for reflection, reconnection, and rediscovery. What emerges is not just survival, but an opportunity to examine life without the constant distraction of motion.

    Embracing the Forced Stillness

Life had become a constant race to catch up—schedules, obligations, endless tasks—leaving no room for introspection or rest. The global pause removed the noise, revealing how much energy was spent avoiding stillness. For many, this break has felt like a gift disguised as hardship, providing time to breathe, reflect, and finally catch up with themselves.

    Finding Peace in Acceptance

When external activity vanished, internal discomfort rose to the surface—fear, emptiness, questions of identity. Yet accepting the uncontrollable freed energy for what could be controlled: kindness, presence, growth. The pause highlighted what truly matters—human connection, health, and authenticity—over status, accumulation, and productivity. Worry offered no protection; acceptance created space for peace.

    Reconnecting Through Being

With no escape into busyness, attention turned inward. Time with family deepened, simple skills were learned, quiet observation revealed neglected parts of self. Being replaced doing, creating room for genuine connection and self-discovery. The pause showed that when motion stops, the self can finally be seen and explored without distraction.

    Three Important Takeaways

    • Constant doing is often avoidance; stillness forces buried feelings to surface and be faced.
    • The pause is a hidden gift—forced quiet creates space to reconnect with self, family, and true priorities beyond productivity.
    • Acceptance brings more peace than resistance; embracing what cannot be changed allows energy to flow toward presence, growth, and human connection.

    Conclusion

A global pause that halts the world’s momentum can feel like profound loss—routines vanish, plans dissolve, tragedy touches many. Yet in the forced stillness lies a rare chance to stop running and simply exist. When doing ends, being begins: deeper presence with loved ones, rediscovery of neglected interests, quiet observation of self. The tragedy remains real, but so does the opportunity to realign priorities—placing life, health, and connection above accumulation and status. What emerges from this quiet is not just survival, but a clearer sense of who we are when the world stops demanding we prove our worth through endless motion. That rediscovered authenticity is the hidden gift of the pause.

    It’s Not You – It’s Your Role

Family systems often lock individuals into rigid roles that maintain balance at the cost of personal authenticity. Breaking free means stepping out of the assigned character, facing judgment from those who depend on the predictability, and choosing genuine selfhood over scripted harmony. The path to freedom begins when belonging no longer outweighs living truthfully.

    Family Systems Enforce Predictable Roles

Family dynamics function like scripted sitcoms with fixed characters and storylines. Each member plays a part to keep the system stable. Deviating from the role disrupts the entire balance and triggers resistance from others who depend on the predictability.

Changing Your Role Disrupts the System

When one person refuses to play their assigned part, the entire family system feels threatened. The change acts as a mirror, forcing others to confront their own roles and discomfort. Judgment and condemnation often follow as a defense against self-reflection.

Fear of Disappointing Others Keeps People Stuck

The obligation to maintain family harmony creates internal conflict. Staying in the role preserves acceptance but sacrifices authenticity. Leaving the role risks disapproval, but continuing guarantees ongoing misery and inauthenticity.

    Three Important Takeaways

    • Family roles are scripts, not identities; recognizing this allows you to choose authenticity over performance.
    • Changing your role invites judgment because your growth exposes others' stuck patterns; the disapproval is their defense, not your failure.
    • Freedom requires honoring internal truth over external approval; listening to what feels right inside is the only way to escape lifelong role-playing.

    Conclusion

Family systems can trap individuals in roles that feel safe but suffocate authenticity. Breaking free invites discomfort, judgment, and loss of predictability, yet it opens the door to a life aligned with true self rather than scripted expectations. The process demands courage to prioritize internal truth over external approval, small consistent steps to redefine identity, and acceptance that not everyone will follow or understand the change. Over time, the system’s hold weakens, judgment loses power, and a more honest, expansive existence emerges—one where you no longer have to perform to be loved or accepted. That is the quiet revolution of choosing yourself.

Learned Helplessness: The Invisible Prison You Can Walk Out Of

    It’s Not You – It’s Your Helplessness

Years of trauma and repeated failure can condition a person to accept pain as inevitable, even when escape is possible. What feels like permanent powerlessness is often learned helplessness—an identity formed in childhood that keeps the prison door open but convinces the mind it’s locked. Breaking free begins with small, deliberate steps outside familiar patterns of suffering.

Learned Helplessness Locks the Mind, Not the Body
Trauma and persistent failure teach people to expect and accept pain without resistance. Even when circumstances change and escape becomes available, the conditioned belief in powerlessness keeps them trapped in suffering.

The Comfort of Familiar Pain Prevents Change
Pain and helplessness become familiar and therefore “safe.” The absence of suffering creates discomfort and guilt because joy and freedom feel foreign. This fear of the unknown maintains the cycle of avoidance and self-sabotage.

Small Steps Outside the Pattern Break the Loop
Change starts with tiny actions that feel uncomfortable or undeserved—walking a trail, trying a new hobby, pushing past internal resistance. Each step expands the world and weakens the grip of old conditioning.

    Internal Motivation Replaces External Fixes
When external distractions and addictions no longer relieve pain, the system forces stillness. Sitting with discomfort and exploring new experiences rebuilds the ability to feel joy from within rather than chasing temporary relief.

    The 3 Most Important Lessons

Lesson 1: Learned helplessness is reversible but requires small, consistent action. The prison door is open; the mind must be retrained to walk through it.

Lesson 2: Familiar pain feels safer than unknown freedom. The fear of joy and the guilt of not suffering keep people stuck in old patterns.

Lesson 3: Real change begins with discomfort, not comfort. Pushing past internal resistance through new experiences rebuilds agency and inner contentment.

    Conclusion
Learned helplessness turns trauma into identity, convincing people they deserve and must endure pain even when escape is possible. Yet every small step outside familiar suffering—every new trail walked, every pattern broken—chips away at the invisible walls. The process is slow, uncomfortable, and often feels ridiculous at first, but it reclaims the power that was conditioned away. Over time, the world expands, joy arrives without needing external fixes, and the prison becomes just a memory. Freedom isn’t found in one dramatic moment; it’s built through persistent, quiet courage to do what once felt impossible.
