    About today’s guest producer:

Salvatore Avallone’s father created Villa Matilde in the 1960’s after spending over 10 years of painstaking research to locate and identify the few remaining grape vines of the original strain that made the famous Falernum wine of Roman times. His father, Francesco Paolo, was a lawyer, a lifelong student of the Roman Empire and a professor of Roman Law at the University of Naples. He and his friends from the Dept of Agriculture at the University of Naples conducted an “ampelographical” study of the vines in all the small farms in the Caserta region where the famed Falernum wines had been grown. But the phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800’s had wiped out the vines – all but a very few. The friends discovered 15 vines – 10 red (Aglianico and Piedirosso) and 5 white (Falanghina). With this small but precious start, the Avallone family embarked on a journey to create a modern expression of the greatest wine of ancient Rome, the Falerno del Massico.

Ep. 1035 Elise Rialland | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon Aug 08, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1035 Marc Millon interviews Elise Rialland of Casale del Giglio in this episode of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon on the Italian Wine Podcast.

    More about today’s winery:

Casale del Giglio has always been motivated by the desire to produce top quality, fairly-priced wines in a swathe of land, the Agro Pontino, little known until recently for its viticutural potential. The aim of the experimentation programme, conducted in 1985 on 180 acres of vineyard, has been, and still is, twofold:

first to favour those cultivars which, by their nature and through targeted management, have proved to interact most successfully with the soil and climate of the territory; second to rediscover and restore the status of native vines once thought to be obsolete, such as Biancolella di Ponza, Bellone di Anzio, Cesanese di Olevano Romano and Pecorino di Accumoli.

Today, I am excited to interview a friend and one of the smartest fellas working in wine, Darren Oemcke. A straight-shooting Australian, Darren has experience in all walks of the wine world: engineering, production, technology, marketing, mentoring, teaching, whew…and in his spare time, he still manages to catch a few waves. In this episode, we settle in for a good ol’ Antipodean chat about what we love in wine, what we’d loved to see change, and even what we can learn from the surfing community. Let’s get into it!

    More about today’s guest:

Dr. Darren Oemcke is the co-founder of Hydra Consulting. Hydra works with businesses of any size to build capacity through process improvements, integration of technology and building customer relationships. When he’s not helping businesses reshape themselves, you’ll find Darren surfing any break he can find. As the president of Surfing South Australia, he’s committed to ensuring the future of surfing through events, competitions and education.

In 2021 Darren was appointed as an independent chair of Riverland Wine, writes for Australian Wine Business magazine, consults to large and small wine businesses, start-ups and incubator/accelerator programmes, and speaks globally on everything from tech to sustainability to building better business.
