Ep. 1454 Laura Diaz Munoz | Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo Jul 03, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1454 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Laura Diaz.

    More about Laura Diaz:

Born in Spain, Laura grew up sharing sips of wine with her father while watching the fishing boats during their family vacations in the North of Spain. Her first sip of Albariño solidified her love of wines and her first winemaking internship solidified her future as a winemaker. After completing her post postgraduate in enology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid Laura started her career in La Mancha and worked in different wine regions in Spain. A few years later, Laura left Spain and traveled to New Zealand and Chile learning as much as she could about winemaking and the influence of terroir in different wine regions. Finally, Laura took a job in the Napa Valley. For over a decade, Laura has been making wine in Napa Valley as the Associate Winemaker for Cardinale, Lokoya, Mt Brave, La Jota, and Winemaker for Galerie. Laura joined Ehlers Estate as Winemaker and General Manager in 2018. For her, winemaking is a process of discovery, where minimal intervention is done in the cellar but the process of understanding the needs of each individual vine in the vineyard never ends. “My greatest aspiration is to make wines which are reflective of the unique fruit and minerality character of the Ehlers Estate vineyard, with long finishes and distinct textures that are difficult to forget on the palate.”

    Guest Bio - Marco Biscardo

Marco and his sister Sabrina are the fourth generation in the wine business. In 1930 their grandfather founded the Biscardo winery in the Bardolino area, close to Verona in Veneto region. At twenty, their father Augusto began to sell the typical wines of the Verona area like Amarone, Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Soave, first of all in Italy and then in Germany.

At that time the German market became more and more important so he spent more time abroad. In Germany at the same time three other wines had success: the Chianti, Lambrusco and Montepulciano. So, the Biscardo Winery decided to buy Montepulciano as BULK WINE, bottled and sold them.

When their grandfather, the founder of the Winery, passed away, their father decided to leave the Biscardo Winery to his brother and cousin and build his own distribution company for Germany.

Marco and Sabrina after they graduated, began to work with their father on the distribution of wines from 14 Italian wineries: from different regions from north to south of Italy.

They began to travel in Italy learning the production areas, the philosophies of the individual wineries and the quality of the wines, but at the same time, they travelled a lot to Germany and other countries for the export of the wines of these wineries.

In 2002 Sabrina; Marco and their father made a big investment and bought the Fosso Corno estate in Abruzzo. Three years later, their father Augusto passed away without seeing the first harvest, but Sabrina and Marco decided to continue their vision and mission which is the production of a particular, quality Montepulciano wines.

Ep. 1409 Daniel Pfitscher | Italian Trade Agency Masterclasses In Germany Jul 01, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1409; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Dusseldorf, Germany. Today Joy Livingston interviews Daniel Pfitscher

Stevie Kim and her team travelled to Dusseldorf, Germany this March to collaborate with ITA, the Italian Trade Agency. ITA was organizing some incredible Masterclasses featuring the best wines Italy has to offer. Each masterclass was led by the Master Sommelier Eros Teboni (awarded Best Sommelier Worldwide in 2018), and they wanted us there to document the amazing 3 days!

Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days.

    About today’s guest and winery:

Daniel is the Conductor, sales wizard, and marketing guru at the Pfitscher winery. In 2011 when their parents decided to move away from the village centre of Montagna to set up a new winery, their main concern was to ensure that the premises were firmly embedded in their natural surroundings whilst retaining maximum functionality. Despite, or perhaps because of its straight lines, the building was intended to sink into the background, leaving the stage clear for the real stars: nature, the landscape and... the wine. Simple shapes and a predominantly black colour scheme ensure that these leading actors are never out of sight. Through its enormous window facade, the tasting room, offers breath-taking views of the South Tyrolean lowlands and the surrounding mountains. In the cellar, a trail of colours leads the way, ending with dark blue in the Blauburgunder (Pinot noir) cellar. Definitely a must-see!

    Ep. 1449 What Pricing Communicates | wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Jun 29, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to episode 1449, What Pricing Communicates (for Fine Wine) with Peter Yeung

This is the Wine2Wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide.

    About today’ session:

Pricing, for fine and luxury wines, is always a complex topic. Whereas for more “commodity” or everyday wines, where pricing is a function of the what market will bear, pricing for fine wines has many embedded messages in it. It communicates where the brand is positioned (or desires to be positioned) in a regional and global market. It sends a message to consumers about the winery’s value proposition to them. In this session, we will explore both the art and science of fine / luxury wine pricing and what pricing communicates to the marketplace.

    About the Speakers

Peter Yeung (pronounced “young”) is a leading wine business consultant, developing strategic business plans and innovative marketing plans for the wine industry.
