Ep. 1603 Bilena Settepani | The Next Generation Oct 15, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1603 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Bilena Settepani this week on The Next Generation.

The Next Generation where Victoria Cece interviews young Italian wine people, 30 and under, shaking up the wine scene.

    More about today’s guest

Bilena Settepani is a talented young entrepreneur, and pastry chef, raised in a family of both bakers and restaurateurs, and from a young age, she was immersed in the world of food and hospitality. Bilena’s first word was “Dabo” which in Ethiopia means bread; many of our patrons have seen Bilena work every position from starting as in her early teen’s maître d, bussing, waiting tables, bartender, manager and more as she studied and even on the side as she started a career in fashion. When the pandemic hit she dropped everything and quit her job to step up and take care of the family's business while the Settepani family like everyone else was facing hardship in all aspects of life. Bilena's passion for pastry began at a young age, as she would spend time at both locations but always trying to get her hands on the action and was always curious to try things. Her love for food goes beyond the kitchen as she also runs our monthly classes. After receiving a degree at High Point University, she attended Institute of Culinary Education where she honed her skills and developed a deep appreciation for the art of pastry making. After graduation, she worked in some of the top pastry kitchens in the world, gaining valuable experience and perfecting her craft.

Bilena is the vision behind the brand at Settepani, she overseas out marketing and works side by side with Chef Nino to constantly evolve to pastry program at Settepani, where she is responsible for creating the restaurant's dessert menu, managing our e - commerce, and overseeing the pastry line of products. She brought a fresh and innovative perspective to the business, when she decided to help her family bring Settepani forward instead of folding when times get tough. She has helped to elevate the Settepani brand and expand its reach beyond the local community, and continues to find ways to give back to our community.

Ep. 1601 Giovanni Casati Of Costa Arènte | On The Road With Stevie Kim Oct 14, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1601 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today she is at Costa Arènte in Valpantena (Valpolicella), speaking with Giovanni Casati, chief winemaker.

    More about today’s guest

Costa Arènte is located in the village of Romagnano at an elevation of 250 meters above sea level, surrounded by vineyards on three sides. From the farmhouse, a 35-hectare estate with 17 hectares planted with the Verona Pergola and Guyot training systems, one’s gaze wanders across the landscapes of the Valpantena and among the peaks of the Lessini Mountains. For the local people, we are “La Costa”, which means “the hillside” in the local dialect and refers to the most valuable plots of land. The article “La” – “The” – is a seal of quality, because this hill is a benchmark for the entire area. Over the years, while passing through the traditions and agricultural transformations of the area, La Costa has always maintained a great rural vocation for the bounty of its land and its strategic position. If it could talk, who knows what tales the old mulberry tree would tell as it looks over the valley from the main farmyard.

Ep. 1598 From Serial Killer To The World's Hottest Wine Trend | wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Oct 12, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1598, From Serial Killer to the World's Hottest Wine Trend with Alice Feiring and Felicity Carter. This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast.

wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals gather to develop and expand their wine business worldwide.

    Abstract:

In Alice Feiring’s new memoir, “To Fall in Love, Drink This”, she does what she has become famous for, linking wine with the shocking, surprising and inconceivable. Case in point: In this book we see her escaping from a serial killer, spending time in one of America’s most notorious prisons, visiting concentration camps, and telling off famous spirit producers. Yes, there’s joy, loss of unconditional love, Nina Simone and dirt collected in jars as an incredible expression of terroir. It is her coming-of-age story linked to her subject, wine, how she has championed the wines now taking the world by storm. Heralded editor and master storyteller, Felicity Carter is charged with interviewing Feiring. In the session, Carter will explore what it takes to overcome wine media controversy, tell a good wine story about wine, and champion the underdogs until the wine world sits up and takes notice. Come along and find out the power of storytelling – and why the wine world needs to embrace greater transparency if it wants to resonate with modern drinkers.

More about today’s speaker: Alice Feiring

Journalist and essayist Alice Feiring was proclaimed “the queen of natural wines” by the Financial Times. Feiring is a recipient of a coveted James Beard Award for wine journalism, among many others. She has written for newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time, AFAR, World of Fine Wine, and the beloved winezine, Noble Rot. She has also appeared frequently on public radio. Her previous books include Natural Wine for the People, Dirty Guide to Wine, For the Love of Wine, Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally, and her controversial 2008 debut, The Battle for Wine & Love or How I Saved the World from Parkerization. Alice lives in New York and publishes the authoritative natural wine newsletter, The Feiring Line.
