Ep. 2739 A Bite-Sized History of Italy by Dr Danielle Callegari | Book Club with Richard Hough Jul 17, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome to Book Club and Episode 2739 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Richard Hough. In this episode, Richard is in conversation with professor of Italian wine and culture, Dr Danielle Callegari, author of (amongst other things) “A Bite-Sized History of Italy: Tales of the Roman Empire, Renaissance, and Republic.”

This conversation explores Danielle’s Italian ancestry, her career as an academic, the importance of Dante to Italy’s linguistic identity, the role of food and wine in shaping Italy’s cultural identity, the beer before bread hypothesis, “carbonaragate” and other Italian food controversies, and Italy’s evolving culinary habits.

Further reading and other resources mentioned in the conversation:

    • “Dante’s Gluttons: Food and Society in Medieval Italian Literature” by Dr Danielle Callegari
    • “Drunk” by Dr Edward Slingerland
    • “Tracing one delicious snack around the Mediterranean showed me that modern borders are absurd” by Federico De Blasi, https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jun/26/chickpea-snacks-mediterranean-migration-cultural-exchange-europe-africa

    • “This Italian Wine Paradise Is More Than Just a Pretty Coastline” by Danielle Callegari, https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/travel/sardinia-food-wine-culture/

The Book Review by Richard Hough:

Dr Danielle Callegari is a renowned academic in the field of medieval Italian literature, which explains the intellectual depth and rigour that underpins “A Bite-Sized History of Italy: Tales of the Roman Empire, Renaissance, and Republic.” Callegari takes us on a fascinating historical journey to explain how food became the defining characteristic of Italian national identity, tackling the many myths, legends and (culinary) obscenities along the way. From The Iliad and the Odyssey to pineapple on pizza, A Bite-Sized History of Italy is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the past, present and future of Italy’s remarkable relationship with its food and wine.

    About today’s guest:

Danielle Callegari (Ph.D., New York University) is Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian at Dartmouth College and Communications Director for the Dante Society of America. They discuss the winery's pioneering role as one of the first to export Aglianico del Vulture beyond Italy, the influence of the volcanic terroir and old vines (some up to 80 years old), and the unique characteristics of harvesting Aglianico on Mount Vulture. The conversation also highlights the estate's flagship wines, Basilicata's rich gastronomic traditions, and classic local pairings, including the iconic peperone crusco.

Erminia D'Angelo, along with her brother Rocco, represents the fourth generation of D'Angelo, one of the historical wineries in the heart of Vulture in Basilicata, always involved in producing Aglianico del Vulture. The winery was born in 1920. The family history goes hand in hand with the success of Aglianico del Vulture, which has become a symbol of Basilicata.

She grew up playing between barrels and barriques, and her passion for this world grew with her. After earning a degree in Economics and Business Management—specializing in Corporate Finance—at LUISS , she immediately returned to the family business to work alongside her brother Rocco, the winemaker, following the premature death of their father, Lucio, in 2007—from whom she inherited her passion for the world of wine. Ep. 2731 The Chocolate of Modica with Simone Sabaini of Sabadì | Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon Jul 07, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome to episode 2731 of the Italian Wine Podcast and episode 251 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. In this episode, Marc speaks with Simone Sabaini, founder of Sabadì, about the history, craftsmanship, and global rise of Modica chocolate. They explore how Spanish influence shaped Sicily's unique chocolate-making tradition, what distinguishes Modica chocolate from conventional chocolate, how Simone has elevated its quality while preserving tradition, the parallels between perfume and chocolate making, the art of infused chocolate, and why Modica chocolate has earned international recognition.

    More about today’s guest:

Simone Sabaini, a former financier from Verona, moved to Modica to redefine the quality of local chocolate by founding Sabadì. His vision transformed the traditional "flaws" of Modica chocolate into excellence: cold-processed without added cocoa butter, his chocolate is shiny, compact, and long-lasting on the palate. For 15 consecutive years, Sabadì has been awarded the "Tavoletta d’Oro" for "Best Modica Chocolate."

In 2018, he opened the world’s first chocolate aging cellar, where cocoa naturally absorbs notes of tobacco, tea, spices, or resins. Available in over 30 countries and top luxury department stores, Sabadì has boutiques in Modica, Syracuse, Noto, and Paris. Sabaini is also active in the agricultural sector, producing organic citrus drinks, natural Vermouth, and Bitters through his farms, Madre and Naturale.

Ep. 2730 Wine Storytelling That Drives Consumer Engagement with Heather Daenitz | Masterclass US Wine Market Jul 06, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 2730 of the Italian Wine Podcast. In this episode, Barbara Fitzgerald speaks with Heather Daenitz, founder of Craft & Cluster, about why today's wine consumers connect more with stories that fit their lives than with brand origin stories. They discuss how wineries can create more authentic marketing by empowering creators, simplifying their messaging, and building trust through consistent storytelling.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Consumers care less about a winery's origin story and more about how wine fits into their lives.
    • The most effective wine storytelling comes through trusted creators and customers—not the brand itself.
    • Great storytelling simplifies a brand's message instead of making it more complex.
