    Instructional Coaching with Ms. B

Welcome to Instructional Coaching with Ms. B, where we believe that every teacher deserves a coach, and every coach does too!

I’m Chrissy Beltran, an elementary teacher who became a coach and I had to create my own coaching program that worked. Now I teach coaches how to design their coaching programs, build a school-wide action plan, and use differentiated strategies to support teachers. Plus, I’ve got a special spot in my heart for literacy coaches!

This podcast will cover instructional coaching strategies including modeling, co-teaching, and observations, coaching cycles, and more! We’ll also talk about how to coach resistant teachers, how to establish yourself as a coach and define your role, set goals, manage your time, facilitate PLCs, and more! We chat with instructional coaches, principals, school leaders, and researchers!

    8. Eight Tips for Digging into Data Mar 07, 2020
    Show notes

Data, data, data. Are all instructional coaches sick of talking about data yet? Sometimes we spend so much time working with the numbers that we don't get to the point of a data meeting: creating the plans.

In episode 8, Eight Tips for Digging into Data, I share the most essential ideas for getting the most out of your next data meeting. Facilitate a data dig with your teachers that actually results in improved teaching and learning, and makes a difference to those students who need it most.

Learn how to make plans that reflect the needs of the whole class as well as those of the individual students who need small group instruction. Make your next data review purposeful and impactful!

    7. Planning Collaboratively: Before, During, and After PLC Feb 29, 2020
    Show notes

The first time I tried planning collaboratively with a grade level, I wanted to die. It was so confusing; we were all talking about the same things but we weren't communicating effectively at all, and everyone left without a sense of what to do or why to do it.

Flash forward five years and we'd created a system for planning together! In this episode, I share what to do before, during, and after a collaborative planning PLC to ensure that your teachers are prepared to implement plans that impact teaching and learning in their classrooms.

Get the free download for building content knowledge at the beginning of PLC and start creating a common language with your teachers!

    5. Five Tips for Your Modeling Career Feb 15, 2020
    Show notes

Does modeling in classrooms stress you out? It used to stress me out, big time. It's scary - you don't know the kids, you are walking in to model just one piece of the learning, and the classroom isn't set up to your own teaching style.

We all have horror stories. Listen in to this episode to hear all about the horror that was my first modeling session...and learn from my mistakes!

Modeling can be scary, but it's also is one of the best tools you can have as an instructional coach, especially if you have teachers who learn best by watching (which, let's be honest, is most people - we need to see things in action!). While modeling can be very effective, it has to be done right!

    Here's how.

My top five tips for modeling are the following: establish a plan, exercise chunking, bring your own materials, set behavior expectations, and think-aloud while teaching.

In the episode, I give you a plan for attacking each one of these tips so you can model with confidence (and your cooperating teacher will learn something, too)!

Check out the show notes to get the free modeling checklist and get started on the right foot!
