S9-Ep4: Intentional Leadership in a New Work World Jan 25, 2023

    Guest: Monique Jefferson

Are you a hybrid leader yet?

That’s what today’s work world demands. Most workers prefer work from home. Others prefer to be in the office. Still others like hybrid work: a combination of both. In this episode in our Connex Partners Executive Insights series, we ask -- How do you lead people with such opposing preferences? And how do you accommodate the breadth of diversity in the workforce?

Monique Jefferson says the answer lies in being intentional. The Chief People Officer of NYC’s Community Preservation Corporation successfully guides her leaders into intentionality and inclusivity. Done well, your team will have purpose, passion, and perspective…all of which lead to greater morale and loyalty. She shares her methods with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Monique and Maureen cover:

    • The path to being an intentional leader in today’s hybrid work environment;
    • Why flexibility ranks higher than compensation in importance to today’s workers; and
    • The Three Ps, and their importance to your team…and you .

S7-Ep31: Leading in Emerging Industries Jan 21, 2023

    Guest: James Brenza

By their very nature, emerging industries (such as EVs, private spaceships, and cannabis) present unique leadership challenges – and opportunities – rarely encountered in long-established businesses. In addition to general entrepreneurism, you’re creating something new for the marketplace…and forging the team to shepherd it.

Emerging industries often lend a new twist on old businesses: they allow the opportunity to relook at established practices, sparking innovation in the business sector. James Brenza joins the show to discuss his venture into an emerging industry -- and how that provided him with new challenges as well as the possibilities of new solutions.

Here's what James and Maureen cover:

    • How disruptions in your personal life can spark your drive into new kinds of business;
    • Ways to navigate the uncertainty of cutting-edge industries when legislation isn’t consistent across the country; and
    • Why standards and technology remain vital components in emerging industries.

S7-Ep38: Staying Cool in Challenging Situations (Recognizing & Managing Your Stress Triggers) Jan 20, 2023

    Guest: Janet Fouts

We recognize the many layers of stress we are under day-to-day. Those stresses are very real – and often increase as we move up the leadership ladder. That stress has consequences, both physical and mental. What can we do?

Janet Fouts has distilled some very simple tools that can help us be less reactive and more responsive to what life throws at us. They’re based on her deep dive into mindfulness as she dealt with the extreme stress of working as a full time digital marketer while caring for a dying partner. In the process, she learned that when we are aware of ourselves, we have better opportunities to understand others, making us better leaders, communicators, and partners.

Here's what Janet and Maureen cover:

    • How to recognize, and deal with, the triggers that can set you off;
    • Ways to learn mindfulness in easy microsteps; and
    • Why work meetings cause so much stress (and why Americans do meetings so poorly).

S7-Ep2: The Future Leader - Skills & Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade Jan 19, 2023

    Guest: Jacob Morgan

There has been a lot written about leadership for the present day, but the world is changing quickly. What worked in the past won’t work in the future – so how do we prepare leaders who can successfully navigate and guide us through the next decade and beyond?

What’s required of leaders, even the types of leaders we need, is in flux. So what can a struggling leader do now?

Jacob Morgan wondered, as well, so he interviewed over 140 CEOs, then partnered with LinkedIn to survey almost 14,000 of their members around the globe to see how those CEO insights aligned with employee perspectives. He uncovered some fascinating insights, and shares them in this episode.

Here's what Jacob and Maureen cover:

    • The undeniable reality that pre-pandemic leadership isn’t going to cut it in this post-pandemic decade;
    • Why these changes are happening; and
    • The four mindsets and five behaviors to develop as a leader for tomorrow.

    S9-Ep3: Courageous Followership Jan 18, 2023

Guests: Neil Grunberg & Ira Chaleff

“He who cannot be a good follower, cannot be a good leader.”

Aristotle shared that wisdom over 2,000 years ago, but today we chafe at being labeled a follower. Yet, as Ira Chaleff and Neil Grunberg point out, if no one is following, then no one can be leading, either!

Followership is critical in any organization. Think of followership and leadership as a yin and yang: each of us needs to be good at both of them, and each of us needs to know when to play which role. It all depends on the context. Most critically, be a courageous follower: one with the values and integrity to let your leader know when things are amiss. Enron is a classic warning about what happens when an organization doesn’t have courageous followers!

Here's what Ira, Neil, and Maureen cover:

    • The importance of standing up to and for your leader (even at the same time);
    • How strict hierarchies distort the flow between follower and leader, slowing down the organization; and
    • Why a lack of courageous followership leads to catastrophes at work (such as Enron) and in our personal lives (such as Uvalde and other mass tragedies).

S8-Ep4: Building Communities within Your Business Jan 17, 2023

    Guest: Alice Yoo LeClair

Contrary to old-school management beliefs, having a work-best-friend boosts productivity. Having an entire work community? That boosts a lot of people’s productivity, morale, even longevity with the organization. Best of all, the communities you foster at work don’t need to be work-related to have these effects: gamers, Trekkies, and football fanatics in your workplace all benefit. So how does an HR leader drive community building within their organization? Does remote work make it more difficult? How does it fit with the CHRO’s other responsibilities? And how do you focus on this when managers so often dump their personnel responsibilities on the HR department instead of taking their own leadership reins? Alice Yoo LeClair knows the world of Human Resources well, with experience in organizations of all sizes. With her deep experience and eyes on the future, she shares her wisdom and observations with host Maureen Metcalf.

This is the first of several episodes which view innovative leadership from the perspective of the CHRO and other human resources leaders: the Connex Executive Insights Series.

Here's what Alice and Maureen cover:

    • What a community is, and why having work communities is so important for your team;
    • How workplace communities benefit the broader business; and
    • Why Gallup research shows that having good friends at work substantially boosts productivity.

S3-Ep47: Implicit Bias - What You Don’t See Hurts You! Jan 16, 2023

    Guest: Rebecca Heiss

From our archives, a special show about our hidden biases.

We all have bias. In various forms, it’s built into our brains. But implicit bias creates a disadvantage for leaders and their organizations. Dr. Rebecca Heiss has studied bias extensively, and shares what implicit bias is and how it impacts each of us. As leaders, we need to understand and manage implicit biases because they impact our hiring choices, promotion and succession decisions, company policies – even how closely we pay attention to someone in a presentation. To truly ensure we hire and retain top talent, we need to remove bias from our decision making process as much as possible. During this show, Rebecca shares her research…and what it reveals about the ways we can beat the bias in our business, and our lives.

Here's what Rebecca and Maureen cover:

    • What, exactly, implicit bias is – and how it taints your decision-making without you realizing;
    • How implicit bias goes beyond major strokes like race and religion, such as the seemingly subtle bias of “Blondes have more fun” which has deep effects in the workplace; and
    • The ways bias actually impedes how efficiently (and profitably) your company is achieving its goals.

S8-Ep8: Hiring in the Great Resignation - Developing Your Culture, Communications, & Pipeline in a Crisis Jan 13, 2023

    Guest: Michelle Sanchez-Bickley

Amidst the Great Resignation, exceptional organizations are still retaining their top employees, and recruiting new staff. Renown Health is one of them.

In the second of our Connex Executive Insights series, Michelle Sanchez-Bickley of Renown Health joins Maureen Metcalf to discuss the challenges of the Great Resignation for HR departments. It’s particularly challenging in the health care sector; the strains of COVID on our medical system put particular pressure on doctors, nurses, and hospital support staff. That’s led to 30% or more turnover.

Using a combination of developing internal culture, open communications, hybrid and remote working, and a modern innovation on apprenticeship, Renown Health is a bright spot emerging above the crisis.

    • Why taking a hard look at your company culture is key to losing staff;
    • How Michelle maintained a hiring pipeline even though COVID hit the healthcare industry so hard; and
    • Why you lose good employees when they don’t see a path for growth, development, or simply learning.

    S8-Ep10: ShEquity - A Refugee’s Path to Empowering Women & Their Businesses Jan 12, 2023

    Guest: Pauline Koelbl

Surviving life as a refugee is one thing. To turn that life into a mission to empower other women is quite another.

That’s exactly what Pauline Koelbl did. Escaping the war in Rwanda, she found herself a homeless refugee. Eventually, Pauline found a home in Tucson, Arizona. More importantly, she found mentoring and support there – and now “pays it forward” as the founder and managing director of ShEquity, and investment firm providing capital and other resources to women-led and -owned businesses in Africa. Women are the key to unlocking economic success on the continent; they operate over 40% of small and medium sized enterprises. What’s more, they reinvest about 90% of their revenue in sectors and activities that benefit their families and communities – men only reinvest 40%. That’s one of many reasons the McKinsey Global Institute estimates the global GDP would increase by $28 trillion if we simply closed the business gender gap!

Pauline shares her compelling story of refugee-turned-entrepreneur focused on female empowerment with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Pauline and Maureen cover:

    • How closing the gender gap in the workforce potentially adds $28 trillion to the global GDP;
    • Why, despite the stereotypes, refugees bring with them vast amounts of intellectual capital host countries tend to waste; and
    • Why women are the key to African (and other) nations fully realizing their economic potential.

S8-Ep11: Workforce Demographics & an Inclusive Culture Jan 09, 2023

Guests: Nadia Younes, Gamiel Yafai, & Louise Carvalho

Slow as molasses. That’s one way to describe how leaders have responded to the rapidly changing workplace. The work environment was already changing before the COVID pandemic; now, there’s no going back to the old “industrial” model. It doesn’t meet rapidly evolving employee expectations nor the major shifts in workforce demographics. That, in turn, means the Great Resignation should have come as no surprise at all!

The new, effective workplace models all embrace DEI: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Inclusive business cultures hold many advantages for staff, leaders, and profitability. From morale to a broader pool of leaders, the benefits are impactful.

How does it work? Nadia Younes, Louise Carvalho, and Gamiel Yafai use CERN, Europe’s particle physics research center, as a launching point to explore inclusiveness with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Nadia, Gamiel, & Louise cover:

    • While Gen Z gets all the press, leaders must learn how to juggle the wants and needs of five different generations overlapping in the same workplace;
    • Why – despite the old-school wishes of CEOs like Tim Cook, Bob Iger, and Elon Musk – workers and the workplace have changed forever; and
    • With the decline in church attendance and other traditional social arenas, how the workplace has become most people’s place of “community.”

S8-Ep12: Power, Charisma, Hormones: Science Studies Leadership Jan 08, 2023

    Guest: John Antonakis

Power does tend to corrupt. Especially the more testosterone is added to the mix.

That’s just one finding that the scientific study of leadership has revealed. Yet, despite the legions of leadership consultants plying their theories, very little research in the field has been conducted with scientific rigor. Even science basics, such as control groups and identifying variables, are missing. That punches big holes in many leading leadership philosophies and best-selling books; they look at what top-performing companies have in common…but don’t check to see if the worst performing companies have those same things in common, too!

Enter John Antonakis. A professor of organizational behavior, and the editor-in-chief of The Leadership Quarterly, John applies the scientific model to studies of leadership qualities, with a particular interest in charisma. He’ll talk about power, hormones, and his AI charismometer in this episode.

Here's what John and Maureen cover:

    • Why the lack of truly scientific studies of leadership makes it difficult to tease out what really forges a good (even great) leader;
    • How testosterone in a leader increases their likelihood of corruption; and
    • That most traits of truly great leaders can be learned – you don’t have to be born with them!

S8-Ep13: How HR Drives New Beginnings Jan 07, 2023

    Guest: Fara Palumbo

Change is probably the biggest single consequence of the pandemic on organizations in every sector and of every size. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina not only weathered that change, but thrived – even winning awards. They discuss change, transformation, and how HR acts as the primary driver for those shifts.

Here's what Fara and Maureen reveal:

    1. How remote work has so many advantages for both the worker and the organization;
    2. Why it can be outright foolish to return to the inefficiencies of full on-site work; and

S8-Ep14: Getting Lost in the Language of Leadership Jan 07, 2023

    Guest: Jonathan Reams

Leadership is nothing without thought -- and research shows we (literally!) think with our hearts as well as our minds. Neurocardiology is just one way we're learning about how a good leader thinks. The development of more robust thinking skills is vital in growing as a leader. Jonathan Reams, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, discusses the mindsets required for leaders to be effective.

Here's what Jonathan and Maureen cover:

    1. What the science of neurocardiology shows about how a leaders’ emotions physically affect their teams;
    2. How the fall of Superman and rise of The Avengers in popular culture reflects the change in leadership the real world needs; and
    3. The thinking tools we need in a knowledge economy.

S8-Ep17: Cultivating Empathy through Authenticity Jan 06, 2023

    Guest: Jason Lioy

Authenticity boils down to one key concept: be yourself. That concept is critical at Dawn Foods; their passion is their people, and their goal is to create a psychologically safe environment for people to bring their whole selves to work. In short, every Dawn employee can truly “be yourself.”

Making the workplace a safe space took a lot of effort, but Dawn succeeded. The Great Resignation barely touched the company; taking DEI, empathy, and authenticity to a whole new level has driven both retention and core business strategy. Their I Am staff campaign and Women in Leadership program are just two successful facets of Dawn’s belief in people. Dawn’s Chief People Officer – Jason Lioy – joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss the motivation and implementation of this unique and inspiring drive to help each person achieve their potential.

Here's what you’ll learn from Jason & Maureen:

    • Pre-pandemic, companies viewed their staff as resources or assets (things), but successful companies today view them as people first;
    • Why people respond better to (and are more productive with) authentic leaders; and
    • How respect for diversity boosts the bottom line.

    S8-Ep24: Achieving Employee-Centric Leadership - A Leader’s Food for Thought Jan 05, 2023

    Guest: Heather Krentler

Employees want to be heard. They want to know their employer wants the best for them. Continental Services heard – and worked hard to innovate their company culture to fully focus on the employee journey. Heather Krentler, Continental’s chief administrative officer, joins host Maureen Metcalf to explore Continental’s employee-led culture and how it came to be; the changes made not just to engagement, but sourcing the best talent in the first place; and how leaders embraced the new employee-centric culture. The results have been remarkable: a happy staff really does lead to a pleasant bottom line!

Here's what Heather and Maureen cover:

    • How part of the Great Resignation and Quiet Quitting stem from people – your staff – asserting more control over their lives;
    • Why compensation doesn’t cut it as the only benefit to retain a valuable employee; and
    • Why the best ideas tend to come from the front line, not the back office.

S8-Ep23: How to Harness Honesty Jan 03, 2023

Peter Kozodoy was peeved at the number of lying, dishonest managers, CEOs, and other leaders he had to contend with. So he analyzed honesty…and found that honest leaders not only do better, but their teams function better, too. Peter discusses:

    • How to use strategic brutal honesty to improve far more than morale: it improves sales, marketing, recruiting, and so much more;
    • The simple 2-question technique that teaches us how to shake off self-limiting talk that prevents us from success; and
    • How to use honesty like a Jedi mind-trick to spark creativity, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and become a more effective and empowered leader.

Peter’s book is Honest to Greatness.

    S8-Ep33: Growing a Powerhouse City - Leading Together Jan 02, 2023

    Guest: Kenny McDonald

It takes a village to raise a city. That twists traditional wisdom, but it’s true: no one leader can improve an urban landscape alone. It takes a group of leaders in public and private partnership. When they’re united by one vision, their city can grow into a powerhouse. Kenny McDonald oversees that for Columbus, Ohio – a city that’s launched into a bold future…most recently, as the site for Intel’s newest, largest chip plant. As president of the Columbus Partnership, McDonald upholds and advances the shared vision of the city’s CEOs. In this episode, he shares how that works so effectively – and what other urban leaders can learn from the Partnership’s example.

S8-Ep38: The Power of Passion & Perseverance - Four Levels of Grit Dec 31, 2022

    Guest: Jim Ritchie-Dunham

There’s more to grit than determination – a whole lot more. Knowing that can help you harness this incredible power of passion and perseverance.

Building on the work of Angela Duckworth and her seminal book, guest Jim Ritchie-Dunham shows how there are four levels of grit in an organization...an insight which dovetails neatly with his own work in ecosynomics. Leaders often unknowingly determine how it cascades through various parts of their business – but because they’re not aware of it, they may be reinforcing the wrong kind for a particular department, team, or employee. That results in inefficiencies, lower staff engagement, and the loss of talent. But all of that can be boosted when grit is recognized and deftly applied. Dig in to a deeper understanding of grit with Jim Ritchie-Dunham and host Maureen Metcalf!

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    1. The four lenses for viewing and identifying the grit in your team, and throughout your organization
    2. The unstated social agreements you have with every single person you work with, and
    3. How the best leaders see grit in their teams.

S8-Ep41: What Your Team REALLY Thinks...in Real Time! Dec 30, 2022

    Guest: Greg Moran

    "Good afternoon, staff. I'm listening."

If only your boss truly listened, like Frasier Crane! The reality is most folks high up the chain have little clue about what the front line -- and the customers the front line interacts with -- are thinking. As the staff at one major company said, "They're not even listening to us."

The solution is easy. Slack, Teams, and other chat channels have replaced the watercooler as your company's own internal social media. Listening to those conversations reveals a wealth of information...and solutions to boost your team's and customers' experiences. As an example, guest Greg Moran discusses the basics of how Aware's AI system finds trending topics without intruding on privacy.

In this episode, you’ll learn: 1. There's a big difference between monitoring employees and listening to them

    2. How listening -- directly and via AI -- gives people a voice in the head office; a voice not filtered by management, and 3. How to maintain individuals' privacy while keeping a finger on the pulse of your team.

S8-Ep52: Do No Harm: Ethics for Leader Dec 20, 2022

    Guest: Terri O'Fallon

Few leaders set out to harm others – but it can happen despite our best intentions. The key is to look outward from our decisions to all the ripple effects they generate.

And the best way to look outward is to look inward!

It’s hardly a secret that our emotions affect our cognition. Our guest, Terri O’Fallon, founder of Stages International, reveals in this episode that identifying and naming our emotions helps us become better leaders, and increases our sense of well-being. With host Maureen Metcalf, Terri delves into the concept of 'developmental ethics' to challenge leaders to embrace their emotions, actively seek out potential harm, and practice adaptability for the greater good with generous spirit.

Here's what Terri and Maureen cover:

    1. How do emotions influence leadership and how can leaders ensure they are doing no harm?
    2. What are the benefits of recognizing and labeling emotions, both positive and negative?
    3. How can leaders cultivate generosity of heart when faced with competitive situations?

    S8-Ep50: Encore Facing Uncertainty: It’s VUCA Dec 20, 2022

    Featured Guest: Chris Nolan

One look at the headlines on any given day makes it clear: the world is UNclear. How can an organization navigate through the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity to survive – much less succeed? By understanding VUCA, a concept developed by the Pentagon in 1987 to give our military an edge in chaos. Filmmaker Chris Nolan joins Maureen Metcalf to share how this military technique directly applies to businesses and non-profits – information drawn from his new documentary and book:It’s VUCA!.

As a political scientist, Matt studies democracy – its evolution, and particularly how democracies decline. He shares his perspective on the rise of populism across the world, how that leads to un-democratic leaders, then answers the question, “Is American democracy a brittle twig or a supple bamboo?” He offers solutions, too; every strong democracy in history thrived on disparate points of view – and leaders who welcomed diverse opinions.

Evan Sohn, the CEO of Recruiter.com, is in a unique position to see beyond the simplistic explanations of TV pundits. He joins host Maureen Metcalf to share his big-picture view of the state of hiring today…and where it will be tomorrow. Lesson 1: “Money solves all problems” is a pre-pandemic thought that no longer applies. Employees are looking further; in addition to equitable pay, they’re looking for meaningful benefits and companies with conscience. They want their hard work to contribute to more than this quarter’s P&L statement. And they’re willing to hop to the jobs that provide it. Or they job hop to maintain personal freedom and engagement. Whatever the reasons, the talent pool is changing – and your hiring and work culture need to change with it. Evan explains how, as he provides the history of Recruiter.com .

    S8-Ep28: Leading with Character: A Real-Life Red Roof Report Dec 19, 2022

    Featured Guest: George Limbert

    “Character is what you do.”

That’s a fundamental leadership principle for George Limbert, president of Red Roof. This is our second visit with George since he began his leadership journey as a first-time corporate president last summer. Red Roof has prospered under his guidance, proving the value of his philosophies. Character sits at their core.

A focus on character led to many innovations at Red Roof, including their Women’s Center for Excellence and Women in Leadership programs to help level the gender playing field, particularly in the lodging industry.

To keep character objectively defined, and his actions with character exemplary for his team, George looks at himself and his team through the lens of judicial temperament. It’s a non-biased way of looking at a situation from all sides to determine its core truth; it comes naturally to George, whose legal background goes beyond law school with deep roots in family: his father is a judge, and a brother and sister are also attorneys.

George shares the many ways any good leader can display character, calmly analyze corporate storms, and deal with other real life ups and downs of leadership with host Maureen Metcalf. Join us for this episode filled with practical examples from Red Roof.

S8-Ep20: Bringing Clarity to Confusion Dec 19, 2022

Featured Guest: Terri O'Fallon, Ph.D. & Kim Barta MA

Although our bodies stop growing, our minds continue to develop throughout adulthood. But seeing the world differently can be confusing as your old brain emerges into the new. That confusion can be doubly difficult for leaders navigating their own growth (or Vertical Development) with that of their teams. At each successive level, leaders expand their capacity – yet face new shadows: areas of confusion and challenge. By understanding those areas, you will be able to identify and move through them more quickly, bringing light and opportunity where shadows once fell. Terri O’Fallon and Kim Barta of STAGES International join Maureen to discuss different areas of confusion and, more importantly, how to recognize and overcome them…and continue growing in the process.

S8-Ep29: Informed Leadership: The Power of Trauma Dec 19, 2022

    Featured Guest: Rachael Kelly

Every business has its ups and downs. But when trauma hits, the worst thing to do is ignore it. The best: tend to your people! Rachael Kelly watched the effects of COVID quarantine rapidly cascade through the restaurant industry…including at her organization: Smokey Bones. As a restaurant chain, the quarantine hit Smokey Bones hard -- and almost instantly. That, in turn, created serious issues for servers and other restaurant staff. Rachael joins host Maureen Metcalf to reveal how they dealt with the cascading trauma…and, more importantly, how they turned it into an opportunity to improve their team environment and emerge even stronger. In fact, Smokey Bones holds multi-year certifications as a Great Place to Work.

    Featured Guest: Raj Subrameyer

Raj Subrameyer knows about toxic leadership first-hand: HE was a toxic leader. Fortunately, Raj learned before it was too late that the toxins affect the leaders just as much as their teams. Anxiety, depression, anger, sleeplessness, illness...they all mount up. In this episode, Raj talks about his former leadership style, and his subsequent journey to a better work life. In the process, he reveals lessons on personal branding. It's not unrelated -- the more comfortable you are with yourself, the more comfortable your team becomes in working with you.

S8-Ep24:The Secret Code to Uncommon Leadership - with Ruchira Chaudhary Dec 19, 2022

    Featured Guest: Ruchira Chaudhary

Something was wrong with the company.

Working for a large corporation in Singapore, Ruchira Chaudhary realized there were too many issues blocking a thriving work environment…and it all stemmed from poor leadership. Now an international executive coach and author of Coaching: The Secret Code to Uncommon Leadership, Ruchira joins us to reveal how coaching is more than a nice skill for leaders – it’s the secret sauce of truly extraordinary leadership.

Coaching is more important today than ever before: our turbulent times require leaders that empower, elevate and enable. They must build trust, resilience, and admit mistakes. And they must recognize that each team member requires different coaching: understanding this could actually help close the workplace gap between men and women, for example. Ruchira points out that coaching is no longer a "nice to have'' aspect of leadership - it is absolutely essential, and you simply cannot be a good leader without being a good coach!

Strategic foresight is the established and proven process of looking at future probabilities, yet many business and NPO leaders either don’t know about it, or don’t understand it. It’s used by Fortune 200 companies, the U.S. military, the World Bank, and others. As futurist Rebecca Ryan explains to host Maureen Metcalf, strategic foresight helps those organizations decrease risk and maximize opportunity. That, in turn, provides them with a competitive advantage. So much so that Disney requires learning it before candidates can enter the C-Suite. Listen to this episode – and get a glimpse of your future!

    S8-Ep36: Facing Uncertainty: It’s VUCA Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Chris Nolan

One look at the headlines on any given day makes it clear: the world is UNclear. How can an organization navigate through the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity to survive – much less succeed? By understanding VUCA, a concept developed by the Pentagon in 1987 to give our military an edge in chaos. Filmmaker Chris Nolan joins Maureen Metcalf to share how this military technique directly applies to businesses and non-profits – information drawn from his new documentary and book: It’s VUCA!. S8-Ep42: Curing Corporate Short-Termism - with Gregory Milano Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Gregory Milano

A leader’s lust for short-term profit often means pulling tomorrow’s results into today’s reports. Those intentions may be well-meaning, intending to please shareholders and the board. But they can result in bankrupting the future. After all, if you’re crediting next quarter’s returns into this quarter, how will you make next quarter look as appealing? It’s unsustainable.

In his new book, Curing Corporate Short-Termism, Gregory Milano guides senior managers who want to encourage more investment in the future of their companies. Many corporate practices are counterproductive, creating stiff headwinds for managers trying to grow their business. The solution: a culture of ownership. When you see yourself as the owner of the company, your decisions change; the long-term becomes more important.

Gregory discusses the dangers of short-termism and the tools to overcome it with host Maureen Metcalf – and how these principles produce long-term value that benefits not just the organization's shareholders, but all of its many stakeholders…including society at large.

S8-Ep40: The Power of Praise: Making People’s Performance Positive Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Ben Marcovitz

Most often, when employees are labeled as underperforming, leaders write them off. When such an employee inevitably leaves (or is forced out), you’re potentially giving your competition top talent…because with the right approach, those employees can become motivated high-performers. Ben Marcovitz, CEO of the Rise Institute, believes expecting radical growth from struggling staff should be the norm. It’s far less costly than staff churn and training, and can reveal untapped potential. From the classroom to the corporation, Ben has seen this work consistently in practice. He shares the details with host Maureen Metcalf. Join us, and radically grow your in-house pool of talent!

S8-Ep25: 4 Communication Skills Every Leader Needs Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jon Reitz

Communication is key to effective leadership. You may have the best vision in the history of humankind – but if you can’t communicate it to others, you’ll never come close to achieving your goals.

Good leaders know this; that’s why Googling leadership communication skills results in literally billions of results! Sorting through those hits could take a lifetime. Fortunately, Jonathan Reitz has spent his life in professional communications, and he’s distilled it down to the four most essential communication skills every good leader needs. They’re not what you’d expect.

Jonathan joins host Maureen Metcalf in this episode to share those four skills. He’s ready to communicate them to you now!

    S8-Ep35: Employees: Empowered! Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Rod Lacey

simPRO’s approach to the Great Resignation is simple: empower employees. And learning how to direct that empowerment is simple, too: listen to staff. Employees will tell you what they need, and want! This employee empowerment prepares simPRo for the future of work. In this episode, simPRO’s Chief People Operations Officer, Rod Lacey, shares insights into how the employer/employee relationship has evolved; what that means for company culture and leadership strategy; how decisions are shaped by employee listening strategies; and how this all manifests as in the employee value proposition. You’ll learn that, for simPRO, simple solutions mean success!

S8-Ep39: Integrating Integrative Medicine in Leadership Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. Maryanna Klatt

It’s no secret that the well-being of your workforce directly affects the well-being of your entire organization. Prior to the pandemic, most corporate wellness programs focused on physical fitness. The stresses of COVID quarantining, though, showed that mental health is every bit as important.

Integrative medicine ties both physical and mental health together, revealing many ways in which they influence each other. In this episode, Dr. Maryanna Klatt discusses the role of integrative medicine, how it affects our well-being, and why this is so important for leaders. Her own research focuses on mindfulness, but the Center works with and researches acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, massage, and more.

There’s a clear ROI for leaders: reducing stress and burnout is a mighty tool in keeping the Great Resignation away!

S8-Ep22: The Next Rules of Work Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Gary Bolles

Work isn’t what it used to be.

Even before COVID and the Great Resignation, a seismic shift began shaking in the workplace: not just how we work, but why we work. Prior generations worked mainly for money; today’s younger generations work mainly for mission (and hope the pay will follow).

How can a leader lead a workforce that’s so varied in why, where, and how they work? First, understand – and help forge – the new rules of work. Second, adapt your “sets”: mindset, skillset, and toolset.

That’s simply stated, but not always easy to do. Gary Bolles, author of the new book, The Next Rules of Work, joins host Maureen Metcalf to uncover the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the workplaces succeeding in this new world…and the mindset that will help you embrace them for your own team.

Many people fear the Artificial Intelligence revolution that’s underway. But like every other major societal revolution in human history, you can play it to your favor. The key? Innovative thinking. In reality, these upheavals create newer, better jobs for people – though, from the sabot to the Luddite, people who don’t think differently, innovatively, even disruptively miss the opportunities these advancements create. S8-Ep1: Do It on Purpose Dec 18, 2022

    Featured Guest: Nell Derick Debevoise

If you don’t know your own purpose, can you really get behind your organization’s purpose?

Nell Derick Debevoise found that a critical component of success is knowing how your personal purpose intersects with your organization’s purpose. That holds true for the individual members of your team, too: if you understand what their personal or professional purpose has in common with the company’s purpose, you’ll foster a happier and more productive team.

With purpose in mind, you can then look at decisions through the Me/We/World dimensions: how does this affect me and the individual members of my team; how does this affect my organization; and how will it affect the world?

Nell draws from her years of experience in both the non-profit and private sectors to reveal the commonalities of good, purpose-driven leadership in both, highlighting the techniques within her new book, Going First: Find the Courage to Lead Purposefully and Inspire Action.

    S7-Ep44: Reimagining American Identity Dec 16, 2022

Featured Guests: Amiel Handelsman and Jewel Kinch-Thomas

America’s racial reckoning is underway, yet continues to be hotly debated. One novel approach comes from leadership consultants Amiel Handelsman and Jewel Kinch-Thomas: frame it as a hero’s or heroine’s journey. The answer is surprising, simple – and makes a great deal of sense in fostering reckoning…then reconciliation.

The same core principles also apply to leadership, particularly when combined to the fundamental leadership style required by musicians when performing jazz: the music simply couldn't be performed without a leader who knows how to forge a team, yet preserve the unique perspectives and talents of each member of the team.

S7-Ep50: Looking at Labor Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: the International Labor Organization Dec 16, 2022

Featured Guests: Kevin Cassidy & Christopher Washington

Formed in the aftermath of World War I, the International Labour Organization has evolved along with the workforce as part of the League of Nations and the United Nations. The ILO studies the environment for workers from a tripartite perspective: from labor itself, from business, and from government. All three are necessary to create optimal conditions for workers – but for women, minorities, and citizens of developing nations, conditions are far from optimal.

Kevin Cassidy – Director for the ILO Office for the United States and Canada – has a uniquely comprehensive view on both the issues and solutions for labor today…as well as glimpses of how artificial intelligence and new tech will affect labor tomorrow. It’s not what you think; CEOs and CFOs, for example, are in the group most easily replaced by AI. Franklin University Provost Christopher Washington joins host Maureen Metcalf in this wide-ranging discussion of labor’s past, present, and future.

S7-Ep51: Red Roof: Revisioning the Future Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: George Limbert

Helping nurses and doctors during the pandemic. Assisting first responders as towns recover from natural disasters. Joining the fight against human trafficking.

Red Roof’s evolution as a corporation is more than just another branding story. New president George Limbert firmly believes leaders must guide their organizations into always doing what is right: for customers, of course, but also for employees…and communities. As a new president, we plan on following George quarterly to better learn his vision, observe his evolution and growth as a leader, and study how he incorporates his principles into day-to-day operations. Join us for this first introductory episode as George discusses his history, and the steps he’s already taken in the midst of 2021’s radical viral, social, and economic changes.

S7-Ep49: The Circular Economy: Better for Earth, Better for Business Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: John Kilpatrick

Traditional organizations follow a linear economy: everything flows one-way, from resource to product to consumer to trash. It’s often summarized by the mantra “take, make, waste.” That certainly doesn’t mitigate climate change, pollution, and other threats to humanity. Is there a better path that won’t disrupt our consumer-driven culture?

John Kilpatrick heartily believes so. Just circle back to the economy of our great-great grandparents: the circular economy. It’s the old “reduce, reuse, recycle” mantra, with a heavy emphasis on the “reuse.” It was the common sense way of life for most Americans for much of our history. John goes into the details - and reveals the clear benefits to both business and consumers - as he joins host Maureen Metcalf in this episode.

S7-Ep52: Normal Is Gone: Leadership Trends for 2022 Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Christopher Washington

The pandemic didn’t destroy the old “normal.” COVID simply accelerated trends that were already underway. The best leaders see that, and are forging new paths to success for their organizations and their people.

The tables turn in this episode, as regular host Maureen Metcalf becomes the guest, interviewed by ILI Fellow and Franklin University provost Christopher Washington. Drawing on her own extensive experience as well as the collective knowledge of the leaders she interviewed throughout 2021, Maureen reveals the six major trends for leaders in 2022: from a reduced emphasis on results in favor of growing capacity, to the continuing labor shortage (and the need to retain your current employees by truly valuing them). Whether you’re in a government, non-profit, or business sector, this is a must-listen for leaders worldwide looking for success in the new year.

S6-Ep45: The Blindspots Between Us: How to Overcome Unconscious Cognitive Bias Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. Gleb Tsipursk

We all want positive, productive, and genuine relationships—whether it’s with our family, friends, peers, coworkers, or romantic partners. And yet, time and time again, we all seem to make the same thinking errors that threaten or sabotage these relationships. These errors are called cognitive bias, and they happen when our brain attempts to simplify information by making assumptions. Today, Gleb joins Maureen to discuss his book "The Blindspots Between Us: How to Overcome Unconscious Cognitive Bias and Build Better Relationships" and the skills to help you debias—to stop, pause, and objectively observe situations before jumping to conclusions about others’ motives.

S7-Ep45: To Be Honest: Lead with the Power of Truth, Justice, & Purpose Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Ron Carucci

Honesty is more than a character trait: it’s a muscle that has to be built to stay strong; honesty can be learned. Truth, justice, and purpose are “three sides of the same coin." Together, they mean honesty - to have honesty, you need all three; honesty means you have to say the right thing, do the right thing, and say and do them for the right reason...even when it’s hard. Based on a 15-year longitudinal study of more than 3,200 leaders, we can now prove under what conditions people will tell the truth, behave fairly, and serve a greater good...and under what conditions they will lie, cheat, and serve their own interests. Ron Carrucci joins the show to discuss his book, To Be Honest. It is a book about heroes – the honest leaders and thinkers we should all want to emulate. Honest organizations out-perform, out-compete, and out-attract top talent by substantial multipliers.

S7-Ep46: One Big Idea: Helping Leaders Focus & Grow Their Organization Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Pete Martin

If you're a leader of a business or non-profit, how you spend your time has a direct impact on the success of your organization. Focusing on just one big idea instead of scattershotting your attention keeps that impact positive.

What you as a leader work on minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day matters -- and either moves the needle and propels growth, or constricts it. For instance, consistently and strategically choosing one “big idea” per month will move a business forward faster than any one particular tactic. Working on one big idea across each pillar of your business - team, customers, capital and strategic execution (and personal mindset) - will lead to exponential growth over time. Pete Martin joins Maureen to share reasons why companies get stuck and stop growing, and what leaders can do to change that.

    S8-Ep5: Hot Topics: A Prime Minister’s Perspective Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Kim Campbell

"The future will spit on our graves." Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell doesn't mince words when she muses on the big issues facing the world today...and, particularly, what happens if we don't work to fix them now. From climate change to sexual harassment, host Maureen Metcalf draws remarkably candid perspectives from the only female to have served in Canada's top spot.

S7-Ep47: Meetings Stink: How to Make Meetings Matter (and Collaboration, Too) Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Darren Chait

There's one simple truth most working adults realize in their first job: meetings stink. Darren Chait is no exception. While he was an attorney, he recoiled at how inefficient and archaic lawyers' meetings are...then he had sticker shock when he saw the invoices and realized clients pay for that slow-paced inefficiency! That put him on the path to finding a better way for meeting. The result: Hugo, an online app that changes the way we think about meetings.

On the way, Darren learned that leadership in a fast-growth startup is very different than what the textbooks say. He joins Maureen to share what he's learned on the journey about leadership, how collaboration is changing, modern team dynamics, shared consciousness, direction versus support, and when to make leader problems team problems.

    S7-Ep48: The Power & Promise of Gen Z, Part 2 Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: AnneMarie Hayek

Older generations view Gen Z as having their eyes glued to their smartphones. While those phones are a window on the world no other generation has encountered, it means they’re more likely to see the world for what it is, warts and all. And that exposure to the world and its diverse cultures makes Gen Z more ardent in resolving life-threatening issues like climate change and racism…driving them to make real life better.

AnneMarie Hayek is returning to the show to continue our conversation about her research of GenZ. In her book, Generation We, she joins forces with thousands of Zs to tell their powerful story—a story that impacts all generations. In her return visit, we discuss how leaders we can attract and lead Gen Z, how Gen Z’s unparalleled exposure to diversity shapes their priorities, and how this generation will impact the arc of humanity for generations to come.

S7-Ep27: Mental Toughness: How to Embrace Stress for Greater Success Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Colonel Deb Lewis

Women (and men) face unhealthy stress and anxiety on a daily basis - it’s a wonder we’re still standing. Too few of us have stress tools powerful enough to put stress to work for us so we can enjoy the journey. Once you’ve learned how to be mentally tough, you will use stress to your advantage. It becomes your superpower!

Colonel Deb Lewis learned the importance of mental toughness as part of the very first class of women to graduate from West Point. The lessons learned there, and in her subsequent Army career, inspired her to develop her unique Mentally Tough Women program to teach people how to handle stress, not simply de-stress. She joins the show to share her experiences, and how you can learn to effectively use stress to your advantage, too.

    S7-Ep28: Workforce Education: A New Roadmap Dec 16, 2022

Featured Guests: William Bonvillian & Sanjay Sarma

Technological advances are putting quality jobs out of reach for workers who lack the proper skills and training. From pre-K through college and on-the-job ""professional development,"" the United States' old-school education system simply isn't up to the task. Universities, for example, can no longer be havens of academic theory and football; enrollment will begin to trickle over the next decade as college grads become too unprepared for the modern workplace.

We need a roadmap for a new workforce education system to rebuild America's working class, tackling inequality by equipping our workers for twenty-first-century jobs. The post-pandemic workplace requires us to train more workers more quickly, using innovative methods. William Bonvillian and Sanjay Sarma -- both of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - join host Maureen Metcalf to share various ideas on the new roles community colleges, employers, governments, and universities need in workforce education, as well as new education technologies that may be adopted to deliver such training.

S7-Ep42: The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success No One Taught You Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Mark Herschberg

Networking, negotiating, communicating, leading, career planning—all skills critical to your career success. But did anyone ever teach you these skills? Mark Herschberg is on the show to discuss his book The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You. He shares practical ideas from his book and his thoughts on leadership that will help you master these vital skills.

S7-Ep41: Winning Digital Customers: The Antidote to Irrelevance Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Howard Tiersky

Digital is at the center of most adults' lifestyles worldwide -- and it's here to stay. (In fact, roughly 1/3 of people surveyed said they'd give up sex instead of their smartphone!) That has disrupted and changed the customer relationship. Customers today expect the brands they deal with to deliver outstanding and seamless digital experiences. If your brand is failing to thrive, odds are you're ignoring the marketplace changes digital has wrought. You must take what is core to your value proposition and adapt it, perhaps significantly, for a world filled with digital customers. That will require flexible and innovative leaders whose companies can turn on a dime. Howard Tiersky joins Maureen to discuss the methods for accomplishing this outlined in his new book, Winning Digital Customers: The Antidote to Irrelevance, as well as his experiences assisting large organizations grow from their analog past.

    S7-Ep40: The Power & Promise of Generation Z - Part 1 Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: AnneMarie Hayek

AnneMarie Hayek joins the show to share insights from her new book, Generation We. In this book, she joins forces with thousands of Generation Zs to tell their powerful story—one that impacts all of us. From new ideas on capitalism, politics, and climate change to education, gender, race, and work, AnneMarie explains how Gen Z thinks, what they envision, and why we should be hopeful. Zs are not naïve idealists. They’re hardened realists with a bold vision for how we can transition, re-create, and progress. Generation We is your invitation to see the future they will create as it’s unfolding.

S7-Ep39: The Science Behind Our Yes! Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. Jim Ritchie-Dunham

We all have agreements. Some are overt, such as agreeing to make monthly payments when you get a mortgage to buy a house. And some are unconscious, like the agreement in sports that everyone on your team will work toward winning against the other team.

We all have two ways of responding to those agreements. You have a Yes! response that aligns your purpose and unique contributions with the impact you can generate and the experience you can have. It's yours to choose. Your Yes! always generates net-positive value and your No! always generates net-negative value—your choice. Jim Ritchie-Dunham joins Maureen to explain the science behind our Yes!

S3-Ep38: Flex: The Art & Science of Leadership in a Changing World Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. Jeff Hull

In the past, to move up the corporate ladder and succeed at the top, you simply had to set goals, motivate the troops, delegate to underlings, and groom a successor. Now, if you are leading a team you must manage a kaleidoscope of people from a variety of cultures, across a range of ages, all of whom are wired together 24/7. These changing demographics and structures have led to a seismic shift in terms of the tools needed to successfully manage and grow within a company: charisma and strategic thinking abilities now matter less than qualities such as vulnerability and relatability. Jeff Hull joins Maureen to discuss the research he has done on the art and science of leadership in a changing world that is featured in his book, Flex.

S7-Ep37: The Science of Dream Teams Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Mike Zani

Moneyball was just the tip of the iceberg. In that movie, a baseball team relies on performance data instead of scouts' intuition to build a winning club. The very same concept can forge a dream team in your own NPO or business.

Sophisticated assessments, data, and software give CEOs and managers in any industry detailed insights into human behavior -- and, more critically, their team members' behavior. As CEO of The Predictive Index, Mike Zani has witnessed firsthand how the application of data and science can impact, and completely change, the way we function in our professional lives. In his new book, THE SCIENCE OF DREAM TEAMS: How Talent Optimization Can Drive Engagement, Productivity, and Happiness, Zani details a data-driven approach to talent strategy that makes hiring, motivating, and managing people more efficient and effective than ever. From coaching a U.S. Olympic team to founding an investment firm, he knows first hand how assessments can build a dream team.

S7-Ep36: Finding Meaning, Joy, & Purpose in What You Do Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Paul Gibbons

Conversations about meaning and purpose at work are very old and very new. Spirituality provides a lens for those discussions -- a lens that is effective regardless of your team's religious preferences. From evangelical to atheist, a sense of mission and meaning are critical to well-being. Workplace spirituality helps us understand the issues underlying personal meaning in the workplace: fulfillment, engagement, purpose, leadership and more. However, it also increases worries about values conflicts and how well organizations handle that. There are many ways to help the process go smoothly. 40-year career veteran Paul Gibbons joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss the spirituality of work and leadership for leaders and organizations.

S7-Ep35: Building a Culture of Brain Health, Growth, & Effectiveness Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. JJ Walcutt

The power of mind over body goes back at least 2,000 years with the Stoics -- but what about the power of the brain over both mind and body?

To be competitive over the next decade, all organizations -- non-profits, businesses, and especially the military -- must not only help staff optimize their bodies for physical and mental health purposes; they also need to ensure that cognitive optimization is a major focus of staff development. Despite our hubris, the human brain is not equipped to handle the deluge of data that is coming, much less the constant upskilling requirements that are emerging already. Dr. JJ Walcutt joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss Accelerate, a program that helps organizations get on the right track toward building a culture of brain health, growth, and effectiveness. The military is paying attention; should your organization, too?

S7-Ep34: Leverage Change: Achieve Faster, Easier, Better Results Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jake Jacobs

Change is now a constant in all organizations. Is there a way to make it easier? Jake Jacobs joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss his new book Leverage Change, and how leaders can use the concept of leverage to achieve faster, easier, better results related to all change work they are doing in their organizations -- at the individual, team or organizational levels. He shares practical actions leaders can take to achieve the much sought-after, but seldom accomplished, goals of successful change management.

S7-Ep33: Career Sponsorship -- and Being Sponsor Ready Dec 16, 2022

Featured Guests: Ricky Robinson & Keith Powell

Rising up the corporate ladder is fraught with challenges. Those challenges -- both visible and invisible -- multiply for people of color, women, and others underrepresented in the executive suite. Mentors are fine, but an in-house sponsor can truly make the path smoother. Ricky Robinson and Keith Powell share why...not with theory, but hard-won practical advice from their own 20+ year journeys to C-suite success in some of the world's largest companies.

S7-Ep32: Practical Ways to Never Stop Growing Dec 16, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jared Graybeal

In The Self Help Book: 6 Practical Ways to Never Stop Growing, author and coach Jared Graybeal outlines six practical ways to live a life of constant growth while avoiding stagnation or burnout:

Confidence Competence Clarity Character Connections and Commitment.

That’s vital now, with companies around the world examining environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in the wake of 2021’s COP26 summit in Glasgow. It’s quite possible to achieve both profit and environmental sustainability, but that requires deep thinking. A board must ask direct questions on a range of complex issues: climate change, ESG, corruption, cybersecurity, human trafficking, and supply-chain resilience. Helle Bank Jorgensen interviewed over 100 board members, experts, and executives for her new book, Stewards of the Future. Their wisdom – and practical pointers on how corporations can realistically be part of the solution – is shared in the book…and in this episode, as Helle gives host Maureen Metcalf an overview of her guide for a profitable and planet-friendly future.

And while they are required to step into unknown, high-pressure + high-stress work, we do not equip them with the same tools for resilience and recovery that we do for professional athletes and elite military units. Brian Ferguson joins the show to discuss how Arena Labs is focused on pioneering what they call "High Performance Medicine" in order to bring those same tools, training, and technology to frontline medical teams.

Many of those change leaders take lessons learned from organizations such as the Innovative Leadership Institute, merge them into their business models, and develop unique new ways of improvement and change.

Two of the Innovative Leadership Institute’s certified facilitators join us to discuss how they took the concepts they learned and applied them to their business functions. Graduates Tom Grote and Christoph Hinske join Maureen to discuss how they have extended the program content, and built a values-based systems mapping technique that helped shape both of their professional and personal journeys.

S7-Ep29: The New Role of Leadership in a Hybrid Workplace Dec 15, 2022

    Featured Guest: Greg Moran

The pandemic accelerated discussions and forecasts about the future of work. But there's a relative dearth of study about the future of leadership. This is a critical gap: as work changes, leadership must also change to ensure organizations can meet their objectives. After all, effective change always starts at the top. It is essential for leaders to "innovate how they lead" to keep pace, but what does that mean? Greg Moran joins host Maureen Metcalf to explore the changes leaders need to make, both in how they think about and how they perform the essential work of leadership.

Sean Castrina launched over twenty successful companies. He joins the show to discuss his story of overcoming a setback, how he moved beyond it to start multiple new businesses, and the leadership lessons he has learned from his experiences.

S7-Ep24: The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Companies Dec 15, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jeff Wald

The world has witnessed three-step functions in technological change: mechanization, electrification, and computerization. These industrial revolutions led to massive increases in productivity and thus we need far fewer workers. With each of these technological breakthroughs, the power balance between companies and workers shifted heavily to companies. The abuses of that power by companies instigated employee unrest. Counterbalancing forces rose to constrain companies’ power, eventually prompting unions, regulation, and the social safety net to bring stability to the relationship. As we enter the fourth great leap forward in technology with robots and AI, we face the first services revolution. The power balance will again shift massively to companies as new technologies drive productivity increases in the service industry, much as the last three industrial revolutions transformed manufacturing. Jeff Wald joins Maureen to discuss his book, The End of Jobs, and what the future of work is.

S7-Ep23: Recruiting and Retaining Diverse Executives Dec 15, 2022

    Featured Guest: Eric Douglas Keene

Diversity recruiting and retention is a hot topic in HR departments and the board room. Their DEI initiatives often fall short, though; many organizations don’t understand the nuances of recruiting, nor how to navigate the complexities of retention. Ensuring candidates and organizations create the best experiences and a path for mutual success isn't difficult. Eric Douglas Keene joins Maureen to discuss changes occurring in the world of diversity recruiting, with tips on helping your workforce benefit from the rich diversity of our citizenry.

S7-Ep22: The Creative Mindset: Mastering Skills that Empower Innovation Dec 15, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jeff DeGraff

Everyone can be creative in their own way. Creativity skills can be learned and developed. The creative process is iterative: we typically fail many times before we succeed. We learn from those failures and approach the next experiment with new information and an improved understanding. Yet it can be different in the workplace; particularly in large organizations, the innovative leader is often pushed down by stagnant thinking up the chain. Jeff DeGraff joins Maureen to share how you can tap your individual creativity…and how to deal with the realities of how true innovation is received in the workplace.

    Featured Guest: Liane Davey

Business today is more competitive than ever; staying ahead requires you to make tough calls, face hard choices, and work through conflict. But productive conflict is so rare. Why? Because productive conflict requires a different mindset, new skills, and repeatable processes -- none of which come naturally. Liane Davey joins Maureen to discuss building a productive conflict culture.

S7-Ep16: Mindfulness Benefits in the Workplace Dec 15, 2022

Featured Guests: Rich Fernandez and Peter Weng

Even before Covid-19, employees reported record rates of burnout and stress; Gallup studies show only 15% of employees are fully engaged at work. Organizations need well-being development for their employees. It is essential for today’s workplaces to provide well-being support, every bit as much as traditional professional development. Supporting the long-term mental health of your team can mean the difference between an engaged, collaborative and productive organization, or one riddled with toxicity and turnover. With 71% of U.S. office workers either curious about or already practicing meditation, now is the time to signal your long-term support for employees, and bring in the neuroscientifically proven benefits of contemplative practices, such as meditation. Peter Weng and Rich Fernandez discuss mindfulness and employee well-being with Maureen.

S7-Ep15: Empowering Women for the Prosperity of Nations Dec 15, 2022

Featured Guests: Amanda Ellis & Augusto Lopez-Claros

Gender inequality around the world has many facets: archaic laws that codify sexism, male control of joint income and household assets, exclusion from governance, trafficking and violence against women, denial of education and adequate health care, and gender segregation in the work force, to name a few. The Gender Equality and Governance Index (GEGI) taps into some of the world’s best datasets to analyze gender discrimination on a global scale, using five critical “pillars”: governance, education, work, entrepreneurship, and violence. The Index covers 158 countries and provides a compelling perspective on the status of gender inequality across the planet. It allows policymakers, the business community and civil society to pinpoint specific areas for improvement and to learn from best international practices. Amanda Ellis and Augusto Lopez-Claros join Maureen to discuss the index results for 2020 and how we as leaders can implement changes for the good of all.

Featured Guest: Dr. Mary Jo Burchard

As a society, we're facing a growing lack of trust. We're losing trust in each other, and in our institutions. The impacts ripple through our personal lives and through the nation -- reflected in how difficult it is for both parties to come together in Congress for the greater good. It's also led to an increase in mental illness and suicide. Dr. Mary Jo Burchard shares her personal experiences with this lack of trust to demonstrate how important building trust is in our lives: at home, at school, and at work.

S7-Ep12: Innovative Leadership for the Health Care Industry Dec 15, 2022

Neil Grunberg joins host Maureen Metcalf to share his experiences, and how the leadership framework he developed with Maureen can build the leadership skills needed by medical staff to make our healthcare system stronger. Neil has seen the gaps firsthand; he's a professor at the Uniformed Services University, training physicians, nurses, and psychologists for military and public health service.

S8-Ep51: Growing Up Biden: Family Lessons on Leadership Dec 13, 2022

    Featured Guest: Valerie Biden Owens

It’s said that leaders are made, not born. That’s certainly true of the Biden family. Although Joe Biden is in the spotlight as the 46th President of the United States, his three siblings are all leaders in their own right, too. And Joe’s sister Valerie Biden Owens says that forging of strong leadership began in childhood with deep family values.

Valerie joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss her book, Growing Up Biden. She shares the challenges she faced breaking gender barriers, the importance (and elusiveness) of confidence, and growing women as leaders. She'll also dive into the ingrained lessons and expectations that have been the guiding principles of the Biden’s close-knit, Irish American, Catholic family. These stories and insights speak deeply to the impact of family and generational leadership on political and personal ethos.

It's a revealing conversation unfolding the many ways our parents’ guidance shapes us as leaders of our own families, organizations…and nations.

S8-Ep49: Leading in Circles: The Inevitable Circular Economy Dec 06, 2022

    Featured Guest: Christoph Hinske

Can you survive in the new economy?

As the supply chain disruptions have shown, our current economic model is very linear. One kink in the chain can cascade through our whole system, nationally and globally. And our linear economy assumes unlimited resources to keep production going to start the chain. But unless we start mining asteroids soon, Earth has finite resources…and climate change is reducing even those (for example, where do we get wood as forests continue to die off?).

One solution is the circular economy, but its proponents are seeing it as an ideal. Christoph Hinske of Saxion University joins us to point out the “impossibilities” of the circular economy system, and the problems those can create. It’s a necessary process to strengthen the circular economy’s possibility while we face the inevitable transition to something new in the ways we conduct business.

Christoph is the co-editor of a new book, The Impossibilities of the Circular Economy: Separating Expectations from Reality, with experts from 12 different countries weighing in on why our current economic system will fail -- and what it will take for a circular economy to replace it.

    About Our Guest:

Mr. Christoph Hinske is an associate professor at the School of Finance and Accounting at SAXION University of Applied Sciences, covering Systems Leadership and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems. In his work, Christoph observed that our rapidly transforming economies force leaders to be systemic since they need to act in complex, ambiguous ecosystems. Consequently, his research focuses on empowering leaders to change their strategic and operational models from linear to circular to ecosystemic. He observed that 80 of organizations, intending to transform their models to be more systemic, continue doing the old stuff, using new fancy words. They still apply the same tools, mindsets, and frameworks developed to build linear success.

S8-Ep48: Art, Leadership...and the Art of Leadership Nov 29, 2022

Featured Guests: Ren Washington and Laura Gibson

Though we rarely think of it, there are strong connections between art and leadership. Art sets the environment and tone of the workplace; in your business or home office, it sets the tone of any conversation -- and sends a strong message of who you are, as a person and as a leader. The type of art around your team also shapes the kind of creativity and problem-solving they'll generate. The Center for Creative Leadership has used and studied art as a critical component of leadership development for decades; Ren Washington and Laura Gibson of the Center join us to explore the many ways art and leadership interconnect.

S8-Ep47: The Bonobo Sisterhood: Ape Society’s Lessons for Leadership - with Diane Rosenfeld Nov 22, 2022

    Featured Guest: Diane Rosenfeld

People like to think humanity is at the top of cultural achievement, the pinnacle of evolution’s craftwork. But one glance at the daily headlines proves we have problems. Lots of problems. Across all nations, there’s one glaring problem that hits hard over half our population: sexism. From subtle misogyny to outright violent abuse, women continue to be left on the outside of patriarchies…of a man’s world.

That’s not the case with bonobos. They’re our close evolutionary relatives: apes with whom we share 98.7% of our DNA. And their society is very equal. They share parenting duties and food amongst the entire group. And the females defend each other when needed, banding together like sisters regardless of status, age, or friendship. It’s the Bonobo Sisterhood, and guest Diane Rosenfeld tells us there’s a lot our political and corporate leaders can learn from these primates who show just how primitive people can be in comparison!

    Featured Guest: John Reid

    Adulthood is kryptonite.

We’re all born with superpowers. Curiosity is the most easily recognizable. As children, we’re flooded with it. But as adults, instead of being rewarded for having a million questions, we’re expected to have the answers. Leaders, in particular, believe they should have all the answers.

Your superpowers are still there, and truly great leaders know how to unlock them. John Reid will help you rediscover yours, too! Author of The Five Lost Superpowers, Reid joins host Maureen Metcalf to identify the powers we’re all born with…and to provide some basic tools to reactivate them so you can achieve your full potential, personally and as a leader. And when you do that, you’ll help the people around you achieve their potential, too!

S8-Ep46: Opportunity in Uncertainty - with Dr. Ciela Hartanov Nov 15, 2022

    Featured Guest: Dr. Ciela Hartanov

When you face uncertainty, how do you react?

We’re biologically wired to meet uncertainty with concern, even panic or anxiety: it triggers our fight-or-flight response. But behind that veil of the unknown lies tremendous opportunity, and we can rewire our brains to look forward to it…to welcome uncertainty as fun and exciting. As Dr. Ciela Hartanov explains to host Maureen Metcalf, the key is to hack our own mindset to create a new mental framework. In the process, we may just find ourselves in more humane workplaces.

S8-Ep30: Humbitious: How to Be Ambitious without the Ego - With Amer Kaissi Nov 02, 2022

    Featured Guest: Amer Kaissi

A major myth in politics and business is that arrogant, over-confident people are better leaders. But reality reveals the opposite: humility combined with ambition drives the best leadership performance – and that, in turn, improves the entire organization.

Author and Trinity University professor Amer Kaissi discusses the details with host Maureen Metcalf. His new book, Humbitious, digs deep into the reasons the humble-yet-ambitious leader delivers the best results…for everyone from front line staff to the board of directors. This isn’t academic theory; Kaissi studied real-world leaders from Napoleon Bonaparte to New Zealand’s acclaimed Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. While narcissists sometimes do make it to the top, they’re the exception, and their actual performance (as opposed to their PR) tends to be less than stellar.

Fortune favors not simply the bold, but the humbitious! ----------------------

S8-Ep44: Leading with Care in a Tough World Nov 01, 2022

Featured Guest: Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt

Only 15% of workers in the U.S. feel engaged with their jobs. That's just one job ill poor leadership spawns; bad leaders also cause turnover, absenteeism, and more. What is going wrong? Some leaders have the right beliefs and sentiments. Others may possess the right skills. Yet world-class leaders need BOTH the right beliefs and practices to address the current employee and organizational challenges. That ideal combination produces a leader who goes beyond servant leadership to truly caring leadership – and the results on employee engagement are profound. In their new book, Leading With Care in a Tough World: Beyond Servant Leadership, authors Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt detail the transformation to caring leadership – and the reasons it’s so deeply needed by so many organizations. They share those reasons in this episode.

S5-Ep18: Improve Virtual Team Success by Leveraging Paradox Oct 20, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jean Brittain Leslie

Organizations and the people working in them find themselves in environments that are increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA). Under these conditions, tensions that are ongoing, and seemingly overwhelming can be difficult to understand, much less easy to address. These tensions show up in all facets of organizational life including leadership (control vs. empowerment), teamwork (task vs. relationships), strategy (competition vs. collaboration), structure (centralize vs. decentralize), and in the individual (work vs. home). These conflicting demands, when pursued jointly, are often referred to as paradoxes. Reframing these tensions beyond either/or problems in need of a single solution enables us to produce an outcome that is superior to tackling one demand at a time. Jean explains how to work with paradox and apply these tools to improving virtual team success. She draws on the rich research she conducted to provide solutions.

S5-Ep17: Simplify Work: Crushing Complexity Oct 20, 2022

    Featured Guest: Jesse W. Newton

We are in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, yet have not realized the significant productivity gains that previous revolutions delivered. Author and Global Management Consultant Jesse Newton believes this to be in part because of the debilitating complexity that organizations have created over their existence. He’s spent years specializing in unburdening organizations from paralyzing complexity. Growing complexity has traditionally been met with added structures, processes, committees and systems. As a result, organizations often become a complicated mess, clouding strategic focus, slowing innovation and breeding complacency. In his new book, Simplify Work: Crushing Complexity to Liberate Innovation, Productivity, and Engagement, Newton delivers a newfound clarity on the case for simplification and the steps organizations and individuals need to take to unleash their potential.

This is a new type of management and requires new skills. Battelle is working to ensure their culture and their leaders are prepared with the soft skills and culture to thrive and maintain agility as they lead in integrating new technology into companies and the US government. David also shares his perspective on his career path and the importance of seeking mentoring and being a mentor.
