    French that speaks to you.

Salut, c’est Hugo! I created this podcast in 2017 when I was teaching at the French institute in Warsaw, Poland. My goal was to show my students that they could learn French naturally simply by listening to it. 30 million downloads later, I think we’re onto something!

Granted, it’s not a magic bullet. This method still requires hundreds of hours of practice. That’s why I’m doing my best to make these episodes as engaging as possible. I want you to get sucked into the topics so deep you forget that you’re “learning French”. You’ll quickly realize that you’re capable of understanding a lot more French than you think.

The episodes get progressively more challenging, so I’d recommend starting from the oldest ones and working your way up. From episode 92, I’m joined by Ingrid, a French journalist and teacher, for more conversational style episodes.

    Show notes

From CEOs to Athletes, it seems like everyone these days is waking up at 5 in the morning.

You probably already read some articles or books singing the praises of this new trend. But despite the many benefits it could bring to your life, every morning you’re late to jump on the bandwagon… You might even think that it’s just not for you.

But (almost) everyone can become an early bird. It is mostly a matter of method and patience. So in this podcast, I will share with you some tips to make it easier for you to adopt this healthy habit. And if you are definitely more of a night owl, I will give you some reasons not to feel guilty.

This podcast is designed for intermediate French learners who want to get a better grasp of the language by listening to interesting topics.

    E10 L’expérience de Milgram Jun 26, 2017
    Show notes

Very few psychological experiments became as famous and controversial as Milgram’s.

Stanley Milgram, born in a Jewish family in the Bronx, was deeply affected by the horrors of the Holocaust. After earning a Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University, he started a series of experiments to understand how so many Human Beings could commit such atrocities.

His terrifying results were an electroshock both for the public opinion and the scientific community. Although his methods were highly criticized, the Milgram experiment became an object of fascination and a source of inspiration for many books, movies, documentaries, etc.

Among those was a French-Swiss version of the experiment realized in 2010 that you can watch in this documentary:

    E09 La décroissance Jun 19, 2017
    Show notes

Economic growth has been our governments’ main concern for decades now. Capitalism needs it to survive and, by extension, we need it to keep living comfortably.

    Or so we believe.

Since the 70’s, a large number of economists, environmentalists and experts from various fields have warned us about the negative consequences of economic growth, not only on our planet but also on our personal lives.

“Degrowth” has appeared as an alternative in order to create a more sustainable model. But what does it mean exactly? Should we all sell our cars, our houses, and start living in the forest? Or are there some more approachable ways of reducing our negative impact and finding our on path?

This podcast is designed for intermediate French learners who want to get a better grasp of the language by listening to interesting topics.

E08 La vérité sur les Français Jun 12, 2017
    Show notes

Stereotypes are pretty convenient. Instead of losing time trying to understand the complexity of the world we live in, we can just take a commonly shared opinion and make it our own.

And when it comes to stereotypes about nationalities, the French people are an obvious target.

Whether it is about the weird animals they eat, how many cigarettes they smoke or their legendary rudeness, there is enough joke material for the rest of the world.

While there might be some truth here and there, a lot of those clichés are slightly outdated. It is time to set the records straight and let the frogs free.

Spoiler alert: I won’t be wearing a beret nor eating a baguette during this podcast.

E07 Les théories du complot Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

Did the Americans actually send men on the moon? Who exactly are the Illuminati and how can I become one?

Unfortunately you won’t get the answer to those questions here. And I won’t try to debunk those theories either. But we will talk about conspiracy theories and I will give you the recipe to make up a good one.

Conspiracy theories are a popular topic in France; we have a great deal of them. It is important to understand how they work and why they can be a threat for our democracies.

    E06 Les avantages cachés de l’apprentissage d’une langue May 29, 2017
    Show notes

We all know that we need to learn foreign languages (even French people do!). They are useful when we want to get good grades during our studies, and good positions during our career. We might even spend some holidays in a country where we can impress the locals with our fluency.

But in addition to those obvious advantages, learning a language has many other lesser-known benefits. Do you want to find out which ones?

Then this new episode is for you. And it might also give you some extra motivation to keep learning French!

E05 Le nouveau Président français May 22, 2017
    Show notes

French people elected their new President recently and their choice was a big surprise. Not only Emmanuel Macron was a complete stranger three years ago, but he is also the youngest President in the History of France.

Where does he come from? How did he manage to win the most important French election? What are his ideas and his program?

We will answer these questions –in French of course– in this new episode.

E04 La théorie du genre May 15, 2017
    Show notes

Why do we believe that men are better than women at math? Are boys biologically more violent than girls?

In this podcast, we will talk about gender studies and how they can help us to understand differences between sexes, not from a biological perspective but from a social one. Using examples from books, movies and psychological experiments, we will see how each of us builds his or her own sexual identity (gender) and how our education influences this process.

In this episode, your host Hugo will tell you everything there is to know about Emotional Robots - a new type of Robots that are able to understand our feelings and interact with us. It might sound like a sci-fi movie but those friendly machines are already present in some families and companies. Should we be worried about sharing our life with them? Is it really possible to understand emotions with algorythms? Those are the questions we will address in this podcast.
