Sometimes Love Says No: How to Set Boundaries With Love

Can you love someone deeply and still tell them no? Absolutely.

Being loving doesn't mean tolerating disrespect, over-giving, or letting people walk all over you. In this episode, we're talking about the difference between doormat energy and welcome mat energy—and how to set healthy boundaries without becoming cold, harsh, or controlling.

    You'll learn how to:

    • Set boundaries without guilt or shame
    • Love and accept someone while still saying no
    • Stop confusing unconditional love with unlimited access
    • Communicate your needs in relationships
    • Handle imbalances in relationship
    • Set loving boundaries with a teenager, partner, or anyone else in your life
    • Recognize when a relationship is no longer sustainable or compatible

You can love someone exactly as they are and still decide what you will and won't accept in your life.

If you're ready to stop being a doormat and start creating relationships where love and boundaries can coexist, this episode is for you.

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

What if your lovability has less to do with how much other people like you—and more to do with your ability to love?

In this episode, we’re reframing what lovability means and exploring how people pleasing, unmet expectations, and our invisible “manuals” for other people can make it harder to experience genuine connection.

    You’ll learn how to:

    • Recognize the expectations that may be creating resentment and distance rather than love and connection
    • How to let go of trying to control others
    • The importance of practicing curiosity instead of emotional reactivity
    • How to love people without tolerating mistreatment or abandoning your own boundaries
    • How to increase your “love ability” while staying true to yourself

If you’re a recovering people pleaser who wants healthier relationships, less resentment, and more peace, this episode will give you a new way to think about love, expectations, and connection.

Emotional Adulthood: Stop Giving Other People the Remote Control to Your Emotions

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “They made me feel this way”? In this episode, we’re talking about emotional adulthood, emotional responsibility, and taking ownership of your emotional experience—without pretending other people’s behavior doesn't affect you.

Through three relatable examples involving a partner, a friend, and an adult child, you’ll learn how your thoughts influence your emotional responses and how waiting for other people to change can put your own peace and happiness on hold.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • What emotional adulthood really means
    • Why saying “you made me feel this way” can leave you feeling powerless
    • How to take responsibility for your emotional responses
    • How to respond differently when someone disappoints or frustrates you
    • How to have boundaries and concerns without giving away your emotional power

A question to take with you:
The next time you think, “They made me feel this way,” pause and ask: “What am I making their behavior mean?”

How to Find a Relationship Match

Have you ever found yourself wishing someone would want the same things you do? In this episode, we’re talking about “want matches” in relationships—what happens when two people want different things and why that doesn’t have to mean something is wrong with either person.

Using the simple analogy of the card game Go Fish, MaryAnn explores how getting clear about your wants can help you find the right people to meet those needs instead of trying to convince someone to become the person you wish they were.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • What a “want match” is and why it matters
    • How to identify what you actually want in your relationships
    • Why someone not wanting the same thing doesn’t mean you aren’t valuable
    • How trying to change someone can create resentment and conflict
    • Why healthy relationships don’t require one person to meet every need
    • How to find people who naturally share your interests, values, and desires

    Your challenge this week:
Get clear about one thing you want in a relationship. Then ask yourself: Who already wants this too? Instead of trying to change someone, look for your match.

Who Belongs in Your Inner Circle? How to Know Where People Fit in Your Life
Who actually belongs in your inner circle? For many people, especially recovering people pleasers, it’s easy to focus on whether someone likes you instead of asking a much more important question: Do I actually like them? Do the align with the life I want to create?
When we’re more focused on being liked, we can end up giving people more access, trust, time, and emotional energy than they’ve actually earned. We may also hold onto relationships because we want them to become something they aren’t—or expect someone to meet a standard they’re unwilling or unable to meet.
In this episode of Inner Work with MaryAnn Walker, we’re talking about relationship circles and how understanding where people belong in our lives can help reduce resentment, frustration, and disappointment in relationships.

Because healthy relationships aren’t about getting everyone to like you.
They’re about learning to recognize who is a good fit for you—and giving each relationship the right amount of access, intimacy, and expectation.

How to Challenge Limiting Beliefs and Change Your Life

What if some of the things you believe about yourself aren't actually facts?

Maybe you've told yourself, "I'm not a runner," "I'm not good at public speaking," "I'm not musical," or "I'm too old to start something new."

But what if you simply haven't collected enough evidence yet?

In this episode, MaryAnn invites you to reopen the case study on the beliefs you've formed about yourself. Instead of assuming that a difficult first experience means you can't do something, you can get curious, try again, and look for new evidence.

Your brain looks for evidence to support what you already believe. When you change the thought, you can begin creating new possibilities.

    In This Episode, You'll Learn:

    • How limiting beliefs can keep you stuck.
    • Why a difficult first experience doesn't mean you're incapable.
    • How your brain looks for evidence to support your beliefs.
    • Why practice and repetition can change what you believe you're capable of.
    • How to replace "I can't" with a more supportive thought.
    • Why it's never too late to challenge an old belief.
    • How to reopen the case study and look for evidence of a different outcome.

    Your Challenge This Week

Choose one belief that may be holding you back.

    Ask yourself:

"What if this isn't actually true?"

Then look for evidence that there could be a different ending to your story.

You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to keep testing the hypothesis.

And remember: It's not too late to create change.

How to Set Boundaries Without Feeling Rude or Guilty

If you're a highly sensitive person, empath, or recovering people-pleaser who struggles to say no, this episode is for you.

Maybe you worry about hurting someone's feelings. Maybe you're afraid of coming across as rude, selfish, unhelpful, or mean. Or maybe you've gotten into the habit of saying yes when you really want to say no—and then feeling overwhelmed, resentful, or exhausted afterward.

In this episode of Inner Work with MaryAnn Walker, we're talking about how to set healthy boundaries while still honoring your kind and compassionate heart.

MaryAnn introduces a simple boundary-setting technique called the Boundary Sandwich, a practical formula that helps you communicate a clear no without unnecessary guilt, conflict, or over-explaining.

You'll learn how to acknowledge someone's good intent, clearly state your boundary, and—when appropriate—end with another kind or supportive statement.

Most importantly, you'll learn why over-explaining can unintentionally turn your boundary into a negotiation.

    What You'll Learn

    • Why highly sensitive people and people-pleasers often struggle with saying no.
    • How tying your worth to what you can do for others can make boundary setting difficult.
    • What the Boundary Sandwich is and how to use it.
    • The difference between a closed-faced boundary sandwich and an open-faced boundary sandwich.
    • Why assuming good intent can help you communicate boundaries with compassion.
    • Why your boundary should be kind, clear, and concise.
    • How over-explaining can make your "no" unclear and unintentionally invite negotiation.
    • Why clear is kind and unclear is unkind when it comes to communication.
    • How to set boundaries with family members, coworkers, friends, neighbors, and your boss.
    • How to communicate boundaries around your time, energy, availability, parenting choices, work hours, and emotional labor.

    The Boundary Sandwich

    The basic formula is simple:

Say something kind → State your boundary → Say something kind.

    For example:

"I appreciate you thinking of me, and I'm not available this weekend. I hope you find someone who can help."

The goal isn't to make your boundary more palatable so someone will approve of it.

The goal is to communicate your boundary clearly and compassionately without abandoning yourself.

    Remember:

    Kind. Clear. Concise.

You don't have to convince someone that your boundary is reasonable before you're allowed to have it.

    Work With MaryAnn

If you're ready to stop abandoning yourself in an effort to keep everyone else comfortable, The Self-Reclamation Projectmay be the next step for you.

This 12-week private coaching experience gives you the opportunity to take the tools you've been learning on the podcast and apply them directly to your own life, relationships, thought patterns, boundaries, and personal circumstances.

224: Who's Influencing You? The 5 People Secretly Controlling Your Life Aug 06, 2026
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Who has the greatest influence on your life?

Most people have heard the saying, "You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with." But what if that's not entirely true?

In this episode of Inner Work with MaryAnn Walker, we're exploring a different perspective:

You become the sum of the five people you think about the most.

Whether it's a supportive friend, an ex you can't stop thinking about, a coworker, a family member, or even someone you've never met before, the people occupying your thoughts are shaping your emotions, nervous system, and ultimately your life.

If you've been stuck in rumination, replaying conversations, or allowing one difficult relationship to steal your peace, this episode will help you become more intentional about where your attention goes—and why that changes everything.

    In This Episode You'll Learn:

    • Why your thoughts reveal who truly has influence over your life.
    • How rumination keeps negative relationships emotionally alive.
    • The connection between your focus, your nervous system, and your emotional well-being.
    • Why your brain naturally gives more attention to negative experiences.
    • How to intentionally choose healthier influences.
    • Simple ways to shift your focus toward people and experiences that support your growth.
    • Why protecting your mental and emotional energy is one of the greatest forms of self-care.

    Your Challenge This Week

Take a few minutes to ask yourself:

Who are the five people taking up the most mental and emotional space in my mind?

    Then ask yourself:

    • Are these the people I want influencing my life?
    • How do I feel after thinking about them?
    • Who would I rather invite into my mental space?

Choose just one positive influence to intentionally spend time with this week—a trusted friend, mentor, coach, author, podcaster, musician, or someone whose presence leaves you feeling more hopeful, grounded, and empowered.

    Ready to Reclaim Your Peace?

If you're tired of overthinking, people-pleasing, or allowing difficult relationships to consume your mental energy, I'd love to support you.

Bloom Scrolling: How to Rewire Your Brain for More Joy Instead of Doom Scrolling

Have you ever picked up your phone for "just a minute" only to realize an hour has disappeared—and somehow you feel more anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained than when you started?

    That's doom scrolling.

In this episode of Inner Work with MaryAnn Walker, we're exploring its powerful opposite: bloom scrolling.

Bloom scrolling is the intentional practice of curating your social media feed—and your daily life—to cultivate more joy, inspiration, hope, and peace. Instead of letting the algorithm decide what influences your thoughts, emotions, and nervous system, you'll learn how to intentionally train your brain to seek out the good.

Research shows that what we repeatedly focus on strengthens the neural pathways associated with those thoughts and emotions. By intentionally consuming uplifting content, you can begin reinforcing more positive thought patterns, activate your parasympathetic "rest and digest" response, and create an environment where joy becomes easier to experience.

In this episode, I share practical ways to transform your social media experience, simple daily habits that take less than five minutes, and the surprising ways your feed can influence your mood, energy, and overall outlook on life.

    In This Episode You'll Learn:

    • The difference between doom scrolling and bloom scrolling
    • Why we doom scroll when we're anxious, overwhelmed, or procrastinating
    • How social media affects your nervous system and emotional well-being
    • Why intentionally curating your feed can improve your mood
    • How your brain develops stronger neural pathways based on repeated experiences
    • Simple ways to teach the algorithm what you actually want to see
    • Why five intentional minutes each day can change how you experience life
    • How to cultivate more joy both online and offline

    This Week's Challenge

    Today, intentionally reshape your algorithm.

When you find something that genuinely inspires you:

    • Like it.
    • Comment on it.
    • Follow the creator.
    • Save or share the post.

When something consistently drains your energy:

    • Select "Not Interested."
    • Unfollow or mute accounts that no longer serve you.

Then spend just five intentional minutes doing something that brings you joy—whether that's stretching, dancing, sitting in the sunshine, playing with your dog, reading something inspiring, or simply taking a deep breath.

Small, intentional choices repeated consistently create lasting change.

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your circumstances—but the story you've been telling yourself about who you are?

In this deeply personal episode, I share the surprising email I received from Good Morning America and how one unexpected opportunity completely shifted the way I saw myself. Even though the interview didn't happen, the experience revealed something far more valuable: the identities we unconsciously create often determine what's possible in our lives.

If you've ever caught yourself saying things like:

    • "I'm just not confident."
    • "I'm not a morning person."
    • "I'm unlucky in love."
    • "I never follow through."
    • "I don't even know who I am anymore."

    ...this episode is for you.

We'll explore how these identity statements are simply practiced thoughts—not permanent truths—and how changing them can completely transform the way you show up in your life.

I also introduce The Self Reclamation Project, a 12 weeks one-on-one coaching experience designed specifically for women who are ready to reclaim their time, energy, joy, and self identity.

    In This Episode You'll Learn:

    • Why your identity isn't fixed—and how you've been unknowingly creating it
    • The surprising mindset lesson I learned from Good Morning America
    • How your brain gathers evidence to support the stories you believe
    • The difference between self-awareness and true transformation
    • Why personal growth requires integration, not just information
    • How coaching helps you uncover blind spots and move through overwhelm faster
    • The four pillars of The Self Reclamation Project:
      • Reflect
      • Reclaim
      • Reframe
      • Reimagine
    • How changing just one belief can open doors you never imagined were possible

The Self Reclamation Project is a 12-week, one-on-one coaching experience designed to help you reclaim your voice, confidence, peace, identity, and joy.

Together we'll identify what's keeping you stuck, rewrite limiting beliefs, and build a life that actually feels like yours.
